 Won't Go Back!

Not a 5 star, maybe a 2 or 2 1/2 star.
Not worth the Royal Golden upgrade...did not receive anything worth the extra money. Don't purchase it.

The pool was GREEN for the first 3 days, it took them until the morning we left for it to be clear.

The ocean is very weedy and is not clean and clear...the beach was good except for the sand fleas.

The food was not even up to a 3 star standard and was definitely not great.

The rooms were nice, but we had some issues with the cleaning staff, our bottle of Bailey's that we purchased at Duty Free and kept in the mini fridge was drank by someone.....gross. We also changed rooms within 24 hours of getting there and left and expensive bottle of cologne in the bathroom by mistake, and when we returned to the room after 20 minutes it was gone, but yet the room was not cleaned at that point. We asked for it back immediately but never got it back. They never bothered to respond to any of our conversations about this also. The hotel told the Transat rep that they had returned it to us but they never did.

The Royal Golden concierge area either took a long time to get back to you about an issue or they never called you back and when you called them back, they would not answer. Their premium drinks are only available in their reception area...not very convenient when you are at the beach or pool.

NO hot water, not even a trickle, taps completely empty for 3 days.....gives a new meaning of a cold shower!

We would not recommend it and we would definitely not go back there.

Great entertainment staff and people working in the restaurants, they were friendly and enjoyable. The ground were beautiful. Theses are the only positives for the resort.

Compliments to Canjet for great flights, wonderful service and good food!

 Fun in the sun

For the most part everything was great the beach the weather. The staff are friendly, however only a few speak English which makes getting information and over communicating difficult at times... But none the less the information gets across. I hate reading about the food being bad but truthfully it wasn't that good. Local dishe were done really well but attempts at different nationalities were a miss! Not much variety and kinda comparable to Cuban resort food sad to say. The a la cart restaurants te service and the food were really bad and not worth the wait in line to book them (Italian & fish) we didn't go to the steak one

 OK resort

Nice lobby and friendly staff. Beatiful garden.
Lots of guests smoke in lobby so you will have no where to get fresh air in lobby or theatre even if you are in non smoking area. They have table which are non-smoking and smoking but so close. If you are allegic to smoking, don't go.

Beach is way below expectation as water is same color as Lake Ontario.

Room is clean and spacious. A/C is very loud and shower is not working properly. Called staff for not working TV and it took a while to make it work. So we didn't bother to report A/C and shower head repair. It seems this resort don't maintain their hardware very well.

 Nice Hotel - good trip

Beautiful hotel and grounds, very well kept. Good food at buffet and the Gourmet restaurant. The other two restaurants are not worth the booking.

Very nice beach - clean and very large, tons of chairs and huts - shade or sun. Nice, large pool, again with lots of lounges.

Nightly entertainment was typical resort fare - not worth going out of your way for.

Fresh bath towels twice a day in the room. Bar fridge was restocked daily. Large rooms. All issues were fixed immediately (patio door handle came off).

Never an issue to book a sailboat.

 Great time Great people

Grounds were beautiful, food was ok lots of choices so you never went hungry. The entertainment staff was alot of fun. Great hotel if your looking for a relaxing time. The place is not as bad as some of the reviews make it out to be and we never saw or heard of anyone getting sick from the food, just to much alcohol...

 Nice vacation

I had booked the vacation when all the reviews were excellent. After booking I made the mistake off checking trip advisor again only to see that everybody was getting sick after going to GRAN BAHIA PRINCIPE LA ROMANA. Our stay was great, the food was great, beach was clean, hotel rooms and grounds were great, all staff was great, weather was great and so was the beach. I encountered one problem which seems to be a re-occuring problem and that was we used the safe and I had placed my $300 necklace in the safe only to find when I went to get it out in the evening to wear it to dinner it was gone. Leave your valuables at home!!

 Gran Bahia Principe LaRomana

Dining area-omelet chef definitely needs some new pans-ones that don't stick. Toasters need adjusting as takes forever to toast.
Our maid was asked to remember to lock patio door, she did not. Easy entry into rooms.
The MCs of any events need to use the English language more often. It is hard to participate when you do not know what they are talking about. We visited when the resort was Santana Beach. We will return. Thank you for a great time.

 Hotel was nice

My husband took me for my 50th birthday. My whole experience was great except the food was horrable. The hotel was beautiful, the staff was great and very helpfull. The beach was fantastic and so was the pool. Our room was amazing i love the little decorations that was on the beds when we can back in. check in and out was hastle free and quick. Now back to the food the a la carts were horrable, the food was very poor quality. we went back to the buffet 2 night after the a la carts. My husband and i throw up about 4 times and we met other couples there that had the exact same ecperience. Its not somewhere i would ever go again.

