 Barcelo Huatulco

The food at the buffet restaurants and the al a carte specialty restaurants was cold and there was no choices other than Mexican even at the Spanish and seafood a la carte specialty restaurants. The lunch and breakfast buffets had a reasonably good selection but were usually cold.

Barcelo Hualtulco - had a great time

The Barcelo is a great family hotel, a nice resort that is well cared for. It may show it's age a bit but I could not complain about it. The room we had was larger than most places we had stayed at all over Mexico in all inclusives. My 10 year old daughter met many friends and enjoyed the resort even more than we did. No night swimming allowed in pools was a huge disappointment.

21 Great years of Visting Huatulco

When I first stayed here it was a Sheraton. I have since stayed here as Barcelo several times, and they have kept it well maintained and is great value for the money.
Clean, neat, and great service, and as always the beauty and great weather of the Huatulco area!

Good value for the price but beds are like concrete. Staff was excellent, resort very clean and well maintained.Food was decent but not a huge variety. Beach was kept clean but very dangerous undertow in water.

 Hhhhm

We enjoyed the location but my husband got very sick while we were there. We found out it was salmonella upon our return to Canada (he was sick for 3 weeks). The hotel was reasonably nice, except I would have preferred to have a king bed (they were not able to get us a room with a king size).

All and all a good vacation.

The Barcelo is a mediocre hotel. We stayed at the Barcelo in Los Cabos and this Huatulco Barcelo is nothing like it. It is dated but as many have mentioned, very clean. On our reservation to iTravel 2000 we had specifically requested a king bed. We got two double beds and they could not accomodate our request. Out of four couples we went with, only one couple had a king bed. The food was not great with minimal selection. All but one of us ended up with tummy upset. The staff was friendly and our chamber maid was the sweetest (Celia), leaving beautiful flower art everyday. The drinks were so/so and if you plan on drinking brand names you had better invest in the upgrade to the Premium Club. They do not divert whatsoever. No Bailey's unless you have the Premium bracelet. I have never experienced this at any resort I have every stayed at. Very strange. The beach was fantastic but there is an under tow so you have to be careful when there is a red flag is out. Pools were great, maybe a little too warm, but at 37 degrees I am sure it is difficult to keep the temps down. It has a designated kids pool which is also very nice. No free WI-FI and very expensive to purchase $55 for the week. Overall we enjoyed our vacation but will not likely return to this hotel.

 Great Hotel

Great hotel, could use some updating. Cheap no name alcohol. No Wi-Fi unless you pay, come on get with the times. I would not recommend using Itravel2000 to book trip. No communication after booking trip. we were never sent a link to our e-tickets. Purchased Sunwing's Elite Plus, Was not honored at check-in because Itravel200- did not enter it. Tried to use price drop protection, got one line response "denied" asked why not and did not receive a response while another group in our party's claim was excepted.

 Holiday in paradise!

It was a perfect holiday. Staff at hotel, without exception, were extremely friendly and helpful. We looked forward to the buffets... lots of delicious options, and especially like the variety of Mexican food available. Loved the beach and the snorkeling. When the water was clear, the variety of sea creatures in the bay is amazing!

 Good First Impression

As you read the following, you may get the impression that – after the fact – we have a lot of nitpicking complaints about our stay at the Barcelo Huatulco Beach resort. Nothing could be further from the truth. We had a very enjoyable and relaxing vacation. All of the hotel staff and agency representatives did everything within their power to make sure our stay was as good as it could be. We very much appreciated their efforts; and we want to thank them all.

More than anything, we have included some of the following comments in the hope that they may actually get communicated to the vacation package representatives and the Barcelo Huatulco Beach resort. I am sure that they are always looking for feedback that may assist them in making things even better – if possible – for future clientele. Anyhow, please take this disclaimer into account as you review our comments below.

