 Feb/Mar 2012

We had a two week stay at this hotel. I was at first disappointed with the room. The furniture and decor were a bit rough, however, the bed was very comfortable. The room was clean, as was the whole hotel. The beach, poolside bathrooms were spotless even with frequent use. Staff were friendly and helpful. The lower buffet had mainly Mexican food that did not appeal to us. After a few days, we discovered the upper buffet which had much better food. The entertainment programs were some of the best that we have seen. There was a bit of a gap as the entertainment ended at 2145hr and the disco (in the Palapa Bar) did not start until 2300hr. The beach and water was great. Because of the location in a sheltered bay, the waves were small. Snorkeling and swimming right there in front of the hotel. Overall, we had a great holiday there.

 Nice place

2 week stay was good except too many mexican families with lots of children which made for a very crowded pool. The buffet was very busy and they are not the most polite people when food is involved. We were thankful that they were not there the whole 2 weeks. Staff was great, food good, weather perfect.

 Tesoro Manzanillo

Hotel was very nice but the swimming pool was probably a bit too small especially around the Mexican holiday. The food could be improved a litte but it was OK.

 Paradise and the power plant

loved the hotel, staff very friendly
location perfect in a lovely secluded cove
room was great, roomy with a nice balcony
food was ok, but not great, and at times, really bad
expect lots of noise from kids, entertainment, discos, nightly shows
sky was often dulled by coal fired power plant pollution, usually smugging up the sunset

3 star hotel with a 5 star view

Going into it, we knew it was a 3.5 star hotel, and it was mostly as expected. There were 3 couples travelling together and all of our rooms were clean and restocked with fresh towels, etc daily. The food was mostly okay: much of the buffet was to be avoided, but the taco station at lunch time was AMAZING! The omelet station at breakfast was also really good. There was a lot of confusion over the a la carte restaurants as it is italian food most nights, but mexican food on the weekends (we were not aware of this arrangement when booking). The waiter in La Palapa snack bar Fernando is always fun and welcoming, so spend time there when possible. On the weekend there were no where near enough beach chairs for the guests, and it seems that a lot of other guests have the habit of reserving beach chairs all day without ever using them. Also, watch your towels carefully and don't leave them unattended as there is a $50 charge for missing beach towels. On several occasions other guests accused our group of taking their towels (which of course we had not). There are a few tours available in the area; we highly recommend the zip-lining and turtle and mangrove tour. Overall, it was as expected and the 3 to 3.5 star rating is appropriate, but the view of the bay is breath-taking; truly a wonderful way to start and end a day.

 Great location, super view

Staff, location, view was great, comfortable, and safe place to bring my family . Food was warm on buffet never hot. Room safe had no door, hotel lied when asked to move said it was full when clearly was 1/2 empty, then wanted money at they end of week for safe usage, funny! A la cart good, pool area needs some work,

 What you make of it

Just returned from a week at Tesoro manzanillo (Jan 19-26).
I'd like to say that I'm not a picky traveller. If I book a 3.5 star I don't expect a 5. Tesoro is definitely no more than a 3.5 and this is the first time ever I don't think I'd return to a resort. That said, it's what you make of it and we did have an enjoyable week.

Rooms: Simple and clean. Beds were comfortable but pillows resemble sandbags. Cleaning staff was excellent and always refilled our fridge with water. Bathroom was also simple and clean. Sewer smell when you turn the taps on. We solved this problem by placing a wet towel over the floor drain. We were in 411 which I really liked. It's not in the tower so you have a seperate (much faster!!) elevator. We also took the stairs most times from the pool deck. View was nice. Noisy at night from the beach and disco but doubt there was a "quiet" area of this hotel.

Food: Overall the food was pretty good but became very repetative. The Mexican al la carte was excellent. Only real complaint was that from about 5-7 you can't get a meal. Buffet didn't open until 7 and snack bar closed at 5.

Pool & Beach: Both a disappointment. The beach sand was fine. The water was dark and murky. If you got past your knees you'd have no ideal what was lurking. It did seem to start clearing up a bit by the end of our week. Not sure what the deal was with that.
The pool was cleaned daily and chemicals added (watched them do it) but it needs a good scrub. The edges along the pool are covered in green slimy algae. Yuck.

Staff: Overall they did an excellent job. The bell boys were especially helpful. Wait staff was good. Compared to other places I found the bartenders boring. They did their job but didn't seem thrilled to be there. We didn't find any staff expecting a tip at all but they were of course grateful for them.

The weekends were busy, mainly mexican families. We enjoyed hanging out with them though and we didn't feel discriminated against so had no problem with it. Met quite a few people who were there on their second, third and even forth visit to the Tesoro. That definitely surprised me and I have a feeling they've never been anywhere else.

 Great for the price

We got a great price and had a great time enjoying the sun. The room was run down but clean. The food was good, but got boring, just like any mass produced food. We went to outside restaurants for a few dinners and enjoyed some great Mexican steak.

 A really nice week

The buffet was always good, our room was good, the service was very good. The beach and swimming were nice, the water is quite flat in this little bay (no big waves). Snorkeling from the beach was pretty OK when the Red Tide cleared up. It was easy and inexpensive to move around Manzanillo by bus or cab. The hotel is an impressive building but showing it's age. The brilliant white pictures of the building are accurate and current, the pictures of the rooms are nicer looking that ours was but we were happy with the room. King size bed was very comfortable. The pool DJ is a little noisy for us but it isn't a real issue if you choose the beach for sun bathing. There is a high rise condo being built nearby but the construction site and bit of noise really don't affect you at the resort. Sunday is a neat day because the locals use the beach club on one side of the bay and the place comes alive; usually the beach is very quite and not many people.
This is a nice 3 to 3.5 star place. If you are happy with this level of resort it is a good choice at a great price. If what you really want is a four or five star experience you need to spend more.

