 ROYAL DECAMERON PANAMA

This resort was quite nice and offers the standard all inclusive resort style of dining & accommodation. A long bus drive from the airport but provides an opportunity to see the country. Food ok, staff friendly, beach so so.

 Nickle and dime

The experience was not enjoyable. The flight was fantastic, the bus broke on the way to the hotel tired and thirsty we than had to navigate our way with our luggage to the hotel a maze on multiple levels. The room were without a fridge or iron coffee maker etc. The rooms were not being cleaned or supplied I had to call in for toilet paper. Extra costs such as an extra key internet security box towels etc. Staff was unpleasant to deal with with a few exceptions. Food was okay drink service terrible, ocerall I would not return.

 Panama - Royal Decameron

The hotel was GREAT! The Staff - GREAT! The food was good and the beach was good the weather was BEAUTIFUL! The staff was helpful and friendly - very little English speaking people however they all try to communicate and do a great job! The resort is large and plenty of pools, seats, food, drinks and sun! Would definitely go here again! Some people complained about the walking - it was great to walk and nothing was that far its good to walk after resting, eating and drinking all day. Issues we had were with other travellers being rude - the people from Panama were terrific. You are travellin to a different country - try to learn their language. The food was great - sea food, chicken and fruit delicious!

 Lots of stairs

The resort is quite large and spread out. For that reason when we booked with friends we requested rooms in the same building. I was in building 4300, friends were in in buildings 4600 and 1900. The resort couldn't move us together because one couple was there of only a week. Very dissapointed in the attitude. We asked to be moved to ocean front and closer to 1900 for our second week. Got ocean front but still far away from our friends. The resort has a huge amount of stairs! We've never had problems with stairs before but 3 out of 4 had bad knees by the second week. You can't avoid them - if you stay ocean front you have to climb them to the alacarts, internet, store and lobbys. If you stay up top you climb them to get to the pools and beach. The resort was a beautiful resort with lots of trees. It was kept up and the public areas and rooms were clean. The food was good, it was interesting some nights and some stuff was watered down - syrop, cheese sauce, dressings. You have to remember that half of their guests are from central and south america so food choices cater to them also. It's not 5 star north american food but it was good. No one ever went hungry. The drinks were plentyful and typical resort drinks. We did find that there was always an alacarte closed because of a wedding using it or another function in it. That was dissapointing. There are lots of pools and beach chairs. The problem is getting shade. Someone from our group got up at 6:00 every morning to make sure we got shade. If you were later then that you wouldn't get any. You didn't have to worry about anyone taking your personal stuff. It was never touched. The only problem we saw and it happend to people we knew, was that guests who did not book all inclusive would take the blue resort towels - they could "purchase" a towel card for $25 and if they returned the towel got $10 back. Easier to take them I guess. The rooms were clean and in good shape. Both our rooms were on the second floor and in the middle so we did hear noise from the other rooms. The others had top floor, end rooms and didn't hear much of anything. The 4000 buildings are newer but our second room was in an older build and still quite good. I'd label the new buildings a 4 star and older ones a 3 just because of the age. They were painted and kept up but didn't have the wonderful bedding that the new build did. English is widely spoken at the resort. We did get our tour rep to translate for us when we wanted to change rooms; just so there were no mixups. They have a large amount of spanish speaking guest and really don't need the english speaking guest to fill the hotel. There was always someone working that understood english and spoke enough to help you. Remember - we're guests in their country, we should be learning spanish if we want to travel there. Someone in the group used all of the water sport equipment at some point. Snorkeling and diving were not good at the resort, the sea doos were fun, parasailing was good and we took the kayakas out a few times. If you know in advance what you want to do I'd barter for a better price. Our group took out 4 sea doos one day, 2 went parasailing another, and 2 went fishing. We bartered and got about 10% off. The resort is far away from Panama City and the tours offered there. Anton Valle is close but other then that it's a 2 hour ride. We went to Woody's bar which is a short walk down the beach. It's owned by a Canadian and the food was very good. We also booked our own car and driver to do tours. It was a quicker drive and we could customize our tour to what we wanted to see. Over all our experience at the resort was good. Like all trips there were the little things that went wrong or weren't 100% as described but if you can roll with them it'll be a good holiday. Oh ya, the "black stuff" on the beach - it's volcanic silt. It doesn't stain or hurt you and the RED flags mean jelly fish. One of our group got stung but not badly.

