Bed bugs in our room. Hole in ceiling allows mosquitoes to enter. Bathroom tub not clean, mini fridge in room not restocked for the entire week. Food buffet was below average compared to other resorts in Cuba.

We really enjoyed our stay at Melia Las Antilles. The food was okay. The ala cartes were really good. The beach is beautiful except needs some cleaning. There are cigarette butts everywhere in the sand. The rooms need updating, especially the bathrooms.We had an ant problem in our room. But everything is open to air so bugs would be hard to control. Beautiful beach and grounds. Staff is very helpful if you have questions and very friendly even if you don't. Staff at the buffet and a la cartes are awesome and deserve much of the credit for the atmosphere of this resort. Always happy and humming and smiling. The beach is amazing and a perfect way to spend the day. The entertainers do a different routine every night and do it professionally and with a ton of talent. the resort was good , near the beautiful beach , 10 min walk to the main road for the bus to the shopping areas. The only thing was our room was not cleaned properly, she never wiped the bathroom counter ( I used the same towel to clean it) towels were not changed or the bedding for the week. [Details]

Mother daughter trip to Cuba

All in all our stay was amazing as the staff was very nice. If you are going to Cuba for the food then you will be disappointed because your expectations will be to high. The food is bland but they do have a variety of it and there will always be something you will enjoy (try not to be to picky). Our room was big and clean (not new) and had no drawers to put your cloths in. The shows were very nice since you could just sit have a drink and listen to the singers every night. The access to go to Varadero was very easy and safe. The facilities at the gym are poor but you can manage to get a workout anyways. One thing I would recommend while going in Nov. would be to take mosquito repellent since at night in the lobby there were lots of mosquitos (not sure if time of year since was at another resort in June and did not have that problem). The best part of a resort for me is the beach and the water was warm, clear and amazing. All staff were caring and welcoming. Room was clean, plenty of hot water in the shower. Easy to access bus to Varadero. Very safe place to go.
The weak points
No drawers in room to put your cloth in (just closet). Food lacks a bit of taste. Not impressed with excursion to Havana as the guide was not that good, food at the restaurant was not enough for 8 people, lots of time spent on bus.

There was only 1 person doing checkins, so we stood in line for awhile. We were greeted and given half a smile, given our room keys, safe key and towel card and map and pretty much left to find our room on our own. The concierge came over and took our luggage, he's the one who told us how to find our rooms. The exchange on our currency was very expensive, as the charge 11%. Upon finding our room, the bungalows are old and dated. The resort maps around the property are in stone and are old and cracked- very hard to read. The entertainment information is posted on 1 wall and if someone doesn't point it out- you have NO idea on times or places! The resort was ‘out' of a lot of things- no mint for mojitos, no calamari etc. The ladies washroom in the lobby was closed most of the time, so we were limited to the one by the buffet on the ground level, not a huge problem just very inconvenient. The ‘store' is nice, however they carry very few essentials that you may have forgotten or are in need of. A la carte reservations are made by 1 person, so you will find yourself lining up for anywhere from 5-30 mins to make reservations.
There never seemed to be enough servers in any of the bars, as you could wait up to 15-20 mins for a refill. There were no servers around the pool or at the beach bar. The sulfur smell the lagoon creates is rather unpleasant during the hotter days. Most guests we talked to were all in agreement, we all paid way too much to stay at this resort. I suggest you do your research, there are nicer, cheaper and better equipped resorts than this one. The beach is beautiful, however people use it as their own personal ashtray - and garbage can, if you take a drink from the beach bar , the garbage cans are located back by the pathway so many just left the plastic cups behind. This was my second vacation to Cuba, if this had been my first visit- I would be very discouraged over the amount I paid vs the quality and rating of this resort. [Details]

The majority of staff at this resort were very nice & great to interact with!!! The buffet was ok, what you expect to find in Cuba. A la carte restaurants were good.
The weak points
Pool(s) are small and set up a bit odd. You have to walk around the pool to get to the outside theatre to watch the nightly entertainment. Nightly shows were all basically the same - only difference seemed to be costume changes.

Great Vacation Great Weather

This was our first trip to Cuba and we really enjoyed the experience.
It was very HOT this time of year which we loved.
The hotel staff were friendly and accommodating. The nightly entertainment was terrific, especially the synchronized swimming.
The beach was fantastic from the beautiful sand / water to the cleanliness and music plus the bar / BBQ were only steps away.
There were fish and sharks outside the buffet area (non pool or beach).
There were many daily activities to take part in with lots of musical entertainers.
Our day trip tour to Havana was exceptional and our 1/2 day trip to Varadero in a PINK convertible Cadillac was great fun. The locals were all very friendly.
The room was clean (thanks to Mitchi), the bed was comfortable but the bathroom was in need of a reno. We had plenty of HOT water and the fridge was well stocked. The patio door wouldn't lock properly.
We were warned about the food in Cuba not being good BUT we enjoyed it all. The buffet had a wide variety of food to choose from and the outside BBQ was terrific. The food did have taste contrary to what we had heard. The a la carte restaurants were disappointing.
Big PLUS was that we were only 30 minutes from the airport therefore we were on the beach by 10:30 am (first day was a full day to enjoy the resort).
No doctor or health clinic on site if you need medical assistance the front desk would call the ambulance.
Be careful with the mosquitos / flies - bring bug repellant. [Details]

