 Enjoyable Resort

I enjoyed the resort & staff were very helpful everywhere. The Lobby bar is getting old & in need of some TLC & updating. a very popular spot. A strong sewer gas smell at times, I assume from the floor drains. Most of the food was good and lots to chose from and the specialty restaurants were good I found.

 Would return

Overall good hotel. Steakhouse dinner was awesome. The food was good. Lots of great excursions. I would recommend all three that I took. XPLOR, Coba, and dolphin discovery.

 Family holiday . . .

It took us 45 minutes to check in to the hotel at the front desk (and we were the first family off the Sunwing bus). Reception waited until everyone was lined up at the front desk, and then proceeded to check everyone into the hotel all at once. The process took 45 minutes. It was NOT a great welcome to this hotel - very bad first impression. It was also not made clear to us that we needed a reservation for dinner that evening. When we arrived at the buffet (normally no reservation needed), we were turned away. (Since it was Christmas Eve, they required every guest to make reservations for dinner.) We ended up eating out by the pool at the snack bar. It wasn't a great first evening at the hotel.

Both my husband and 4-year-old daughter cut their feet on the pool tiles the next day - gushing blood everywhere. Not safe. The pool tiles need to be replaced around the edge of the pool.

Aside from those 3 things, our stay was fairly pleasant. The food at the buffet was consistently great with a large variety. The servers at the buffet were fantastic! If you tip, expect to receive exemplary service. (We tipped $2-$5 per meal.)

The room was nice and clean. Housekeeping usually didn't clean the room until late afternoon unfortunately. And the location of our room (just off the lobby) wasn't soundproof. We heard people talking in the hallway continually throughout our stay (even in the middle of the night). That wasn't great.

The playground off the Kids Club was great for our daughter to play on. We didn't feel comfortable leaving her at the Kids Club without us. The employees at the Kids Club didn't appear to have training on how to deal with young children. But to give them credit, they did try.

The loungers on the beach in front of the hotel were full by 9:00 am every morning. People laid towels on the loungers and then left them there all day. We usually found decent spots by the pool. If you get out there by 9:00, you usually have many pool chairs to choose from.

The hotel is not close to many amenities. It is about a 5 minute walk to the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Would recommend taking the ferry over to the island for the day - make sure you get on the blue and yellow ferry. There are other companies who will try and meet you by the street and direct you to their boat. It's the difference between a 15 minute or a 45 minute ride to the island, and a clean and modern boat versus a old, smelly boat. Same price for both.

You will have to take a taxi to go shopping. There is a flea market about 5-10 minute taxi ride away. And there is a mall (just ask them to take you to Planet Hollywood) with a vast array of shops about a 15 minute cab ride away.

We went to the Dolphin Discovery on Isla Mujeres. It is only $79 per adult if you find your own transportation there, and our 4-year-old was free. The tour guide at the hotel tried to sell us a package that was $129 per person. Total rip off! You can rent a golf cart for $50 per day on the island. Well worth it! Very easy to find your way around. The shopping is good on the island too. It's pretty much the same stuff you'll find at the flea market on the mainland.

All in all, it was a good vacation. Everyone we traveled with enjoyed themselves. We would travel to Cancun again, but would like to stay closer to the shopping area - either closer to the mall or the flea market. We would stay at Riu Caribe again only if we got a really good deal. The front desk reception, the pool tiles, and the room soundproofing were deal breakers for us - but a couple of those could easily be fixed. It's a good hotel for families.

 Hotel Riu Caribe

The staff were excellent. We wanted to change rooms because of being next to an ice machine and they upgraded us to a Jr. Suite. No problem. Ninety five per cent of the staff were pleasant and willing to do whatever they could for you. The only drawback was the size of the beach. Way too small for the size of the hotel.

 Great vacation!

Had a great time, nice room, good service and good food. The beach was gorgeous and we had no problem most times getting loungers where we wanted. The hotel put on a Christmas Gala dinner and champagne cocktail reception for the guests on Christmas Eve and made it really festive and nice.

