The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We were there for our daughter's wedding and it was fantastic.

This hotel, while dated in its decor, is absolutely lovely. It is big, yet has a very comfortable, homey feel. I think the staff contribute to that a lot, they seem to genuinely want to please you and make you smile. Everything is very clean (how does such an open hotel keep the bugs out?? they do a great job!) and they pay attention to the little details. The food is really tasty and a good variety. Maria's restaurant was our favourite, ate there 3 nights and enjoyed every single thing we had. The beach is a little rocky but if you walk down the beach a ways it gets less rocky. There's only one pool area so getting a chair by the pool means you have to be up early (we were usually up and down there between 7-7:30 and even then we seemed to snatch the last 2 available). But there's loads of chairs on the beach. The location of the hotel is great, as 5th Avenue is a short walk away with lots of shops and beautiful restaurants and cafes (including 2 Starbucks! Although Ah Cacao became our favourite cafe). The only thing really lacking at this hotel is nighttime entertainment. If you're into clubbing, Coco Bongo is the place to go (expensive though, especially on Fri/Sat), but if you're not there's not much really to do at the resort. The entertainment/shows the hotel puts on are really lame, sorry to say for the performers. For us, we weren't really looking for night life too much so we were happy with our trip; there's great variety of excursions you can take to explore Cancun and the Riviera (Chichen Itza is fascinating). Oh, and the wifi is included and works well outside but in the room the signal is weak and it cuts out more often than not.

This hotel was beyond expectations. The staff bent over backwards to see that all your needs were met. They were very friendly and never stopped working and cleaning. The food was excellent and there was a very good variety, including theme nights (Mexican, Caribbean, etc) We upgraded to a jr. suite before we left , and the rooms were large with a sitting area, balcony, and jumbo shower area. I would return tomorrow !!

We originally booked at the Gran Porto Real however on arrival they upgraded us to the sister hotel "The Royal" as they didn't have our rooms available. The Royal was absolutely breath taking, certainly more than our expectations.

My wife and I stayed at this hotel. From the moment we got there, we were amazed. Everyone is very very friendly, you get all the 5 star restaurants a la carte dining included in your package! The service is wonderful and I loved that there are no line-ups for anything. Servers, workers, hotel staff running around trying to make you happy every minute. I would go back to this hotel any time! :)

The staff were great rooms wonderful the food was great no complaints the beach would have to be rated a 3 star.
entertaimnent ok but was not a major factor for us we travelled with another couple and they would have the same reviews. overall great holiday.

Very efficient and friendly staff. Had the usual pool activities, nightly shows were good. There was constuction going on that was very noisy (jackhammers, etc.) and was very disruptive the first 2 days. Of course nobody warns you about that. We accepted that repairs are necessary from time to time, and the hotel isn't going to close down just for that, but it would have been nice to be warned when we checked in. An apology in advance would have sufficed. But when you don't know what's going on and how long it will last, you can't help but wonder why they can't be open about it.
We were on our honeymoon and took advantage of the free upgrade package - we ended up with a lovely oceanview suite, It's worth the extra $$$. The main pool was lovely, be aware it doesn't have steps in, just ladders, plus two shallow areas where you can just slide off into the deeper (4'8") parts.

Our best ever vacation, and we have been on many in the last few years. Our room 255 had a fantastic view with two Balconies.

Resort was wonderful

After careful research, we decided to book this particular hotel. We were surpreised by their friendlyness (unbelievable!!!) and also how sportless clean is the entire resort! There are more people cleaning the actual dirty, believe me. We walked on our bare foot a few times and we did NOT feel sand at all. This place is spotless clean, even to the pickiest person, like myself. The bathrooms (room & public ones in the resort) are also spotless clean. Teh variety of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner is also incredible. There is something for every taste, believe me. You can find for ex. for breakfast, from fruits, yogursts, juices, milk to pancakes, fritatas, omeletes, bacons, to sausages, potatos, etc etc.. If someone complains about this, they don't know any better and just want to be negative persons. This hotel DOES have a huge variety, that I just could not believe when I saw it on the first day. Plus all the restaurants they have, you just pick one and go eat. Enjoy. Employees like Teresa, Ciro, Mora, Ismael, Richard, Mar, Freddie, Dulce, Diana, Karina, and many many others are poeple that you would not find anywhere else. Every single employee there made us feel like we were at home and therefore made everything to please us, in every possible way. I am yet to find a resort of this quality, with this extremely qualified staff and being on the best possible location of Playa Del Carmen! Even the Security is just impressive, they are everywhere, but at the same time, very discrete, always walking, wathinc over us, making sure our "home" is as safe and enjoyable as it can be. We walked on the streets at night, early evening with our soon and it was a pleasure to see how friendly the locals are. This hotel is nothing but the best. If you want your home away from home, you sure most go to Porto!
I cannot wait to go back there! My second home now! As they waited for us with hugs and kisses!

