Another Great Vacay at Melia JDR

Our 5th (maybe 6th?) visit to Melia JDR, our 2nd visit since their re-opening post-COVID closure.
As with EVERY visit, the people are what make or break the vacation.
At Melia the Staff make our vacation each and every time! I have nothing but praise for the Staff; from Management, to Bartenders & Servers, Front Desk, Cooks, Housekeepers, Gardeners…they always have a smile and they all try their very hardest to keep you happy.
Other guests can break your vacation; if you allow it! Always come well-packed with patience and broad shoulders! Lol. We've travelled enough to expect the rudeness of some travellers; it's a hard pill to swallow, but you can't let it ruin your week!
Our room was wonderful; it was kept clean and restocked all week.
The Beach has improved since our last visit in November 2022. It amazes me how much the beach changes from visit to visit. We came during a windy spell, so there was quite a bit of seaweed washed in. As soon as the wind had settled a tractor was brought in to rake it away. They are still busy building many new papalas. Beach chairs were harder to find this visit, but we were told more were being ordered.
The food was comparable to our past visits, with a few shortages here and there throughout the week; pasta is still hit or miss, the 24-hr Snack Bar had limited choices at times and the Pizza Bar was definitely popular and ran out of pizzas well before it's posted closing time of 3:00pm. That being said, we were well-fed all week, with plenty of food & drink options. There is only 1 Main Buffet open, but the Beach Buffet was open for Breakfast and Lunch. Most of the a la Carte restaurants are open. Our favourite was the International.
The weather was windier and cooler during our visit. The bugs were a bit better than our last visit; I am rarely bothered by the noseeums, but my husband is usually eaten alive! He's tried everything to prevent bites; our best tips are to wear long sleeves and pants in the evening & dab Vicks Vapor Rub between your toes and on your wrists. If they like you, there's no stopping them! Lol
All in all another great trip! Definitely won't be our last! It's nice to find a place that feels like a second home; we know what to expect and can settle in with ease! Until next time… [Details]

We returned from MJR on Tuesday evening to -30C. (I want to go back brrrr.) We were there for 14 nights, 2 couples. before leaving I had reviewed many of the comments posted about the situation there. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. We had requested first floor rooms close to each other and thanks to Yohander Hernandez Guevara he made it happen, he genuinely cares. We truly appreciated the help and assistance of Lisbet Guevara Machado both of them made our vacation wonderful, many thanks. Yes it's true they are missing some things like vodka and Gin but you have rum, whiskey, and spanish coffee! Food wise we ate very well, lots of fish, Chicken, pork, even lobster. Yes you need to bring water shoes, for the first few feet of getting into the ocean. The last hurricane did a number on the beach, but to our surprise the corals are amazing, we did snorkelling almost every day. It was our second time at this resort and I can definitely recommend it. My husband and I came in 2016 and from our memorable experience we wanted to plan another trip for his birthday. We got a large group together and are not disappointed. We are able to do group excursions together, the staff are great and the drinks are strong. There are a lot of places that only take credit cards that change to USD.

Also Canadian coins are not accepted at the bank so they need to exchange with other tourists. It's best to tip with USD or 5$ bills Canadian. [Details]

Another Great Vacation @ MJDR!

*Sorry it's a long review but almost everything you need to know is in this!
*Please note, this hotel only reopened a couple of months ago after being closed due to covid. It is not at full capacity as of yet. Some blocks are still closed and the second large buffet is not open yet.

After reading some negative reviews before we came we really wondered what was happening. We were just there at the end of November and we just couldn't see how things could have changed so fast. We had talked amongst our selves and assured each other that it was just "those people". You know the people that yell at the gentleman holding the door open at the buffet because they didn't get towels..... yes those people. Needless to say we were correct!
We had a fantastic time!
I have said it in many of my travel reviews that my biggest complaint has been the actions of others. I'm going to leave it at that but seriously some people really need to think before doing.