 Our Dominican Vacation

Rooms: Very clean and modern. Maid service was always great.

Grounds: Beautiful and well maintained

Food: Average. Nothing to rant about, but we never went hungry. On one night after dinner myself and a number of other people from our group were ill, but it only lasted a short time.

Resturant and bar service: Always prompt and friendly. Waiters and bartenders remembered guests well.

Activities: good mix of daily activities on the resort, and free water sports.

Entertainment: Wonderful live singing and dancing every night in the lobby. Nightly theatrical shows put together very well- we enjoyed multiple shows. Not much nightlife- everything shut down at 11pm. Lights in lobby dimmed, and many turned off.

Beach: beautiful sand. ocean water was quite murky. Large chunks of coral and rock in water sometimes made swimming/walking in water uncomfortable. Large beach area with ample lounge chairs and shady tiki huts

Pools: Water was quite cold. Sand in the pools. sometimes dirty. Closed by 6pm which was inconvenient. Had advertised hot tubs- there were none when we got there.

Shopping: A few little shops on the resort which offered trinkets and classic souvenier type things. Found some cute souveniers to take home.

Optional excursions: They seemed to offer quite a few options for additional charge day trips and experiences. We did not choose to go on any as many seemed quite expensive for what was offered.

Front desk/Management: Very bad experiences. Staff could barely speak English. An emergency call to front desk for security made the situation even more stressful due to the language barriers. Management did not care about guest complaints and well being.

Our room was almost broken into while we were inside- 2 men yelling and kicking our door trying to get in. They were doing the same to our neighbour's door and put a huge crack in it, almost the whole length of the door- also broke the mechanism which alows the key to open the door.

Clothes got ruined by bleach on a pool lounge chair which had not been cleaned properly.

Mouse in friend's room.

Balcony chair broke while friend was sitting on it. It cut her leg, ripped her pants, she fell to the ground and hit her head. When we brough the chair, in 2 pieces, to front desk, their response was, "you won't be charged for the chair." We were also told a new chair would be brought to the room, which never happened.

Another member of our group has a life-threatening allergy to citrus fruit. She showed the management, the chef, our travel rep her medic allert bracelet, epi-pen, and doctors note because she had been told they would make sure she did not come in contact with anything that would cause her to go into anaphylactic shock. Even after talking to them on multiple occasions, they did nothing.

We saw a large amount of broken glass in lobby one night. We advised staff of it on 2 seperate occasions. After 11pm they dim and turn off many of the lights in the lobby. As we were leaving the area, one member of our group went sliding on the glass which had still not been cleaned, and we could barely see because it was so dark. He cut his foot very badly.

When we brought all these issues to the management's attention they did nothing to remedy the situation or fix the problems. Definitely did not make it feel like a 5 star resort!

 Horrible Experience

The people did not speak english, they were not helpful when my group experienced emergencies (like calling the front desk to send security when someone was breaking into their room - and being put on hold and being transfered 5 different times - no security was sent). Not owning up to responsibilities when staff was told by 8 different people that there was broken glass on the floor - not cleaning it up and then having someone step in it and cutting their foot. Not acknowledging a life threatening allergy - even though it was explained before the trip was booked and the hotel agreed to accommodate it; then being informed of it multiple times during the trip and not accommodating for it. Chairs were breaking and people falling and getting hurt - but not offering to compensate. Everyone in my group had something happen to them - and the manager just said "oh well". Did not offer compensation, did not offer to move rooms for those who were broken into, did not offer medical help to those injured, but informed them that it would cost extra. Overall, this was the worst experience I have ever had. This is NOT a 5 star. You are treated like crap.