 Nice Beach

I would not recommend this hotel. I was expecting a lot more from a four star hotel. I paid for an Ocean View, high room, when I got there they gave us a stinky ground floor filthy room. I requested to switch rooms and was told I'd have to wait until morning. I ended up getting a new room that night when I refused to sleep in that one. I still did not get what I asked for but it was better. Air conditioning was not working 3 times, took me getting upset to finally get it fixed. Staff doesn't understand english very well but a couple were very good and smiled, that said most are not very friendly. The beach is great, waters warm. If you are expecting to be waited on while on holiday you will not get that at this resort. They do not serve drinks you must go to the bar, the snack bars at lunch are always hot dogs and hamburger and they don't taste like ours. The food is mediocre at best and if you're not in good shape you'll die walking up the hills everyday!! All that said I loved Panama and would go back in a minute just to a different resort. If you go make sure you take the little bus into the village, the shopping is great and very inexpensive.

 Great staff - poor food.

The service at this resort was without exception very good. The beach and pools were good, although we could have done without the ATVs on the beach. The food however was poor. Buffet food was always lukewarm or cold, The a la carte restaurants were mediocre at best. The seafood was awful.

 Royal DeCameron, Panama City

The food here is great!!! Very wide selection of food, lots of fresh fruit, fish, chicken, rice, pasta, burgers, etc. The resort was very clean, maid service was wonderful. The furnishings in the resort are a bit dated, but fine other than that. Pay particular attention to your travel rep regarding tours - they will not give you information on ones that are not very good - so don't book these ones. The ones that they recommend are fantastic - you certainly get your money's worth. There are a lot of stairs, or steep hills to climb - so you must be in shape. Lots of pools - deep, shallow, etc. We just loved this resort and the country and would definitely return there. The staff was super and most accommodating.

 Late Jan 2012

The average of the ratings by other posters here seem accurate in retrospect. It's worth at least 3-3/4 stars IMHO. The place is big alright so there's lots of walking. The trek from beach and restaurant level up to my top floor room at road level (nice ocean view) was equal to walking up a 6 story building. But the paths are all in excellent condition and the stairs and railings are built to North American size and shape standards; so unless you're severely handicapped, it's no biggie. The shuttle vans run irregularly during the day if you want a lift. You may have to call for one at night. You will more likely use them if you're in one of the villas scattered around the golf course across the road from the rest of the resort.

Here's a hint for first timers. The first two digits of the room number are the building number, which goes up to around 50. So check the site map that comes with your checkin package to help find your building and room on arrival. I wasn't too alert arriving late after a long day's travel and my building was at the opposite end, a good kilometer from lobby 1.

Language was never an issue. If clear communication becomes important, an english-speaker will always be available. Latinos are modest and still observe the pleasantries, so for goodness sakes don't act like an American. Check a guide book for some hints before going.

I found the food better than expected with some exceptions. There was always plenty to choose from in the buffet restaurants and a few choices were excellent. Each night is a theme night and the themes are outlined by the desk of the a la carte reservation taker in each lobby. I only tried 3 of the 8 a la carte restaurants where I experienced the least interesting food. The fish place served me a whole fish-on-a-stick thing that was way overcooked and dried out. The grill place was equally bad. Knowing that tropical beef isn't worth the effort, I tried the pork but it was just as thinly cut, dried out and flavourless. It sure isn't BBQ like we know it. There was a whole roast suckling pig at the buffet one night and it was first rate, as was the lobster casserole.

The grounds are lush and there's an army of groundskeepers always at work. The beach is wide, kept groomed and there's lots of chairs available. Besides the songbirds, the only wildlife I saw was a peacock and a few iguanas. Almost no insects outside (I saw workers fogging once) and no bugs at all in the room. The room was a reasonable size, comfortable, and kept very clean. It had a walk-in shower (no tub) and washcloths are not provided. As for quiet, well, it overlooked the disco. From 11 p.m. until 2 or 3 they bang out techno-bop for the party-hardies. I found the volume loud even 100 metres away. I reached for one of the welcome candies but found just in time that they were foam earplugs. The air conditioner worked well - you can set the temperature and fan speed to your liking.

If you just want a beach, you might want to balance the added cost against the distance (5-1/4 hr flight from Toronto) plus the 2 hour minimum bus transfer in the hope of 35 deg C sunny but humid weather. There is also lots to see and do off the resort but it's a long way to anywhere. For simple local flavour, try the collectivo to Penonome on Friday (market day). Going back was a bummer. Not just the return to winter but the Air Transat flight to Toronto doesn't get in till 2 a.m. the next day. So you lose a lot of time at both ends. A planned new airport near the resort will trim a good 2 hours off the travel but not until 2014.
