We just had a wonderful week at Melia Las Antillas. We usually spend most of out time at the beach and it and the pool were all we could ask for. They were clean and there was never a shortage of chairs or service at either location.
Service in general at this location, housekeeping, food and bartending, were all very good. The beach bar staff, Colon, Raul and Jorge made us smile everyday. We were also especially pleased with Greter, Ibeisi and Naidelys in Fifth Floor Concierge who went out of their way to make us comfortable. Naidelys was especially helpful on one occasion when my husband, who is a type one diabetic, found himself with a low blood sugar early in the morning. We always travel with the required candy etc. but weren't sure we would have enough to get us to breakfast and she delivered juice and sweets to our room.
Our room was very comfortable and kept very clean by housekeeping. The bed was the most comfortable we've had in all of our visits to Cuba and for the first time ever, I didn't use the extra pillowcases I brought from home as the pillows smelled fresh and clean as opposed to musty and damp.
As is the case at most resorts in Cuba right now, there were some inconsistencies with what was available for food and drinks. On one night no white wine in the buffet, another no pina colada at the pool or gin in the lobby. These situations were usually temporary and we were always able to find something else to our liking to eat and drink.
We are both 50 years old and found this resort to have the perfect mix of entertainment/activities and quiet. We were especially impressed with the Cuban Day entertainment and food and the evening cocktail party for Canadians. They both felt like nice little extras and were well done. We recommend this resort and will definitely hope to be lucky enough to return. [Details]

The location is good and the staff is very friendly and accommodative. They try their level best to keep the guests happy and entertained. Very good choice of drinks from all bars and restaurants. Rooms look dated and not well maintained. The choice of food is limited and no flavors. Overall good stay for drinks and relaxation [Details]

I stayed 6 nights in this hotel and I don't regret it at all, I was able to rest and party. I tried the delicacies of the Cuban day which is not usually the most sophisticated cuisine but it is very tasty. The staff is a dream, they are all smiling and friendly at all times. I recommend paying for a room on the 4th or 5th floor and concierge service because it is a plus that really enhances your stay at this hotel. I loved it all. [Details]

It is a beautiful and very natural hotel. I really liked the gardens and the lagoon. Although the food was not the most selective in the world, it was very good and there were options to eat whatever you wanted. The staff is spectacular, they are all looking out for you the whole day, so if you have any discomfort they do what. [Details]

LOVED my first trip to Cuba
Heather, Woodstock, ON
2023-01-29
I stayed for my first time in Cuba and had absolutely no idea what to believe about many of the reviews and warnings I'd read going in. Although it is certainly a change from what I'm used to in Canada this resort was absolutely amazing considering. It was very clean and the food was plentiful. It was at times a bit repetitive with some foods but there was so much to choose from and many different places within the resort to get something different. The people working there are SO amazingly kind and friendly and appreciative of us being there. I really did not expect that. The beach and pool were amazing and drinks were abundant! I would definitely recommend going here to Melia Antillas. [Details]

The strong points
It is very beautiful and clean with wonderful staff, good plentiful food in different locations. Lots of fantastic entertainment and a great location not far from Veradero and only about a half hour from the airport. The grounds are also very beautiful.
The weak points
The hotel looks like it needs work done such as painting and just needs some revitalization but all in all that has nothing to do with the function of the hotel or your comfort and I really didn't notice it as much after the first day.
Sanitary measures (Covid-19)
There is plenty of hand sanitizer to be found in the resort. It is very clean there. But it is a public hotel on an island where all go from around the world so..... you take your chances anywhere.