We flew air transat and have never had a problem.

We walked off the plane @8:54pm and we were drinking beer in our room by 10:15pm. Yes we were through customs, got our luggage, got on the shuttle bus, checked in and walked to our room in beautiful block 19 and we were drinking the cold beer out of our fridge in under an hour and a half! This is one of the major reasons I choose Cayo Coco over Cayo Santa Maria after traveling to Cuba many times.

The Room.
Our room was very nice and super clean. Bed was a king and it was comfortable. The air was ice cold and so was the fridge. Our toilet flushed perfectly, the toilet seat was a little loose but no problems.
One day we had no water for long enough to figure out we didn't have water only to realize we had water again lol. Hot water, I only had two "cooler" showers all week and they were at prime time. Water was always very hot just before or just after 5pm. Our towels we used until mid week and then placed on the floor. We had clean towels later that afternoon. Two beer and 1 large bottle of water were brought to our room everyday except the first day. (We did arrive just the night before so we weren't worried) The fridge restockers are separate then the maid. Feel free to leave them a little tip.

Snack Bar;
I am a snacker so I loved this place! One day however we decided to eat late and they were out of food. When we went to the other buffets they were closing and pizza bar just finished. 100% bad timing for us lol. We always bring some snacks so we were not bothered too bad. About an hour and a half later we saw people walking by us with Fries and sandwiches at the pool. Needless to say they were not out for long so please don't take it out on the workers, they don't need your attitude. They are doing what they can.
99% of the time; Ham and Cheese Sandwich
60% of the time; Chicken, Tuna, Ham and Cheese sandwiches and Fries.
40% of the time; All listed sandwiches above and fries and Hot dogs.

Pizza Bar;
A BUSY PLACE! The Pizza is very very good. I do believe they need to increase the time this is open if possible to take the rush and pressure off of it. It is said to be open from 12-3pm as it was when we were there in November but we found out that "last chance" for Pizza is at 1:30. We tried @2:30, then 2:00 then 1:47 and finally successfull by arriving @1:30. It is not fast, we seen some people eating 2 and 3 pizzas each! Also many people taking 6-9 pizzas to go! I thought maybe putting a limit to 1 per seated person would be a good idea but that will just get people angry so perhaps longer hours like 11-4?. Not sure the answer there. Either way it was well worth the wait as it was delicious! We ordered at 1:35pm and were done eating at 2:20pm

Buffets,
I recorded all my times in lines and such because people were saying they were waiting an hour and such for food. As I expected, not the case; our longest wait in a line for FRESH COOKED food was 26mins. If you don't want to wait in a line to get in to the buffet then don't go when it opens! We found 8pm to be super nice for dinner and breakfast we always went around 9am.
We were never in the buffet for an hour total from in to out.
Did they run out of plates? Yes. How long until more Plates? 2 mins and 47 secs on one timed occasion. I seen multiple times where the plate stack was empty. I would get in line and watch people frantically running around looking for plates instead of relaxing a bit and waiting just a few minutes for them to be restocked. My wife would bring me a plate or I would excuse myself from the line for a moment to grab one. If you are wondering why they may be low on plates, it is probably because guests feel the need to leave them everywhere on the resort. On the beach, on lights on garbage cans, you get the idea. Please just return your plates and other dishes to a table somewhere!
Favorite Buffet foods were;
Breakfast; Fresh omelette with extra cheese from cheese bar, Bacon and Toast. Waffles were delicious as well.
Lunch;
Fresh cooked chicken, curry chicken and rice.
Dinner;
Gnocchi Pasta hands down best ever! Also had fresh Chicken and such but that pasta was amazing.

A La Cartes ;
Oh my! We had some very good meals. To book the A la Cartes you have to wait in line at the lobby in the morning. I may suggest one person gets in line and the other grabs some cappuccinos to help the time pass.