So, without further ado:

The location of the Barcelo resort itself is very nice – tucked into one of the many scenic ocean bays as it is. As well, it is only about a twenty minute bus ride from the airport – which is comparatively small; and quick to get processed through.

The weather was fantastic the entire week we were there. It was sunny, hot and quite calm every day during our stay. Now, from what I heard, that is the “norm” for this area at this time of year (i.e. January and February).

As is typical of Mexican based, all-inclusive resorts, all of the resort staff that we encountered were hard working, friendly, energetic and very customer focused.

As many before me have said, the food was good; but not great. No real complaints here however. We always found lots of food to our liking. We particularly liked the majority of the pork and beef dishes that were served. We also experienced two of the three available ala carte restaurants – the Mexican and Spanish. Again, they were OK.

The last couple of days we were there coincided with Mexico's Constitution Day national holiday. As such, the resort was considerably busier during that time. That is, many Mexican families took the opportunity to visit the Barcelo Beach resort during their holiday break. We saw that as a good thing. It says something about the quality of a resort when the Mexican tourists themselves view it as a worthwhile destination.

For some reason, the special room “requests” (e.g. King Size bed) that I had put forward at the time of my booking our vacation package never actually got communicated to the Barcelo Premium Hotel itself. That was not the case for most others that we talked to. So, I am not sure what happened – because my requests did show up on the “reservation confirmation” e-Mail that I received about one minute after booking the package? But hey, it was no big deal to us. We knew going in that any “special requests” that one makes beforehand cannot be guaranteed by the vacation package representatives, or the Barcelo Beach resort. The room we ended up with was perfectly fine. For starters, it was in a good, convenient location within the hotel complex itself. Secondly, it was clean, plenty spacious enough for the two of us; and everything functioned well (i.e. sinks, toilet, shower etc.). What else can one ask for?

We thought more of the true, “customer-interfacing” staff would have spoken and understood English a bit better than they did – given the general demographic of their clientele. Again, “No”, it wasn’t a big problem. Sometimes, you just had to accept the fact that you may not get exactly what you asked for when making particular requests in the restaurants or drink dispensary locations.

Further to the prior point, the nightly entertainment shows were mostly dealt with in Spanish – when again, the majority of the audience most nights was not Spanish speaking. However, that fact did not detract from our enjoyment of the actual shows themselves. The nightly entertainment was consistently very good; and we always felt it was well worth our while. The shows were well choreographed. The regular cast of dancers, and the occasionally presented singers, were all highly skilled, energetic and professional.

They could have probably used another (i.e. second) bartender in the beach side restaurant (and adjoining swim up bar) most days; and in the lobby bar in the evenings. Although I am a non-drinker, my observation was that the bartenders were quite liberal with their allotment of alcohol in the mixed drinks. I just thought that some of you would be happy to hear this.

There was a definite delineation between the “young kiddies” pool and the adult pools.

There were always ample “lounge chairs” to be found - either surrounding the pools, or on the beach.

There were lots of activities that one could participate in as well. Kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, jet-skiing, water aerobics, volleyball, golf, fishing, boogey boarding, various tours of the region etc. The tours, golf, fishing and motorized sports were extra cost items.

There were a lot of “vendors” on the beach encouraging you to purchase their varied assortment of blankets, baubles, beads and bracelets. They weren’t pushy however. A simple “No Thanks” was usually all that it took to send them on their way.

Final Reminders:

After checking in, don’t forget to ask at the front desk to receive a lock and key for the safety deposit box in your room.

Don’t forget to tip your waiters, bartenders and maids. Again, they work hard to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

There is a nice little shopping mall directly across the street from the front entrance to the hotel. It is quite suitable if you are looking for souvenirs to take home with you.

The beach fronting the resort was quite nice; and the ocean refreshing to swim in. Just be a bit careful with respect to the “churning” water action, and undertow, right near the shoreline itself. It can be a bit overwhelming at times – especially later in the afternoon.

