 Great Place

The place is beautiful, clean with friendly and helpful staff. I would recommend it as well as go back again myself. Particularly great for families with young children.

 P and T from Brampton

I chose GBP Akumal becasue I thought it would be less crowded,I was so wrong. All three GBP shared the same beachfront, there was over 3,000 people searching for a spot on the beach. Also finding a ride to get from one resort to another for your dinner reservation was nuts. Loved the people but I would try another resort in Mexcio.

 Mayan 2012

This was our 2nd trip to the Gran Bahia in the Mayan. First to the Akumal resort. It once again meet all of our expectations. The staff is friendly, helpful and the service they provide is exceptional. We hope to return in the future with our family, as the resort is perfect for children to explore. The beach is clean, with many areas that are free from the waves and safe for swimming and snorkeling. The reef off shore offers good snorkeling without leaving the resort. The food in the buffet was always plentiful and fresh with many choices. We only attended one alacart the Don Pablo, which once again was fabulous as it was in 2009. It was difficult to fit in all of our 8 reservations as even on our first day there was little room in the first week. However we were never disappointed with the Buffet. We didnt much like the Dole Vita for Breakfast and lunch for the Royal Golden upgrade, we found that the selection was much better and could actually sit by a window at the buffet, which we couldnot do as all the tables were for 4 persons and the manager didn't want 2 people sitting in those spots. The Royal Golden upgrade is worth every extra penny, our room was fabulous and my emailsent 2 weeks before our departure was considered with our room requests. We had an awesome ocean front room. The cleaning staff Raquel was awesome and left our room spotless, with plenty of towels, soaps, and clean sheets daily and it was always done in a timely manner. The mini fridge was stocked daily with the required drinks...however our request for just certain beverages was not granted as they seemed to have a strict list and the same amount was replenished everyday so we never were without water or beverages in our room. The Snack bar was great, and open 24hours. The selection varied from day to day...and the ice cream machine was out of order often. Internet was easily accessed and computers were accesable int he Royal Golden Section, however wirless internet access in our room would have been excellent. The TV channels were not great. Overall, like I said in the begining, this resort has much to offer to couples, or families...and WE WILL be back again.

 Lovely resort but remote

This resort is very well maintained and on the whole we had a good experience, with the exception of the difficulty in booking meals at the "a la carte" restaurants and some poorly trained servers. It was very difficult to make the bookings in the first place. We learned later that you can do it in advance. Avoid the Mikado - reception very rude, even though we were 10 minutes early by our confirmation slip, they refused to seat us as they said their schedule said we were 20 minutes late. Now whose fault is that? The resort, but no accomodation or apology by staff. The resort is roughly 90 minutes plus from Cancun airport, so the pick up is 5 hours before departure. Makes for a long day travelling. Internet access is available free in the lobbies, but was offered for a charge in the rooms. However, although we paid, there was no WIFI connection available in the rooom. No refund was offered. Cost $36 for the use of safe in the room. Apart from the inconsistent service in the restaurants, some good, some bad, the resort staff were friendly and helpful. The buffets in each of the three main centres were very high quality food, so the a la carte restaurants were not a real bonus, especially with the booking problems.

 Fantastic Trip

The hotel was spacious with plenty of choices for dining, tanning and water activities. Enjoyed long walks along the shoreline, and water sports throughout the day. Staff are friendly. Maid service is adequate during the stay, but seem to forget once in a while about turning the bed down or restocking the fridge in the room. Great two weeks.

 What we expected

We have been to this area before but not this resort. We did a lot of research and I would have to say that the reveiews I had read were pretty bang on. The size of the resort and the amount of people you encounter can be a little overwhelming. Overall we enjoyed our stay here.

 Great time!

really enjoyed this place! Service, food, rooms, grounds all nice. Beach was a bit rockey and a la cartes were so so. House wine was kinda yucky. Buffet made up for it though. As well as 24 hr snack bar. Snorkelling on beach pretty good. Big but great shopping at Hacienda and trams were great. For trips I recommend collectivo to Tulum ruins and beach and eat there and boat trips with Yukatanexporer.com The snorkelling was amazing!