Favorites in order;
1) International, by a landslide. Amazing meal! And A service! The Cream Cheese soup was sooo good, I got more lol. Thank you Yenni and Denaris. Not sure on spelling and I do not know the other girls names but the crew that work here is amazing.

2) Italian, very good and had to get some extra Lasagna!

3) Mediterranean, Rice pudding dessert here was very very good.

I drank a lot of the rose wine lol and the wife drank the white wine. Red was good as well but the rose and the white were out preferred wines.

Pool;
Party pool behind snack bar.
Pool is big and clean and Papa and his crew of fantastic women make it a fun place to be in the afternoon.
Games take place pool side at 4pm and are a blast even to just watch if you don't want to participate.
Fashion shows also take place at this pool.
Miguel will be happy to grab you chairs, treat him well ;).

Quiet pool;
It's big, it's quiet and we don't go there. It is a good place for you to go if you feel that music is "obnoxious" lol. Yes someone said that to me lol.

Ice cream bar:
Very good
Pack a washable plastic spoon in your beach bag as they don't always have Spoons. The plastic knives worked fine but why not bring your own.

**NEW Coffee and ice cream bar just outside the lobby. Never got to go there as they were just finishing it. It looks amazing!

Beach;
Beautiful!
Lots of winds the first 2 days brought in a lot of seaweed and they brought in a tractor and got it all cleaned up on Day 3.
Left of the beach bar soft sandy entrance and you can walk a long ways out on the sand bars.
Right of the beach bar some spots to go out but more rocks, water shoes recommended.
Far right of the beach bar tonnes of sand to walk on or out to the sand bars.

Beach Bar;
Lots of drink options including pina coladas. Ran by some amazing guys, Joel, Omelio and Yosley. Keep coming, Keep coming! See you in 5 minutes!

Lobby;
Spacious and clean with some fun thrown in there at night.

Lobby Bar;
Mornings, Cappuccino is a must!
Evenings, many drink options and Cappuccino and Spanish coffees.

We usually always book the catamaran and snorkeling seafood lunch trip (210$ cnd charged to card for 2 of us in Nov 22) . We did not this time but highly recommend it.

Market;
There is a market right beside the resort. Stores, outdoor vendors bowling ally and a Japanese restaurant. We went to the restaurant in 2018 and 2019 and it was delicious. We have not gone back as the price has doubled there per person.

Tips to make your stay great;
We always pack our own towel, cup, pillow (who doesn't like an extra pillow anyway), a roll of tp and condiments such as Peanut butter, soy sauce, maple syrup and ketchup. Small bottles can be found at many stores then we leave what's left for a worker if they want it. For medication type things, tums, benadryl, advil, Tylenol, Hydro cortisone cream (I find if used right away on noseum bites it reduces the itch to only 3 days) to back that up we bring a anti itch cream) they only ever bite me not my wife lol. Bring a converter! They are cheap and if you always travel with it you never need to wonder about plugging stuff in. Last but probably not least we bought a luggage scale (12$) to make sure our suitcases are not over. Damp clothes and such can add a lot of wieght even if you brought tonnes of stuff to give out. I hope this helps. As far as gifts to bring for workers, if you use it they need it! Any thing else above and beyond is truly appreciated. Also a subject that is beat to death. Please stop taking coins! You don't need to! People say it's to much to tip with 5s etc. You can always bring some american 1$ for small tips. You can also just tip less often with 5$ bills if you like. Or you can buy change off of almost any worker when you get there! If you want to take some to start maybe take like 10$ then just keep buying more to use. At the end buy at least double you came with. That would be a reasonable start!. I hope this helps!