Although the food is not the best, we love the location, the service, staff and the rooms and will return for those reasons.

never take a standard room. We had one with no balcony and no WINDOW!!!! We upgraded to junior suite. Beautiful but of course extra money. So cheaper to take junior suite when booking through agency. Cost more once there.

We were a bit disappointed given this is a 4 1/2 star... the standard room was far below our expecation. the toilet leaked and we needed a towel on the floor the entire trip. the way the hotel was set up, was more like a motel which caused more evening noise. We did like the italian restarant and the maid service was very good. For a almost 5 star hotel, we were surprised there was only 2 restaruants but liked that you didnt need to book a reservation. there was not night atmosphere.. the entertainment was poor and left us disappointed. We made one room request which was a king size bed.. we didnt get it and were disappointed.

Perfect location! Exceptionally clean. Great food and drinks, staff always near by waiting to assist with anything. The kids club was the best. We couldn't keep our daughter out of it!! She loved all the girls working in there.

we visited this hotel in april and loved it so much when we needed a relaxing holiday we came back to the Gran Porto. We love it, the feel is really relaxed and feels like mexico, and the people who work there are amaxing. Pablo on the beach is so great and is an excellent spainsh teacher he is so hard working in that heat and sun everyday. Also Avila and MArcus at the pool bar are fantastic they really went the extra mile to make us expertly made margaritas con roches, as well as letting us sample mezcal. And Elias and Jorges the chef at MArias are great. On our last night they came up with a chef's tasting menu and it was delicious. The whole vacation was fabulous. My only complaint is that the hotel has to update the exchange rate from Canadian dolalrs to pesos!!!!

I liked everything about this resort.If I was going back to Playa del Carmen I would stay there again for sure.

I stayed in an ocean view Junior Suite at the Grand Porto Real with my boyfriend for 7 nights in January. We absolutely loved our room! It was very spacious and clean. The only downfall was that the “oceanview” was a sliver of ocean if you leaned out on the balcony. We had 2 other couples stay in a standard room and it was nice but I would definitely recommend upgrading to the Junior Suite!

The hotel in general was very clean and was lovely. I loved the grand hallways with pillars and chandeliers everywhere. The pools were nice and the sun chairs had excellent waiter service on the beach! The beach was clean and the water clear but there were a lot of rocks to watch out for when walking in the water. We also went parasailing one day and it was a lot of fun, only $100 for 2 people.

In regards to food, the Buffet was up and down. The breakfast buffet was amazing! Always tons of variety to choose from. The lunch buffet was the same every day and was basic. The dinner Buffet was sometimes the same and the odd day would change with a feature food or theme. The best place to eat was the Italian restaurant! It was GREAT! From the appetizers, to main courses, to desserts, everything tasted amazing! I could have ate there everyday! The room service was also really good and ran until 10 at night! The bars were all very generous but were sometimes slow.

The only thing that we did not like was that our room had $50 credit to use. (so did the other couples) It was available to use for a massage, a romantic diner…lots of options and we definitely would have used it but never knew about it until we were checking out!

If you want to do an excursion, we highly recommend The Xplor adventure park. It was awesome. We went zip lining, ATVing, rafting and swimming in caves. The lunch was included and it was a excellent buffet. It also included the transportation there and back and lockers. You can book this at the hotel with your travel representative.

Overall our trip was amazing! We are already planning to go back next year!

nous avons passé de très belles vacances, le personnel est extrèmement gentil. la nourriture est excellente . la proximité de la 5e avenue cest vraiment cool. la seule déception cest la plage mais nous allions nous baigner à lhotel royal qui est à 2 minute de marche.

This is our 4th or 5th time at this hotel and we thoroughly enjoy ourselves. We had a nice room, it was just the location of the room we didn't like but they wanted to move us 2 days after we checked in and I had already unpacked and so I declined their offer, which shows they can be accomodating. All staff are very friendly and courteous. The spa services were great, my husband & I had a couples massage and the girls who did it for us were both great.
Food selction is great and they have improved since we first started to go there. Their other 2 restaurants, Mexican & Italian are also very good food & service.
The beach is okay as the water has a lot of rocks and the waves are a little too much. We go Nov 28th - Dec 5th so it may be less rough at other times during the year.
All in all our experience at the Gran Porto Real was and has always been great.

The Service was Fabulous at the Gran Porto Real, but unless you are prepared to upgrade, your room will be an old, badly in need of renovating, room. We did upgrade and thought we got a good deal, until I read on Tripadvisor that a couple had upgraded to the much nicer Royal Resort and Spa across the street for about the same price. The Real resort was very small and very quiet, so if you are looking for some night life, you'll need to stay elsewhere. I do really have to mention, though, that the Service from ALL the staff was above and beyond, and we were really pampered. As long as you want to spend extra (we paid $40.00 per night more) to get a better room, then this is a fabulous place to stay. My ratings are for the upgraded room. You don't want to read my rating for the 3rd floor room that we had to stay in for one night....