 Nice stay in general

at the beginning I didn't like it but later it was nice. It's not 5 star for sure but people are nice and its always depends on people you meet there. Food was good. Beach is nice but windy and the sea is not quiet. It's far from downtown you are always the last to drop off and the first to be picked up. I would prefer Riu Cancun or Riu Palace

 Construction

Great hotel though if you have to listen to a saw from 7 am to 8 pm it is not very good. More construction next year.

 Off Season Travel...

Off season travel is much cheaper than regular season and for good reason! Rained upon arrival and hotel had buckets everywhere as the hotel is not waterproof and leaked from a 25' roof! Made for neat indoor natural waterfall..haha! 1st room we had on 5th was a nice corner ocean view room with no adjoining door (BONUS!) no ice next door! but 2 roaches instead! quickly switched to a "better 7th floor room" with adjoining room, great view! and another bug...they "gassed and super cleaned" next day as a token of gratitude since half the hotel was under renos and they didnt have another room to upgrade us to..oh and still had to pay $15 in local calls at the end..food was delicious! we ate at albatros most days for breakfast/lunch/dinner as the kitchen was better I suppose and preffered the lay-out/selection. All other food locations were pretty good as well don't get me wrong! Be careful in Gaviotas by the pool..the salad and delicious sweets in the middle of the restaurant are electrified to keep birds away but there is no signs indicating so make sure you only touch the plastic! Some 10 year old girl got shocked standing next to me as did I! Drinks were sugar,water/alcohol, and flavouring..delicious but headaches are sure to follow! All staff were curtious and friendly and we tipped as needed. Made a few friends here and there at the bars and added a few people to facebook via the free wifi in lobby which I found was a very nice compliment but atleast let us pay to have it in our rooms as there was only the sports bar/computer room haha for other internet option. Overall I would say this is probably a rather nice place when it's full of people and staff alike in the busy season but as for october/november travel I wouldn't reccomend it.

 Below Expectations. -Very Disappointed.

Very disappointed in the service from the Hotel. We went specifically to a Riu as we have stayed at them in Dominican.Celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary so wanted it to be a special trip. Our phone in the room was not working. Complained 1st night there as we have too daughters at home so wanted communication with them. Not until we complained for the 3rd time did they come and try to fix it. Never did work even then.Asked to use a phone to call home and was told that there would be an extra charge. I said I wanted it to be collect and he said call from our room which was impossible to do when phone not working. Finally let us make a call with no charge. Our door to our room was not working properly so had to fight with it until about the 4th day in when they finally fixed it.Requested a bottle of Champagne to our room on the 2nd night there as a surprise for our Anniversary, tipped the front desk and he said it would be delivered. Was not delivered then or the next day even after speaking with the same front desk person who I had tipped. Said I would pay for it and finally after the 3rd time requesting was delivered to our room, but only after ruining surprise to my husband. Ants on our deck and last 2 days in our bathroon, small but annoying. Beaches were beautiful and food decent but would never go back to that hotel.Internet service was horrible and with no help from worker after struggling with it.Safe was a pain in the butt to try and use with key not working properly, had to constantly struggle with it.

Worst Resort I have ever stayed in.

This was the worst experience I have ever had at a hotel.
Below are my issues:

Hotel Room:
-TV didn't work, every 2 minues had loud buzzing noise.
-Room Phone did not work
-there was large water heather or something literally inside our room, heard dripping water ALL day and night
-on third day, construction commenced 3 doors down, loud banging starting at 9am
-buffet food was awful
-beach was absolutely disgusting..very dirty.
-a la carte restaurants were so awful we had appetizers and left.
-reception was always way too busy for how many people were there. always waited minimum of 10 minutes to speak to someone
-we were sold a "beach club" outing at night. $45 USD to sit on a bus for 45 minutes, and get in a club. they packed literally 60 people into one cabana, the club was an absolute nightmare, you could barely move around, the pool had cigarette butts in it, and I was told later there were offers of drugs in the bathrooms.
-there was only wifi in the lobby...that's not really up to standards these days.