 GREAT FOOD

This was our 1st trip to Mexico's east coast. The 2 hr trip through customs (many planes arrived at the same time!) was followed by a quick luggage pick up/ got some porters to help take golf clubs and suitcases to the bus. 90 min later we were at the resort and taken to our lobby by the resort shuttle. Check in was efficient and bags arrived at the room fast. Room was clean and Isabel kept it that way(she was AWESOME and made great towel designs)Bed hard, fixed it by bringing our own foam wrapped around our golf clubs. Had a 3rd floor ocean view room with a SCREEN DOOR on the balcony so we could leave it open at night and enjoy the breeze and sound of the ocean. VERY quiet efficient A/C.Hot water only an issue between 9 and midnight when it would have been nice to take a more than luke warm jacuzzi bath as it was chilly while we were there. RESORT is huge (can hold 6000!) but transport well provided by trolly's. FOOD GREAT at buffets and the 6 restaurants we tried. Reservations a must-make them when you arrive. GOLF- tough course. Lots of water and sand. Hard to get onto for 1 pm twilight rate of 55/pp. 85/pp before 1pm. Par 3 is nice and was 35/pp. Strict dress code of shirt with collar (sleeveless ok) NO denim. TIP when you see the snack cart get what you want you probably wont see it again! Staff friendly and efficient. BEACH - rocky coral sand. Beach and pool could use more palapas and chairs. SWIMMING tough as the coral is high and the ocean floor is rocky in most places. TAKE water shoes. TIP-take a taxi($14 US each way)to Akumal Bay (Dive shop) and enjoy a calm bay and swim with the fish, turtles and maybe even a stingray! Safe public beach-may be busy on weekends. If you dont want to do expensive excursions take a taxi to Tulum ruins. Very safe and taxi driver may offer to wait for you($24 US ea way). 57 pesos/pp to get in 500 pesos for a guided tour. You can swim in the GORGEOUS bay so take towel etc if you want to. There are tough mosquitos in the evening so beware. LOTS of Iguanas everywhere. We saw quite a few people in wheel chairs so there must have been good access for them. There are hobby cats you can take out but the ocean is often too rough. Topless sunbathing prohibited at all pools and Rare at the beach. NOTE- prices on items in the resort are in $US. We were told the maids earn about $6/day so tip them well!

 Average Resort

This hotel is your average 4* All-Inclusive. You will get what is expected, but not much more. I found the staff friendly, but the guests were a little bit to be desired. There is not a sence of "friendly-ness" from Hotel guests which I find unusual.

 Holiday to Gran Bahia Principe

We had been at this resort the year before, but stayed at Tulum.Which was just as good. Tulum has the bigger bar of all. We love the resort there are people from all over the world coming here like England, Germany etc.Very nice people to talk to.You can ride to all four resorts on their shuttle for free from early morning to early the next day. Food is at the best you can eat.Our second time this round we never went to the a-la carts, we only used the buffet as you can never get tired of trying out everything as its the best. The entertainment is the best 7 days a week. The only thing we were surprized about is that its the same both years.Everything you have wanted to do is there.Prices with tours are a little steep, but you only live once and if you can afford it go for it.Overall the Riviera Maya holiday is by far so the nicest weve been to, not saying others arent, we are going to try them also .We met a couple on the bus who said its their 10th time so you know its good when you hear that

 Overall just OK vacation

We travel every year and this was our worst vacation ever. We paid extra to be in Royal Golden section but there was nothing extra about it (sorry we've got bathrobes in the room). It was an average resort (at New Years Gala Dinner i've seen a cook picking up a shrimp from the floor an putting back to the rest and having a good laugh about it). The buffet food was just OK and a la carte restaurants very good except the seafood one(bad service). The beach was fine. We hated the idea to pay for the safe. It's not the money but the principle. If you can not guarantee the safety you might at least provide the safe. We've stayed in better resorts and they did provide the safe for free. The last day was a joke. Bell person refusing to watch the luggage and having a cold shower after a long day at the beach. I guess our vacation was over so they didn't have to care anymore. Sad, Sad.......

Nice Resort but not the beach

We were very impressed with the resort itself. Very beautiful and extremely clean. However the beach was so much less than I had wished for. The sand was crushed shells so rough the instep of my foot hurt after walking on it. Also there were very few stretches of beach to swim in, with rocks on the bottom and I was unable to swim past my hips.

I was also hoping for more areas where I could feel at home going topless, but there were so few women going topless.

It's what it says it is

Stayed for 2 weeks. Had been there for 2 weeks before at the Coba. Good food at the buffets and
restaurants. Beach is very good and sheltered
so safe for kids. Air conditioning is only in a couple restaurants and barely, if ever, works in the rooms. The staff, like most places we have been to in 24 years of visiting Mexico, are great. Yes, I would go back but so many places I haven't been to yet.
Starting to show its age a bit but still well maintained. Beds are hard. Don't jump into bed, you could break something.
Great evening shows. Usual scramble for beach/pool chairs but only for the late risers. With so many people on WiFi today, they do need to enhance their free lobby broadband,,,so-o-o-o s-l-o-w
Bottom line,,,go. You'll like it.
