Still a great place but more room for improvement.

Our seventh trip here. Fantastic food. Gorgeous property. The staff are friendly and helpful. But, there are some things that bother us. see "weak points".

 Enjoyed our stay

We stayed in 2003 and were happy to return in 2012. The staff make the holiday. They are outstanding. The quality of food is superb and the grounds are beautiful. The only downside was the "incentive" sale-basically a timeshare concept in disguise. Our concierge presented it well with terrific incentives so we were quite happy to give up an hour and a half of our time. Our presenter was very nice and pleasant. We enjoyed seeing the resort extras and were certainly tempted by areas we could not afford. The unfortunate side was that when it was clear we were not in a financial position to "buy in" the "finalize the sale guy", Charlie I believe his name was, told us that "He didn't understand people like us" and when I said that our presenter was very good but that it just didn't fit us he said "That's the kiss of death" and dismissed both the presenter and my husband and myself. I was so rattled by his abruptness that when the presenter led us downstairs I headed straight for the exit. Our presenter Jorge, who had been incredibly personable to that point and had actually tempted us, sarcastically said "Don't forget your gift. That's what you did it for isn't it?" and turned and walked away. It left a bitter taste. We liked this resort so much we were already talking about going back a third time, this Christmas, but this made us so uncomfortable that we are considering other places now. Bottom line, I suggest you only do their special presentation if you have a thick skin. Otherwise, skip it and enjoy a spectacular resort.

 No beach

Mixed. We went there to get married and that was handled very well and went off without a hitch. It was a beautiful experience.
The hotel is also beautiful but too big and too long. A mile long. The hotel uses golf carts to taxi people, staff and stuff around the hotel. They zoom along all the pedestrian paths and I spent the entire week jumping out of the way. It was annoying and occasionally scary wondering if I was going to get hit by one of these carts. Also they leave a black residue on the pathways so if you walk barefoot your feet are soon black. There is no beach to speak of. The hotel advertises a beach but you cannot walk on it because of all the buried rocks just underneath the sand and you can't go in the water because of the exposed reef and rocks. I go to the tropics to swim in the ocean not look at it and wish I could.
Last but not least, everything is an upsell here. You book a dinner and they want to upsell you for something better. The same with massages and any of the activities. They also try to sell you some sort of time share option. Money, money, money! So much for all inclusive. The food at the restaurants was excellent but always a wait to get in. Overall I would never go back. I felt better treated at a 3 star in Cuba than at this resort. I guess I wasn't rich enough for them.

 El Dorado Rooyale

The hotel is very nice. Be aware that when you pay for ocean front you will most likely get put in garden view and have to fight toget ocean view. This has happened to us two years in a row. Other than getting the right room it is a great resort with excellent food.

 Great experience all the way!!!!

Wow! This hotel was excellent. We loved it so much, we will go back for sure. Food was excellent and the service there is beyond expectations. The rooms are simple but really nice and clean. At this time of the year, temperature wasn't a question. It was HOT!

 Awesomeness in Paradise

A great fun week spent with friendly attentive staff who made it so easy to lay back and enjoy. I read an earlier review by someone saying if you weren't in a Casita that you had to wait in line for restaurants... not true. All restaurants are first come first serve for everyone and at any rate the waits were minimal if at all. The only area that needs some work is the shuttle service... The grounds are large and walking everywhere gets tiring but waiting for shuttles can take up to 40 minutes of valuable time. Overall however an awesome experience and I've been there before and we will be going back.

 Can't wait to go back!

Everything about this was resort was beyond expectations. It should be a 5 star The only thing anyone could complain about is that the beach is a bit rocky and there are sandbags out to create a breakwall and to form a natural reef...I persoanlly didn'd mind and feel that it didn't take anything away from the resort. There are sandy places to swim and the water is crystal clear.

 Prepare to be Spoiled

The food was excellent! Top quality with lots of selection... 5 star all the way (highly recommend the the Italian restaurant... Meh, they're all good).

The rooms were great with everything you'd expect at a highly rated resort.
In-suite jacuzzi, brand new A/C units, monster size bed... Ahhhhh... :)
Our cleaner was prompt and reliable when resetting our room, the mini-fridge was always full and the turn-down service later in the evening was a nice touch too.

The staff were very friendly and did a great job keeping the morale up (probably not to difficult a task given the copious number of bars on the resort).

Probably not the best spot to go if youre looking to party. Majority of the crowd were a little older so it made for a more conservative atmosphere (at least it did for my girlfriend and I... maybe were just lame :)

Couldnt really swim at the beach. The water was pretty rough the whole week so the marshal had to set up the red flag. The artificial breakwaters and rocky bottom didnt really make for ideal swimming anyways (this is really the only complaint I had).

All-in-all, I highly recommend EDR, I had a great time.

This was an amazing resort. The food was excellent. The staff were amazing. The K-Team recreation staff did an amazing job at all the activities. The pool activities were so much fun. Great at getting people involved. The nightly entertainment was awesome. So was the music after the shows. They did a great job with the Anniversary package we purchased after we arrived. Not one complaint to be told... Would definately go back & highly recommend this resort!!!!

The service and food is outstanding, the beach through no fault of the hotel is worse than 5 years ago when we were there, can't go in the ocean, but we new that going there, Cuba has the best beaches that we have seen.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

We stayed in a swim-up jacuzzi suite. The resort is huge, spread out, with lucious vegitation and great restaurants (the good). The rooms are dated, and the A/C in the rooms is really loud making it difficult to sleep. The beach is also not useable - can't swim there (the bad). The concierge is mostly preoccupied with trying to get you to attend a timeshare/vacation club presentation, and we were then held hostage for six hours, not allowed to leave for lunch, with the worst sales pressures and tactics we ever experienced (the ugly). This hotel chain is in the business of selling their timeshare club, which I really didn't appreciate on such an expensive vacation and left a bad taste in my mouth all week.

 Perfect!?

It was that good, you had to ask yourself if it was perfect. The food, dining experience, and service were all fantastic. It was quiet and romantic. Never over crowded, never had to wait in line for a beach bed or a meal. We stayed on the Casita side and enjoyed the upgrade - much more private. The upgrade among other things mean't you could make meal reservations but we only saw a line up for supper once. The room was very nice and the outdoor shower was fun. We had a great afternoon at the Spa. The 24 hour room service also came in handy a couple times. A short drive from Cancun airport. While there don't go for the WiFi service and not your place if you want to ocean swim.