 Great Stay

Noise level at night is a bit loud, due to how the sound echos in the structure. Pool was great. Food was okay. Staff was great. Entertainment staff at the pool kept everyone busy.

 Beautiful spot

The location is beautiful, large pool with kids area, hotel is on a good beach for swimming, lots of shade on the beach and lots of chairs. The hotel is clean, beds are hard, bathroom needs some updating. The staff are very friendly. The only thing we did not like was the food, but we figured we are spoilt in Canada with good food.

 Good times

me and my girlfriend travelled as couple to this resort. the beaches were very nice and the crew/staff at the resort were helpful and polite. the only thing bad about the resort itself is that there werent enough lounge chairs at the pool for everyone. but you can secure one if you get up early. one excrsion we went on was the "partyu hopper" coco bongo was not very fun, wayyy to many people and impossible to get drinks, would not recommend it. but the other 2 bars were awesome (slide in senor frogs)all in all a good experiance for the price!!!!

 Another memorable vacation

We returned to the Riu Caribe again this year and were not disappointed. GREAT HOTEL, GREAT STAFF, GREAT ATMOSPHERE. Can't say enough about the friendly and helpful people who work hard to make visitors comfortable and happy. In our view, people who complain about the Riu Caribe expect things exactly like at home - that is the totally wrong approach. We go to Mexico because it is different - and WARM. Again this year the place was spotless, the food was great and the staff went out of their way to help. We will return.

 Fabulous resort

This was our first experience at an all enclusive. We are seasoned cruisers! We arrived at this resort at midnight and the room we expected was not available however the very friendly and accomadating staff moved us 2 days later to a room with a spectacular view! Our room was kept impeccably clean, each day we were welcomed with a different creature(made of a towel/facecloth)on our bed, then on our last night our bed was decorated with flower pettals and a beautiful swan, it made us feel like we were on our homeymoom again(37yrs married). The food was good in all resturants, however if one wants to eat in the steak house you need to make reservations by 7am that day, another option would be to go without resrevations in hopes that someone will not show and you can take their place. The wine was not what we expected, there was no choice!(very different from cruising) The pool and beach were everythng we expected, beautiful clear green water with lots of activites if you choose,(sailing, snorkling, kyaking, beach volleyball, socor, water aerobics etc.)There were lots of chairs available, no matter what time you arrived at the pool or beach (unlike the cruise ship where you would have to get up early to find a chair around the pool). The entertainment was great however the outdoor theatre was too small and in need of updating. The only negative things I have to say would be,the beds are very hard, there is no night club on site and the main bar closes down at 11:30pm, way to early for our group when on vacation. There are night clubs around if you want to take a bus but these are mainly for the 20-30 something crowd not the >50 crowd with lots of energy!! All in all we had a great 14 days at Riu Caribe and would highly recommend it to all!!!

 Bad Experience

It was a very nice resort, plenty of activities, friendly staff and great food. Unfortunately both my daughter and I picked up a parasite from food we ate at the resort. We found out after returning from our vacation that a number of the wells in Cancun are contaminated due to the low water table. I could not eat or drink anything for a week and my daughter still is not able to eat or drink anything after 11 days. She is awaiting results of a culture to have her doctor determine how to best treat the parasite. It would have been beneficial to know before we arrived in Cancun of this situation as we are now aware that we could have received a prescription before we left to avoid this.

 Riu Caribe holiday

For the most part we were very happy with the accommodations and resort in it itself. The service was good and the people were friendly. They had lots of entertainment available. We were upset by one item. When we asked about shopping our sunwing representatives told us they had an arranged shopping trip, gave us a coupon, put us in a taxi and sent us on our way. We ended up in a jewlery store where they sale people were trying their hardest to get us to by something. We apologized to the people and asked were we could find a mall. A gentleman at the store guided us to a very nice mall. We felt we were set up but the sunwing people at the hotel, not once did they tell us we were going toa jewlery store.
