Our vacation rep told us this was the worst resort in Cuba AFTER we got there. Please save yourself the disappointment and don't book. We managed to make the best of our vacation because hey we were out of the snow but it was far from what we had imagined. There are no drink options never has the ingredients to make pina coladas margaritas daquaeies mojitos etc. So Your choices are beer or rum punch. No milk for coffee or toliet paper in rooms. Not to mention our room had dirty cutlery and butter packets in it when we arrived and clearly had not been cleaned. Rooms also had cockroaches and doors did not lock properly due to broken locks and we were told the whole week someone would come repair is but never did. As I said we were trying to make the best of it so on the 3rd day we made the decision to no longer ask for things because that only annoyed us and brought our mood down. Our beds only had a sheet on it so we asked for a blanket - no luck out of blankets. We asked for help with the tv one afternoon- told that the tv doesn't work. We received the complimentary bottle of water that was advertised to be left in our room daily 2 of 7 days and when we asked the front desk we were told the water shipment didn't come. No clean towels the entire 7 day's. The majority of washrooms in the public areas don't have doors that lock so get used to walking in on and being walked in on. I much preferred to use the washroom in my room but with a never working elevator and 7 floors that wasn't possible. It seemed like no one respected the place and we found ourselves picking up others trash on the beach/pool. Besides a few exceptions staff where horrible, rude and dismissive but honestly can't blame them when they have to tell people no all day. I also witnessed a male staff videotaping girls in swimsuits on his cell phone but the real piece de resistance was when a member of our group was sexually assaulted by the cook at the snack bar. The cook asked to kiss her ass but was told no and she offered a hug instead to which he forcefully bent her down and her bit her ass. None of our complaints where taken seriously and we got a lot of “this is cuba” THIS IS NOT CUBA! If you want to experience true Cuban hospitality keep looking! [Details]

Gran Caribe Playa Caleta.
We will not come back just because of the cigarette and cigar smoking, way way to much, no respect watsoever for nonsmokers.
The only place I did not smell smoke was in my room and in the bus.
Paradise for smoking people. [Details]

The strong points
Nice room, Food practically all day, Good coffee selection, Bar opened 24 hrs, Friendly staff, Good selection of food, Nice dining rooms, Good water front beach, Good night entertainment, Good Swimming pool and parks, Over all beautiful.
The weak points
Far from downtown Varadero, Not enough free transportation to and from downtown, 2 a day. Local transportation expensive. No respect for non smoking people. People smoke EVERYWHERE, lobby, corridors, elevators and dining rooms. Wi-Fi $$

Staff is the highlight

We moved from the Puntarena to this hotel after one night and thankfully the rooms were better. We did have some problems operating our safe in our room just had to have patience with it. The downfall with the room was no available hot water for the whole week. we tried at multiple different hours, even stayed up past 11pm and first thing in the morning to middle of the day to no avail. then there were times that the hotel ran out of water completely. Twice that we know of. Elevators didnt work half the time, coffee bars would break down and you would have to go next door for coffee, no toilet paper in bathrooms,no currency exchange as stated and its a 3 km walk to the nearest bank if you miss the free bus. You can only book the a la carte meals once and at 3pm the day of but when you go you are told they are full for 4 days. The resort was overrun with a specific nationality that felt very entitled and seemed to bully everyone guests and staff around. Internet access is cheap 2 CUC per hour but it is spotty if it works at all. The location is not bad but is the first hotel you come to in Varedaro, but with that being said you are also only a few kms from town.

The highlight was the staff, the bartenders were fabulous, the waitstaff were wonderful in the buffet and the maid that we had did a great job even adding parts of our halloween costume onto the towel swans on the bed.

Although this room was slightly better quality the hotel was still shared with the sister hotel and I dont believe I would book at either of them again. [Details]