Only a 3.5 hour flight from Toronto and resort only 30 minutes from the airport. Beach and people were AWESOME! We felt very welcomed and will definitely return again.
The weak points
Hotel was dated and needs a reno in certain areas.(like most hotels in Cuba) For safety reasons, the walkways needed more light at night. (replace light bulbs)

The pool and the beach were great, no seaweed, you can walk out in the ocean for a hundred feet and still be chest deep on a sandy bottom. The pool was large and clean with gentle walk outs, plenty of room for everyone.
The weak points
As with most poor countries the food is not great but you navigate it, the a la carte restaurants are an option as is the poolside "snack bar" but Cuba is not the place for those that want North American quality food service.

Wonderful Vacation

Check in went fine. Our first room didn't have a great view - we overlooked the restaurant building - however we purchased a super saver room. The room itself was clean and a nice size. Our air conditioning wasn't working right so on our second day we changed rooms and were given the choice of staying in the main building or move to one of the bungalow buildings. We chose the bungalow building.

Our first experience at the buffet was good. We did not make it the first night until 9:30 - the buffet closes at 10:00 so as this is Cuba I was not expecting much. The food choices were so much and varied and they were still putting out food - I was so pleasantly surprised. This hotel had the best food I have come across in five trips to Cuba.

We did a lot of activities with the Activity Staff - games around the pool - wonderful staff - so friendly.

Overall hotel staff were very friendly and helpful except a couple that weren't.

The pool was clean, grounds well looked after and always being looked after.

I would return in a heartbeat and plan on returning one day. [Details]

The beach! The beach at this hotel is one of the best I have ever seen and I am a frequent traveller. You can walk out at least half a block into the crystal clear ocean and the water is still below shoulder height - and you can still see your toes!

Beaches are still great. The main hotel is clean and most of the staff are pleasant. Rooms were good, but the bed we had was a rock. We went to our friend's room and they had an amazing mattress, so not all mattresses have been replaced. Food was below average from North America standards. BBQ outside the buffet was good. The Best Resort

We have been to this resort 7 times, we absolutely love it. The staff at Melia Las Antillas are some of the best people ever! They are so friendly and always make sure you have the best stay. The rooms are very spacious and beds are comfortable. There is a good selection of food, and no matter what time of day or night you can find something to eat. Coffee and cocktails are 24/7 and always delicious. Day time and night time entertainment every day. And the pool and beach are amazing! I can't say enough good things about this resort. We upgraded to an ocean view concierge room and the extra customer service and amenities were well worth it! Our room was clean and comfortable. The grounds and pool area were well maintained and there were plenty of lounge chairs at the beach. Concierge, front desk, bar and a la carte staff were excellent. Difficult to get service at the buffet. Buffet offered many fresh prepared by order options. All entertainment was out doors which wasn't conducive to inclement weather when you were looking for something to do. [Details]

The strong points
Excellent concierge, front desk, bar and a la carte staff. Cuban Day lunch Grounds and pool area were well maintained and there were plenty of lounge chairs at the beach.
The weak points
Poor service at the buffet. No hot water in the early morning one day. A la carte meal portions were quite small. Out door evening entertainment - no protection from wind or rain.

The grounds are nice and staff. Food is repetitive, snack bar has basic food, drinks are very basic, you can't get anything blended and shots are not good. The room itself was alright the first one smelt like smoke the second one was better but the tub was permanently dirty. Bed was comfortable. When you call the front desk don't except anything to come right away we waited hours and usually had to call back. Our cleaner for the room was amazing, and when the toilet broke and tv remote she called people to fix it. [Details]

Location, beach, and it wasn't busy so you didn't have to get up early to get a lounge chair.

Food and drinks. It's adult only but it's not a party resort which is what we wanted, disco was always empty and no DJ.

Varadero Cuba, Melia Las Antillas resort

My experience at Las Antilla's resort was all negative. It was a very old hotel, more like a motel or much worse. The night when we first arrived, a huge cockroach of the size of a pancake was there to welcome us. We had change room the first day because there was nowhere to put our clothes. The next room there was a small broken down drawer which was better than nothing, but there was water licking from the ceiling pipes. Worms crawling everywhere in the room. The entertainment was not the best, but disorganized, so was the service in the room and out of it. Every day they would forget to bring fresh towels and we had to call the front desk in order to bring them...The last day of our disastrous vocation, our plain was living at 10:15 pm, but we had to live from the resort at 6:15, so we thought we could stay a bit more to the swimming pool before checking out. After that, we went to the room to get ready to live, but they locked us out of the room saying that we suppose to checking out at 12pm (ok maybe they were right but they could call us to remind) and they asked us to pay 16 pesos more for the extra hour which we did. The only good thing was the beach. Good luck if you are thinking of going to this place. I do not suggest. [Details]