Amazing Vacation

Overall it was a good vacation pools, beach, ice cream hut were all good. The food was ok it was what I had expected, never went hungry and had great service at the pool bar. Went with my 3 grandchildren we brought nutella and peanut butter as there is no milk or cereal for breakfast. Went to the pizza restaurant for lunch so they were good. The biggest problem was the under age drinking the hotel does not have wristbands so anyone can get an alcoholic drink. My daughter and our grandchildren had two 15 year old kids Connor and Kennedy next door who were in a room by themselves drunk all week, they were loud and disruptive every night slamming doors, fighting swearing keeping everyone up. How any parent could let a 15 year old girlfriend and boyfriend room alone unsupervised is beyond me. First time in Cayo coco! And definitely not my last! It was a beautiful resort, bigger than usual for cuba! But well spaced out and organized! We had a bungalow near the beach, the buffet near the beach even offered breakfast! I would recommend walking to the right of the beach when facing the water, there are a lot less rocks ! We spoke to someone who works there and they said the rocks are due to the recent hurricane and they were trying to get it fixed ASAP, but if you walk to the right where the parasol ends it's beautiful and you could walk right in(a lot of people had water shoes) ! Would expect, but Christmas Eve dinner was exceptional. The room we had was ocean view and lovely. The chambermaids kept the room spotless, and did it with a smile. Front desk staff were also so welcoming and kind as I have come to expect from this lovely resort. I strongly recommend anyone who is looking for a beautiful beach, warm people, and a relaxing time to visit here. Lastly, I want to apologize to all of the staff for the disgraceful behaviour of the Canadians and everyone! If it wasn't them emptying entire trays of food onto their own plate with the gluttony, then leaving it on the table not eaten, we saw a 25 to 30 year old man from Quebec with his parents, seeing us as well as many young children and families -and he was urinating on the beach! Simply dissapointed

The time spent in the hotel was a big disappointment.
What stood out right when we arrived and surprised me was that there were no Christmas decorations, Christmas spirit, or Christmas music. There were places we visited in previous years, and the whole resort was decorated with Christmas decorations in the middle of November, but there was nothing here.

If you need to use the Internet, you should pay extra to the service provider before you go because the internet service you get inside the resort equals less than nothing. After several hours of trying, thanks to Adalberto, we could connect to the Internet, but it kept cutting off because the server was so loaded.

On the first night, we were about to go to the buffet for dinner when we noticed a massive line in front of the door to the buffet.
We didn't understand why; we thought that people were so afraid of starvation that they started standing in line half an hour before opening. The next day the same thing happened and what was even more shocking was that after we were inside, we had to stand in another line to get freshly roasted chicken or pork. To add more to the “shocking” list, the next thing was that all the plates were gone in less than 1 hour, so we had to stand in another line up again inside the buffet and wait for clean dishes to be brought out. It was chaotic. Unfortunately, this happened continuously every day except for breakfast. Things were somehow easier at breakfast, and I didn't have to stand in line in front of the door, but if I wanted to eat eggs or pancakes, then yes, another line-up. I want to emphasize that no one will starve because rice is always available in several versions, and vegetables and beans are almost always on the menu. There was also pasta every day while we were there. There is always delicious bread and butter, so no one goes hungry.
During our previous visit, we were able to book all à la cart restaurant at once, now for some reason, you can only do it for one night at a time, and if you want to experience more à la cart, you have to line up again the next day and the day after. Then you have to line up for beach towels which are gone in less than 20 minutes, so if you want clean beach towels, you have to line up again well before the towers are brought to the booth. Then you have to line up for a coffee in the lobby or wait until someone comes around to take your order.

Christmas dinner, another disappointment. We got divided into 2, early diners at 7:00 pm and later at 9:00 pm. Again, we had to wait and line up even though we had a reservation. The food was mostly the same as on a regular day except for roasted pork, ham, deviled eggs and lobster, and I saw only four lobster pieces left when we got close to the buffet area. We have noticed many people piling excessive food on their plates, not considering anyone else.
At the snack and pizza bar, the locals were served first, regardless if they came after others. They don't line up; they go in front of everyone without shame. On one occasion, we had to wait 50 minutes until we got food on the table; meanwhile, all locals were served enough food to feed a few large families.