Our 10 days at Melia Las Antillas
Dieter Nowakowski, Grenville Sur La Rouge, QC
2023-01-15
We gathered with family from 3 separate provinces in Canada, Quebec, Alberta and Manitoba. We had great expectations as all the reviews were very positive. I will not be as positive. Rooms: Our room was very musty smelling and I know why, no ventilation of any kind in the bathroom area. Not because they weren't working, there was no evidence of a fan ever being there! The mosquitos were brutal and I had visions of breaking my mirror at the sink because that's the only way I could kill them. The Food: I know Cuba is not known for their tasty food but we had a real problem getting the basics. Butter was only available in the am and sometimes not even then. No bananas or orange juice ever!!! Bacon was rare and so were fruits in general. No fries ever, only rice and spaghetti. They ran out of white wine on our third day, never to see it again! The Pina Colada and Mohitos were making very rare appearances. When they did have vodka, there no mix to make anything. They had rum and mixed it with sickly sweet punch or lemonade. No coke, 7up or the likes and certainly, no gingerale. Another problem was the glasses. They were serving beer in champagne flutes in the evening which embarrassed the staff considerably. I really felt sorry for them having to tell the guests they couldn't make a pina colada because they didn't have the ingredients or having to serve a grouchy guest a beer in a champagne flute! The chicken I relied on the last time I went to Cuba was scarce as well. The Snack Bar had not much to offer either. I had omelet every day and that was my main meal of the day. I believe his hotel is rated a 4 1/2 star but there was no indication of this that 1 saw anywhere at the resort. I booked because it was a 4 1/2 star. I do not remotely think it was a 4 1/2 star. The Grounds: The river on the grounds was very smelly. They had daily issues with the pumps which created loads of moss they had to rake to the sides. I loved all the palm trees they had on the resort and I know this hotel must have been grand in earlier days but it is evident that the good times are behind this little gem. The rain troughs on the roof of the buildings are no longer there and the once beautiful are resort is becoming run down. [Details]

NICE RESORT
Dancer, Parksville, BC

Melia Las Antillas resort was great for the price we paid. Rooms and all surrounding areas were kept clean. Needs some TLC and attention to detail such as paint on the outside walls and corridors and broken hand rails. The staff was fantastic and the location to the beach wonderful. Entertainment was good for the first few days then it became repetitious. The menus in the specialty restaurants did not change for the 2 weeks we were there but that's Cuba for you. Still managed to gain 4 lbs. [Details]

Wonderful stay, returning in October
Lynn, Calgary, AB
2022-09-29
Buffet and food were wonderful. Service at the bar was a bit slow, but not because of employees being slow. Miguel always saw me coming and had a drink waiting for me. Danita was also so helpful. I found the food to be quite good. I am a fussy eater, yet there was always yummy food - especially the pork stew - so flavorful! I have been to 4 other resorts in Varadero, and this food was so much better.
Sprained my ankle early in the trip, so I wasn't able to enjoy much of the vacation. The shows seemed good compared to other places in Varadero that I have been to. I did not go to any of the a la cartes, but will this trip. I had bedbugs, but by the time that I realized, it was the second to last day - I thought that the bites were ants or sand bugs. I am taking this trip to the same resort as I missed out on a lot of things because of my ankle. I am very excited to participate in the special nights, especially Cuba night (I couldn't hobble to the beach).
I am also so impressed with the lagoon, who cares about the smell, which really wasn't too bad at all. It is a natural environment that is very lacking in the world. From what I have seen, Cuba is very involved in wildlife conservation, so if there is a bit of a smell to live with in supporting local wildlife, no person should complain about it. The facilities are not as run down as other reviews would make you think. the bathroom was clean, as well as the room (other than the bedbugs!). I don't go for a Caribbean holiday for a fancy room. My room was very quiet, even being close to the pool.
If you want top of the line, fancy places, I suggest that you pay the price for them. There are at least 4 others that have upper class snobby service for the elite few; the people that I am quite happy to avoid.
I would certainly give this resort 4 stars. So looking forward to seeing Miguel again! [Details]

I wanted to take the time to express our extreme satisfaction with this hotel! This was our third visit and we went knowing that things could be scarce! The hotel was extremely clean and the staff amazing! The ocean was beautiful. We had good food and lots of choices. The food and beverages manager Miguel Lopez was on top of everything. Guest Services were always checking in, Thank You so much! Entertainment was top notch! Only thing to improve would be the mosquitoes. However we were lucky and kept away from them. Staying inside early mornings and no nighttime beach. Thank you all for making this an amazing stay! [Details]