If you have reasonable expectations, you will love it. Cuban standards of luxury are different. I would say a five star resort in Cuba looks and feels like a three star resort in Mexico. Everything looks a bit dated and beat up. It did not bother us as we do not travel that far to spend days in our room admiring the paint job and tiles. The resort grounds are beautiful, the room was comfortable and clean, the beach is one of the best I have seen, the food was great. The music on the main patio can be too loud at times. It is located in the very center of the resort, so you can't escape it. [Details]

The best part by far is the adult only feature. No screaming brats running around, so you can realy relax and enjoy some peace. I don't understand why non- adult only resorts even exist. Ttravellers with kids are a minority that ruins it for everyone.
The weak points
Too many smokers. The tourists come to Cuba from all over the world. Most Europeans and South Americans smoke, some even inside the lobby area and in bars. It is not the resort's fault though and I have seen it in other similar resorts in 4 countries.

Cuba is not for vegetarians

The hotel itself is very old - build in 1999 and hit by several hurricanes since. The roof leaks when it rains and they place buckets everywhere. A lot of the shared areas don't AC. The pond on the property has a strong foul odour but it has fish and sharks in it - which is kind of cool! We noticed black mold, a lot of chipped paint, stains, etc. Our bathtub also had some permanent black stains. But, our maid tried her best to make it look nice.

As a vegetarian, I would not recommend Cuba. The food is not labeled. You just have to guess what's in front of you. There's also a lot of cross contamination. Their definition of vegetarian includes seafood. There was bugs in the food and drinks. I am not a picky eater (aside from my vegetarianism), but if you are a strict vegan or vegetarian, you will starve!

It's definitely not a party spot but more for adults. It was nice to go to an adult only resort as there were no kids running around or screaming.

On the plus side, beautiful beach. It was very well maintained. A couple of beggars approached us on the beach and in the actual ocean but the staff was pretty on top of them! They also offer free water sports (ie kayak, wind sailing & paddle boats). [Details]

This is our favorite place to be! Melia Las Antillas is a beautiful resort, with amazing staff and incredible selection of food and beverages! The hotel is always kept very clean and the grounds beautiful...every year we go, there is always something new and they are always making improvements. The rooms are very spacious and have big comfortable king beds. The maids always do a fantastic job to keep your room clean and tidy. The food selection is great, from the huge selection at the buffet and outside grill, to the a la carte restaurants and the delicious pool bar restaurant and burgers at the beach, there is something for everyone 24 hours a day. And the staff, I can't say enough great things about the staff, they are the reason we keep going back year after year! They are so friendly and always make sure to make your stay as amazing as possible!! They make you feel at home!!! Melia Las Antillas is definitely a recommended place to stay!! [Details]

Once again amazing vacation

The resort is close to the airport about 45 minute. When you get to the resort you will be received with a nice cold drink and also have a very good service at the reception. The room are nice and comfortable. The fridge is refilled every day with beers and liquor.
The maids are doing a very good job when cleaning your room. Betsy is just a pearl.
If you take the concierge service we will be received with Maylin and Elizabeth. They will what is possible for you.

The lobby bar and the terrace where they served good drink. Claudia, Ramon, Yamilcar, Raine make very good drink and you can see that they like their job.
Their is at night a mojito bar with Roberto, the king of mojito.

The buffet you will always find something good. Their also a BBQ outside where you can have your meat cook right there. Now Toma, Loisek, Jomerky, Maribel, Ayleem and all the others will give you a very good service.

At lunch go have a good pizza outside. Inelsy will serve you with her very nice smile.

On your way to the pool we will pass by a smoothie bar. Andy makes the best one.

Now the snack. I like going there for lunch. Orlando, Raul, Juan... will give you very good service.

The bar with Jorge, Lachy, Tatiana, Myleidys.... will serve also serve you good drink.

The Romantico is very nice you have to go for dinner. Also the Don Pepperone where Pedro and Martha works. They are very funny and nice.

El Conuco is located by the pool. It is very nice to have dinner outside.

Don't miss the show on Tuesday night. It is in the pool. It is fantastic.

There are al kind of activities by the pool all day long. With Teresa and her team.

By the beach bar there is a BBQ where Norberto will cook you the best hamburger.

The best is gorgeous. You can take long walk from one way to the other.

I always have new friends when I keep returning. Alicia, Jelylin, Loisek, Jomerky.

A big thank you to all the MLA'S team for your nice work. That is the reason why I keep going back and planning my next trip

You will see a men called Jorge Klem, he will make sure that your vacation at perfect.

To finish a special thank you to M. Raul, you always make our vacation just amazing. I have no word for it.

This resort was a good fit for us and our first trip to Cuba. It was clean and inviting. Staff were friendly and hard working. Some of the food was not to our taste but we always had something we could eat. VIP lounge was worth the extra $$. Cleaning staff were diligent and kept things looking good. Wide variety of food choices. Felt safe everywhere we went. Enjoyed the bus to Varadero.

Lagoon was smelly by times. Only one elevator working. Meat could have been cooked a bit longer by times.