Returning guests were invited to a special dinner on the third night; the idea was good, but here I expected a little more, and it was my fault, I have to admit. They would have done better if they had given every returning guest a bottle of rum. The dinner was organized next to the pool, where it was so dark you could hardly see where you were going; they tried to lighten up the place by placing some very bright & colourful vibrating lights at the edge of the pool. Everyone had to sit with their backs to these lights.
The food was very simple but delicious!

Regarding the toilet, you should know that the one next to the buffet is only sometimes open, so if you spend time around the lobby, you need to use the toilet beside the lobby bar, which may run out of toilet paper quite frequently. The lobby has no festive atmosphere, music, or decoration and is boring. As for drinks, we only saw red & white wine, rum and whiskey. The rooms are cleaned daily, but you are not getting clean towels every day. (we had no problem with this, just as a heads up for some people) They are put back neatly; you may not even notice they are used towels. When we arrived, we got two beers in the fridge, only one or none, after that, even if we left a tip on the refrigerator. Then we asked the receptionist why we got only one when two people were assigned to a room. There was no straight answer. All we got was that they would speak to the delivery guy, and the next day, we got two beers again. 
But after that day, only one beer, which is fine considering that you can have some at the snack bar or in the lobby, but the point is that during our previous visits, it was always two beers (according to how many adults were in the room) and 2 to 4 soft drinks in the fridge plus water.

The door to our balcony was damaged, and we could barely open and close it; although they came to fix it, nothing changed. The closet door had to be repaired, and the room door had to be repaired three times because the door did not close.
These things are annoying because the hotel was closed for three years. Before the opening, I read news about significant works and renovations underway in preparation for the reopening. So, where did the renovations take place? Because from what we saw, no upgrades took place, everything is old, and everything is repaired only when necessary. We couldn't shower appropriately on the third evening because there was no hot water, but we got over it, thinking they would fix it.
We could only use cold water for showering the last two days because it was neither warm nor lukewarm. The last three days were tough for us, as we do not like to complain and cause inconvenience to anyone. Around our building, the smell was so bad that I nearly puked. The public washroom smelt better than there. And the smell, unfortunately, got through the ventilation system right in our room and was unbelievably stinky; during the day was okay because we were not in the room, but at night it was unbearable.

Don't go to this resort without water shoes because you won't be able to enjoy the water and it would be an extra disappointment for you.
This beach was the reason we returned for the third time because it was always unbelievably beautiful, but unfortunately, that's not the case anymore, and this is not the resort's fault.
What is their fault is that they don't care about the sand; during our stay, we have not seen anyone not even trying to level the sand or clean up the dirt that the water brought to the shore.

This was the third vacation we spent at this resort, and I regret it was also the last. Most employees are doing their absolute very best to please us. Unfortunately, the service is far away from what it was. The management needs to step up and care about how those employees will do their jobs.

In closing, please remember that everything I wrote was our own experience, and if you don't like it, it's not my fault. If anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

Couples Birthday getaway

Back from an amazing trip from Melia Jardine's Del Rey. This hotel has bin closed for over two years and it was great to be back again.This hotel is never a disappointment, always something for everyone.
We arrived on November 25th at night ..where the check-in was fast and smooth. and just a quick shuttle ride and we were in our room with a beautiful suite upgrade We stayed in Bungalow 18 with amazing ocean views truly breathtaking .I absolutely loved the location it was close to the beach and the pools.
The rooms are spacious and very modern our maid Niyaris was a sweetheart I always looked forward to coming back to the room to find a beautiful display so nice
The pools
The pools are massive each having it's own pool bar with lots of sun loungers you never having a problem getting a chair at any time of day . If you are in the mood for peace and quiet you have the quiet pool if you are in the mood for something more lively and fun than you have the party pool where at around 4:00 the entertainment starts with games and music where Calderon and Machado and the rest of the entertainment team do an amazing job by keeping you entertained. We definitely cannot forget to mention Papa one of my favorite bartenders at the pool bar always with a smile on his face and a cold drink in his hand for you bar staff always working hard to keep you hydrated hahaha