This was my first time to Cuba so not sure what to expect. Was honestly the worst resort I have ever been too. I know Covid has hit Cuba so hard, so I was happy to be there and to tip more than normal. It was so much more run down than I expected, the pictures must be old on their website. They kept running out of wine and vodka, the servers, some were quite friendly, others, not so much. Their english was not great so hard to communicate. The entertainment wasn't what I normally see at other resorts either. The water around the pool had lots of algae and smelt so bad. The grass wasn't mowed, the basketball and tennis courts should be torn down, no nets even to play if you wanted too. Gym smelled so bad, wires hanging out of the ceilings. I could go on and on. The food wasn't good, but I guess that is normal for Cuba. The pool area is nice, the beach and water were great, definitely the highlight. I hate to leave negative reviews and comments but felt other guests should know what to expect before booking, I wish I had done more research. [Details]

Beautiful beach and grounds. Staff is very helpful if you have questions and very friendly even if you don't. Staff at the buffet and a la cartes are awesome and deserve much of the credit for the atmosphere of this resort. Always happy and humming and smiling. All in all our stay was amazing as the staff was very nice. If you are going to Cuba for the food then you will be disappointed because your expectations will be to high. The food is bland but they do have a variety of it and there will always be something you will enjoy (try not to be to picky). Our room was big and clean (not new) and had no drawers to put your cloths in. The shows were very nice since you could just sit have a drink and listen to the singers every night. The access to go to Varadero was very easy and safe. The facilities at the gym are poor but you can manage to get a workout anyways. One thing I would recommend while going in Nov. would be to take mosquito repellent since at night in the lobby there were lots of mosquitos (not sure if time of year since was at another resort in June and did not have that problem). Would I go again? Yes I would. Loved it. [Details]

The strong points
The best part of a resort for me is the beach and the water was warm, clear and amazing. All staff were caring and welcoming.
Room was clean, plenty of hot water in the shower. Easy to access bus to Varadero. Very safe place to go.
The weak points
No drawers in room to put your cloth in (just closet). Food lacks a bit of taste. Not impressed with excursion to Havana as the guide was not that good, food at the restaurant was not enough for 8 people, lots of time spent on bus.

There was only 1 person doing checkins, so we stood in line for awhile. We were greeted and given half a smile, given our room keys, safe key and towel card and map and pretty much left to find our room on our own. The concierge came over and took our luggage, he's the one who told us how to find our rooms. The exchange on our currency was very expensive, as the charge 11%. Upon finding our room, the bungalows are old and dated. The resort maps around the property are in stone and are old and cracked- very hard to read. The entertainment information is posted on 1 wall and if someone doesn't point it out- you have NO idea on times or places! The resort was ‘out' of a lot of things- no mint for mojitos, no calamari etc. The ladies washroom in the lobby was closed most of the time, so we were limited to the one by the buffet on the ground level, not a huge problem just very inconvenient. The ‘store' is nice, however they carry very few essentials that you may have forgotten or are in need of. A la carte reservations are made by 1 person, so you will find yourself lining up for anywhere from 5-30 mins to make reservations. There never seemed to be enough servers in any of the bars, as you could wait up to 15-20 mins for a refill. There were no servers around the pool or at the beach bar. The sulfur smell the lagoon creates is rather unpleasant during the hotter days. Most guests we talked to were all in agreement, we all paid way too much to stay at this resort. I suggest you do your research, there are nicer, cheaper and better equipped resorts than this one. The beach is beautiful, however people use it as their own personal ashtray - and garbage can, if you take a drink from the beach bar , the garbage cans are located back by the pathway so many just left the plastic cups behind. This was my second vacation to Cuba, if this had been my first visit- I would be very discouraged over the amount I paid vs the quality and rating of this resort. [Details]

The majority of staff at this resort were very nice & great to interact with!!! The buffet was ok, what you expect to find in Cuba. A la carte restaurants were good.
The weak points
Pool(s) are small and set up a bit odd. You have to walk around the pool to get to the outside theatre to watch the nightly entertainment. Nightly shows were all basically the same - only difference seemed to be costume changes.
Dear Carrie:

It is only through feedback such as yours that we are able to maintain and improve upon the service that we provide to our guests. This was our first trip to Cuba and we really enjoyed the experience. It was very HOT this time of year which we loved. The hotel staff were friendly and accommodating. The nightly entertainment was terrific, especially the synchronized swimming. The beach was fantastic from the beautiful sand / water to the cleanliness and music plus the bar / BBQ were only steps away. There were fish and sharks outside the buffet area (non pool or beach). There were many daily activities to take part in with lots of musical entertainers. Our day trip tour to Havana was exceptional and our 1/2 day trip to Varadero in a PINK convertible Cadillac was great fun. The locals were all very friendly. The room was clean (thanks to Mitchi), the bed was comfortable but the bathroom was in need of a reno. We had plenty of HOT water and the fridge was well stocked. The patio door wouldn't lock properly. We were warned about the food in Cuba not being good BUT we enjoyed it all. The buffet had a wide variety of food to choose from and the outside BBQ was terrific. The food did have taste contrary to what we had heard. The a la carte restaurants were disappointing. Big PLUS was that we were only 30 minutes from the airport therefore we were on the beach by 10:30 am (first day was a full day to enjoy the resort). No doctor or health clinic on site if you need medical assistance the front desk would call the ambulance. Be careful with the mosquitos / flies - bring bug repellant. [Details]

Only a 3.5 hour flight from Toronto and resort only 30 minutes from the airport. Beach and people were AWESOME! We felt very welcomed and will definitely return again.
The weak points
Hotel was dated and needs a reno in certain areas.(like most hotels in Cuba) For safety reasons, the walkways needed more light at night. (replace light bulbs)

We were pleased with the hotel, it exceeded our expectations. The staff were courteous and attentive, the pool and the beach were magnificent. The room was as shown in the brochure. The hotel shows some signs of wear, I suspect this is a common Cuban issue but no problems at all and we would return which is the best way to sum it up. [Details]

The strong points
The pool and the beach were great, no seaweed, you can walk out in the ocean for a hundred feet and still be chest deep on a sandy bottom. The pool was large and clean with gentle walk outs, plenty of room for everyone.
The weak points
As with most poor countries the food is not great but you navigate it, the a la carte restaurants are an option as is the poolside "snack bar" but Cuba is not the place for those that want North American quality food service.

Check in went fine. Our first room didn't have a great view - we overlooked the restaurant building - however we purchased a super saver room. The room itself was clean and a nice size. Our air conditioning wasn't working right so on our second day we changed rooms and were given the choice of staying in the main building or move to one of the bungalow buildings. We chose the bungalow building.
Our first experience at the buffet was good. We did not make it the first night until 9:30 - the buffet closes at 10:00 so as this is Cuba I was not expecting much. The food choices were so much and varied and they were still putting out food - I was so pleasantly surprised. This hotel had the best food I have come across in five trips to Cuba.
We did a lot of activities with the Activity Staff - games around the pool - wonderful staff - so friendly.
Overall hotel staff were very friendly and helpful except a couple that weren't.
The pool was clean, grounds well looked after and always being looked after.
I would return in a heartbeat and plan on returning one day. [Details]

The beach! The beach at this hotel is one of the best I have ever seen and I am a frequent traveller. You can walk out at least half a block into the crystal clear ocean and the water is still below shoulder height - and you can still see your toes!

The property is a little older however was still very clean and well maintained

Beaches are still great. The main hotel is clean and most of the staff are pleasant. Rooms were good, but the bed we had was a rock. We went to our friend's room and they had an amazing mattress, so not all mattresses have been replaced. Food was below average from North America standards. BBQ outside the buffet was good. A la cartes were good. [Details]

Relaxing Week
[Details]

Very good choice of drinks from all bars and restaurants.
Rooms look dated and not well maintained.
The choice of food is limited and no flavors.

My Special Place
I loved it
LOVED my first trip to Cuba
Our 10 days at Melia Las Antillas
Rooms: Our room was very musty smelling and I know why, no ventilation of any kind in the bathroom area. Not because they weren't working, there was no evidence of a fan ever being there!
The mosquitos were brutal and I had visions of breaking my mirror at the sink because that's the only way I could kill them.
The Food:
I know Cuba is not known for their tasty food but we had a real problem getting the basics.
The Grounds:
The river on the grounds was very smelly.
[Details]
Trip to cuba
NICE RESORT
Wonderful stay, returning in October
[Details]

The food wasn't good, but I guess that is normal for Cuba. The pool area is nice, the beach and water were great, definitely the highlight.