 Above expected quality

Had the most wonderful accomodation. Bedroom living room, spacious, king size bed. Everything well-maintained and well-serviced. Better than any including 5-star in Mexico.

Dining experience at Adobe was excellent. I like the fact that for a few extra dollars, one pound lobster tail is available. Service again excellent, as was at-table prepared spanish coffee.

Only issue that interfered with the best possible was the incessant microphone work for pool activites from 11 am to 5 PM. There is no place to escape.

 I want to go back

We had a great time at the Tesoro. We have been there before ,so we knew what to expect. Our bed was very comfortable the food was tasty .the shows were entertaining the drinks hit the spot. Our flight was late we arrived at the hotel 9:00 and did not get into our room until 3:51 where our bags had to be left unattended in a meeting room i didnt care for that so much But didn't let that spoil it for us.But they should of had a couple of rooms for peaple to freshen up even if it was just to take a shower. All in All we had a great time.

 Nice location

It started off a bit rocky. We had no safe door in our room when we arrived. Were told to put our stuff in our friends safe. After many calls that night we finally got a safe door put on. Rooms were always kept clean. Our room had a sewer smell but once I covered the drain with a towel it was ok. The food was okay and you could always find something to eat but its the first Mexican resort I have been to that didn't have an abundance of fresh salsa every day. Overall I would say it was a bit lower than a 3.5 star as we have been to other resorts rating the same and the food was much better with more variety.

The entertainers really do there best to entertain you and extremely friendly.

The waiters are wonderful and really take care of you. The front desk staff are also very helpful. We had an incident that we required assistance and the staff at the front desk were very caring and showed compassion.

The bartenders are great, always served you quickly whether you tipped or not. Overall its not a bad place to be but the elevators are very, very slow. The internet access is not the best, they should give you a password and pay for so many minutes instead of having to go to the front desk every time and pay and if you don't use all the minutes you lose them.

 Beautiful Views

Despite a few issues with our room, overall, my boyfriend and I had a good time at this resort.

We were there for a week just after Christmas. There were many Mexican visitors and locals which was a nice change from the usual hammered-all-day Western crowd. The hotel also put on a nice show for New Year's including some breathtaking fireworks over the bay.

Not a lot to see in the area but it's safe. We took the bus and taxis to markets and to check out local fare. El Fogon and El Vaquero were nice restaurants in town. For a huge public beach close by, ask staff.

If you're not concerned with absolute perfection, it's a good time.

 Highly Recommend Tesoro!

Before we chose Tesoro we read many reviews, on balance favorable, and saw many pictures, all lovely. The reality far exceeded the favorable expectation. It was all good! Food good, room good, bed good, service good, activities good, beach good, staff eager to please. It was marvellous! The two a la carte meals we had, mexican and Italian were good; the sunset and snorkelling excursions were wonderful.
Negatives? The pool was very busy, a lot of children, and the people with the microphones were very loud; and the nightly entertainment did not meet the standard of other resorts in which we've stayed.

 Beyond Expectations

The Tesoro Manzanillo was a very Nice, clean, friendly, lovely place to stay. It was situated in a nice good sized bay where the under tow/current of the ocean wasn't as bad as what you often hear of the Pacific Ocean. We were able to go swimming in the ocean no problem...it still pulled you a bit...and if you did loose your balance, your bathing suit may have acquired a 'bit' of sand. But it was a fun time. The hotel is really nice, the rooms were clean, fairly plain but more importantly clean. The oceanview was spectacular from your very private balcony! The mountainous terrain was simply gorgeous!...The sunset over the mountains...beautiful! We had all the hot water you could ask for...the toilet worked...the air cond. worked...our fridge was stocked with water and soft drinks...and the bed was the most comfortable that I have ever experienced on a resort....king size pillow top mattress!! All of the employees at the resort were very friendly and quite fluent in English. The buffet was wonderful. Now, you have to really like Buffets to enjoy the food. If you don't like Buffets, then you'll pout and say it was horrible. This one was just fine and had a variety of food. If you don't like the meat...don't eat it...there was pasta...salads....vegetables...nachos and salsa....desserts....it was just fine!!! They offer several excursions, we took in the Sunset tour on the explorer double decker catamaran, and we went on the Zipline tour...Both were fabulous.!! I would definitely go to Manzanilla, Mexico again...and I would definitely go to the Tesoro again...I would also like to spend time at the other resorts in Manzanillo too, to see what they're like! The only warning I have is....when you're at the beach, or at the pool...There is absolutely no reason to take your cell phone or laptop....your camera, yes...but keep an eye on it, as you would anywhere. On the weekends the resorts get a little overcrowded (best time to go on your excursion)..because alot of local Mexican families come to stay at the beach for the weekend. There were a couple of cases of people having some electronics stolen, because they were left unattended. Other than that, the only other 'complaint' would be the smog...the burning of the oil that lingers high in the air. This is needed for their electricity.....It makes your view out your balcony a little hazy. Overall, I loved my vacation!!!