Beautiful beach
This beach is absolutely stunning turquoise water , the ocean is extremely calm perfect for using a floaty or for long walks to take in the amazing views.I must mention that they are putting up brand new Palapas and increasing the shaded seating area.Yuni is the beach attendant and is always so helpful greeting ypu every morning and get you a beach chair he is so friendly it did not take long at all for us to become good friends. It's always a good idea to bring water shoes as there are sharp shells in certain areas I personally only needed them for the first couple of days after I got familiar with the area I no longer needed them. This beach has a huge sand bar and is great for taking pictures
A big shout out to Joel, Omilio, and the rest of the beach bar staff they were all amazing always happy and working hard this hotel even has waiter service on the beach which is a nice touch

Food
Buffet I found that the food was very good there was always something to choose from and they seemed to be adding more items daily. They had the fried rice station open one day

Back from an amazing trip from Melia Jardine's Del Rey. This hotel is never a disappointment, always something for everyone.
We arrived on November 25th where the check-in was fast and smooth. and before we knew it we were in our room with a beautiful suite upgrade We stayed in Bungalow 18 which I absolutely loved it was close to the beach and the pools.
The rooms are spacious and very modern our maid Niyaris was a sweetheart I always looked forward to coming back to the room to find a beautiful display for that we thank you.
The pools
The pools are massive and beautiful with lots of sun loungers never having a problem getting a chair. If you are in the mood for peace and quiet you have the quiet pool if you are in the mood for something more lively and fun than you have the party pool where at around 4:00 the entertainment starts with games and music where Calderon and Machado do an amazing job by keeping you entertained. We definitely cannot forget to mention Papa one of my favorite bartenders at the pool bar always with a smile on his face and a cold drink in his hand for you.

Beautiful beach
This beach is absolutely stunning turquoise water , the ocean is extremely calm perfect for long walks. I must mention that they are putting up brand new Palapas. Yuni is always so helpful and ready to get you a beach chair he is so friendly it did not take long at all for us to become good friends. It's always a good idea to bring water shoes as there are sharp shells in certain areas I personally only needed them for the first couple of days after I got familiar with the area I no longer needed them.
A big shout out to Joel, Omilio, and the rest of the beach bar staff they were all amazing always happy and working hard this hotel even has waiter service on the beach which is a big plus.

Food
Buffet I found that the food was very good there was always something to choose from and they seemed to be adding more items daily.
The pizza bar was amazing fast and friendly service.
Always something to eat at the 24-hour snack bar. The lobster dinner for repeat guest was amazing for that we thank you. The A la cart restaurants were all very good.

Another great stay at MJDR

*Note; this review was made while resort was NOT at full capacity as it only reopened a month prior to our arrival.

The wife and I arrived around 10pm on Nov 25th and left the resort @ 6:30pm on Friday night December 2nd. We went through Airports both Toronto and JDR with ease. We filled out the health and customs form and had it saved to our phone for our arrival in JDR. You can print it as well if you like. They scanned fine from our phones. The visa to fill out on the plane takes about a min to do. Bus ride takes 15min tops. Good thing because we had some great friends waiting for us with drinks that arrived the day before. We have been to Cuba 10 times and this was our forth time to this resort.
Before we left we requested a few different blocks for our rooms all around the same area and we all got in our preferred blocks.
Check in was fast, 1 to two drink wait in line for us and we were almost last in line.
It was good to see that the paths we had walked so many times before have more lighting now and new block numbers infront of every block.

Room was very clean. Unfortunately the a/c wasn't on and the fridge was off so our room beers that went down were not cold. Room was cold in about 30 min. Minor. Room fridge was refilled everyday with the beer we asked for and a big bottle of water. *Note* put a tip in the fridge upon arrival with your preferred requests and I am sure the fridge filling crew will do their best to accommodate you. Coming back to the room everyday to see what the maid made of our towels was always fun. Thank you! Remember folks the fridge team and the maids are two separate people.