In the end, a vacation is what you make it folks. Don’t sweat the small stuff. You can complain about anything and everything if you choose to; or you can just accept things as they are. All I know is that we would not hesitate for one minute to return to the Huatulco Barcelo Beach Resort in the future. That is probably the only review that matters. Enough said.

 A great place!

We got a good deal on this trip so we weren't disappointed with our somewhat dated rooms as the cleanliness, service and friendliness more than made up for it. We loved the town of La Crucecita, tons of shopping, great restaurants, night life, and sooo friendly. Our only complaint about the area was that we couldn't find a really good boogie boarding beach. My husband is fair skinned and with the intense heat during the day, we needed someplace that rented umbrellas and we never found that. We ended up having to stay at the hotel beach which wasn't the best as it has quite an undertow. Still enjoyable though, you make do with what you have. Overall we felt very safe to do anything and everything off the resort and had a great, very hot, trip. We were sad to come home.

Barcelo Huatulco built in the 1980's

This hotel was the old Sheraton Huatulco Resort built in the 1980's. This hotel has nice layout if you not into anything modern or fancy since the decor has never been renovated. All the room have a sliding glass door and deck. The TV in are room was an older tube style that worked fine. The beach is nice long sandy beach with venders that will sell you anything or book you boat tours. I'd go out front and cross the street to Huatulco Activities to book your tours. Talk to Carlos at the end of the hall by the spa and salon. He has internet access too. The staff are the friendly people I have met at a resort so tip them well!!! I liked the food, the fish was my favorite. The weather was nice the 2 weeks we stayed.

 Barcelo Premium in Huatulco

The hotel is older, but nice enough - it was kept very clean, and the service was good. Buffet was fairly varied each day; weren't impressed that much with the al a carte restaurants - food was OK but all our meals were not served hot.

 Excellent hotel

Flew with sunwing, flight was very good, check in a bit spotty, arrived early and departed early which was a plus. Check in at hotel was very efficient. The hotel is probably one of the cleanest and best maintained I have stayed at. The restaurants buffet and a la carte were excellent, would definately return. Would definately recommend to friends.

 Great spot

This was our first time in Huatulco and we were very happy with our choice of hotel/resort. We had requested a room with a king size bed on a low floor so that we could use the stairs instead of the elevator but were given a room with 2 queen beds and on the 5th floor. In the end, we were very happy with the location. We had a nice balcony with a view of the ocean.

We have been to quite a few all inclusive resorts and must say that this was one of our favourites. The food at the buffet was very good with lots of variety...the only complaint would be that the hot dishes could have been hotter, but that seems to be the case at almost all buffets. When we first arrived, the Dona Rosa buffet restaurant was open for breakfast & dinner. Lunch was a buffet at the "pool side" restaurant. By the end of the week both buffets were open for both meals, because of the increase in the number of guests.

The one thing that impressed us the most was the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff. They were all wonderful and truly seemed to enjoy their jobs....& they didn't seem to expect tips! Tip them though, because they do deserve it!!!

The hotel and grounds were extremely well kept & clean.....no garbage laying around. The area has a "green" designation and everyone is very proud and seems to do their part. We even saw a beach vendor pick up & dispose of a styrofoam cup that some "lazy" tourist had left near their beach lounge.

The area, including La Crucecita, a town about 10 minutes by cab, is very safe and fun to visit.

All in all we would highly recommend the Barcelo Huatulco and hope to return to it ourselves.

 Rest and Relaxation

The Barcelo is a nice hotel although it is showing its age. Room was clean and bar fridge was replenished if needed. The bathroom was showing signs of needing upgrading but wasn't an issue.

The food was fine (not the quality we have had at other resorts)but one could always find something of interest. I do believe there was a difference between the beach restaurant and the main buffet as to selection and quality, with the main buffet being better.

The beach can be difficult to walk due to the slant to the ocean and surf can be rough. Water does drop off quickly.

If you want beautiful consistent weather everyday I would highly recommend Huatulco.