Food was good but shortages showed this year for sure. That being said, we did not go hungry! Most noticeable shortage was my favorite, pasta!. I did have pasta twice, once in an a la carte and once in buffet. Fresh cooked chicken was a staple. I wish they had the fried rice station every night. We only had it once. Curry chicken at the lunch buffett was very good. My omelette brother did an amazing job again and was great to see he was still there. Super good guy but I am horrible with names. Cheese and ham please, no, ham and cheese! Lol.
The A la carte restaurant we went to was the Mediterranean. These dinners can be booked in the morning at the lobby/buffet entrance. Food was great but the wait was long compared to our friends table. The wine kept coming so it was ok but it sort of deterred us for booking another. Buffet was good and fast so why wait in line to book another a la carte. We didn't want to lose valuable beach time. Return guest dinner was amazing, lobster and pork. Started with salad and the best soup ever. I was blessed with a second bowl (thanks "Soup Guy" you know who you are).
24 hour snack bar showed some shortages as well. Hot dogs were not always available, no hamburgers this year. Basically ham and cheese, chicken salad or tuna salad sandwich and fries. These were all very good and the grilled buns were a nice touch. Ketchup was good and everywhere. Last two days we were there they opened a pizza bar at the quiet pool where the other snack bar used to be. Omg it was good!
Beach is beautiful. I have to admit it has lost some beauty in spots but gained in others. It is narrower then it used to be and the sand has shifted around over the last two years making it rocky in spots but sandier in others. We did not use water shoes. To the left of beach bar you can walk out in soft sand and head right towards the bouys. You can continue for a long long way following the sand bar out to the right towards the far point. If you stay to the right of the beach they are currently putting up new palapas where they used to be. They were a bit close together for our group so we always went past them. That side of the beach is what got robbed of sand, we did not wear water shoes. We found a good section to walk in on. Just be careful and take your time or wear water shoes for entry. Soft and sandy after first 10 feet. Always got chairs arriving to the beach after 10am. Life guard can help you find them and he will brush them off for you. A few bucks showing gratitude will go a long way for the next day [Details]

10/10 Experience on 4th Trip to Melia JDR

This is our 4th time to Melia JDR and as always we weren't disappointed! The resort was at partial capacity (I'm guessing about 1/3).
Despite some food/beverage shortages, we never walked away from a meal hungry/thirsty. There was an abundance of meat, rice, sides & bread at lunch/dinner. Eggs/omelets, bacon & sides for breakfast. Even pizza by the end of our trip when the 2nd Snack Bar opened as a Pizza Bar! The only thing we really missed from previous stays was the pasta station & fried rice station. Hopefully they will be available when the resort increases capacity/when supplies are available. Not all of the buffets/a la carts were open, but there were enough to accommodate the number guests at the current capacity.
Our room was clean and tended to daily. Never an issue with towels, toilet paper or beer/water. They no longer stock soda in the fridges, but that wasn't an issue for us.
The grounds were as beautiful as ever—always saw the gardeners tending to grass and gardens!
The beach has changed significantly, likely due to the last storms and lack of human use; but it's still one of the nicest beaches we've been on. They are working on rebuilding palapas, but there's shade closer to the back row near the trees if you prefer shade (not this girl!). Entry into the water is much rougher than previous years (shells, rocks), so water shoes are a good idea. We did discover a few entry points that were smoother than others, mostly to the left side of the beach closer to the water sports area.
The main highlight of our vacation is always the Melia JDR staff—they were as fantastic as ever this trip! Both old and new staff—they make Cuba feel like a second home and keep us coming back [Details]

My wife and I were here for 1 week in November and had a great stay. The hotel is very clean and inviting and all staff are exceptional and do whatever they can to make your stay a memorable one.