 Beautiful Resort and Beach

This was a beautiful location in the middle of no where. Gorgeous beach and fine sand, plenty of space to soak up the sun. Beautifully manicured gardens. A paradise! Very clean rooms and grounds and very nice people who seem to appreciate the jobs they have with the resort. But if you are choosing this resort because of all inclusives, the booze is nasty Normandy brand (local)is only offered unless you pay $4-5 per drink for premium brands. We didn't drink very much until we went to town to buy our own bottles. Food is cold and terrible. Even worse at a la carte restaurants so we didn't use our 4 free a la carte bookings. There is a microwave at buffet so heat your food up before returning to your table. Everyone we met and hung out with at the resort had at least 1 day of food poisoning so we are glad we pre-bought Immodium, Gravel etc. Not sure if they understand the concept of Cross contamination in Dominican. It wasn't pleasant for some of us who got sick on the day the resort had no running water at our villas for toilets, showers or sinks for 8 hours. Nasty. We had a Gecco in our room and after 1.5 hours waiting, 3 staff finally arrived to 'take care of it'. We hoped they would arrive with a net to catch and release but instead used my flip flop to kill it. Our friends in next villa had a mouse and rat in their room. Staff arrived quicker as it was 3:30am. The spa was amazing and affordable, a great way to end our trip. Weather was amazing and got plenty of sun. Too bad there wasn't pool side waiters coming around offering to bring us another drink, as we had to walk all the way around the big pool they have to get to the bar or wade through the pool. But buying a floating seat with beverage holder for $12 USD was my best purchase there. Nice clothes available in their gift shop. As the resort is 30minutes from anything so a taxi is required to go anywhere. Very isolated.

 Not Cancun, but still good

It was not as good as Cancun Gran Bahia but still we enjoyed. So in comparison with Cancun it is 4stars.
So overall was good, but you should go before Mexico, not like us after.

Two Weeks @ Bahia La Romana

I got Ill two nights after arriving.Vomiting and diareha for twenty four hours.I failed to report this until Friday as I thought I was an isolated case however after talking to folks and seeing people coming down with the same thing I reported my case to the hotel and the Sunquest rep.As I was here for another week I requested a change of hotels but was told by rep it would cost $1000.I would not recommend this hotel until they get the sickness problem resolved.

 3 1/2 Star Vacation

Overall the resorts was okay, not great but not terrible. The food was just the same not great but not terrible. The staff was friendly and helpful but there was a language barrier at times not being a native Spanish speaker. GET A ROOM ON THE SECOND FLOOR. We had a cockroach (the size of my finger) come in under the door on the first floor and then demanded to get a room on the second floor - which we got a day later

 La Romana - Nov 2011

The grounds on this hotel are beaytiful. The beds however are very hard and I ended up sleeping on the sofa. The food I would rate at a 6 as most of the time it was luke warm and not hot. The beach had many sand flies and people were bitten with big marks all over them. If you plan to go to the beach bring bug spray and anti-itch cream. The water is not cler but still nice to swim in. English is limited by the staff but you can still manage to get by. One thing I have to say is that they keep the place very clean. The room is nice but there is not a big difference in the regular package and the upgraded one. I would not pay extra to upgrade. I would put this hotel as a 4 star not a five. My husband and I vacation twice a year so this is not our first experience. I have a vast experience with differnt palces and hotel chains to rate this hotel. It is a nice place but put your expectations for a 4 star and you won't be dissapointed if you are looking for a 5 star this is not the place to go. One other comment this hotel will not cash traveller cheques. Only bring cash..they prefer US money or credit cards money but will accept Canadian at the front desk.

Great Resort - Ocean can see bottom

We liked this resort for what we paid. $399 plus tax - As we usually go to a 4 star it did have a bit of class compaired to the 4 stars. But we like the clear water which this resort didn't have. It was great for couples in their late 40's 50's and 60's ect..not for singles for sure - but is also good for families as it so safe and clean.

 Terrific Resort

We loved this resort the service was excellent the food was also very good - the resort is on it's own and they are going to expand it - the only downfall was the water at the beach it's not clear therefore looks dirty - they should remove the sand bags around the bay and maybe it would make it cleaner.

 Decent experience, average ocean

Very decent hotel, not a 5 star for sure, but on the upper side. A la carte is waste of time, you wait for average food. Buffet very good, but expect to be made to wait for the better fresh meat and fish from the grill. Some signs of brilliance, eg cold soups or prosciutto. The beach is fine, but lacks more shaded areas, despite the plentitude of palm trees, which are trimmed a lot. The sand in the water is in bad shape, the bay is murky and muddy all the time. For Carribean, the ocean is not what yiu would expect in terms of clarity and cleanlines unles you walk to either tip of the bay. There lies the natural beach, instead of the hotel manmade over a former river delta.
Internet has 2 computers for a huge resort, expect a looong wait. For WiFi, you have to pay, and only available in lobby and outside, not in any rooms.

Room was amazing, balcony facing the ocean. Grounds are immaculate. The staff all work very hard. Food was good, good choices. Don;t believe the bad reviews, we're going back next year. Always a great vacation at Bahia Principe resorts. We've been to BP puerto Plata, BP Punta Cana and BP Akumal Riviera Maya. All were great. This chain is aamazing.

Air Canada Offered Punta Cana Instead

We appreciated the opportunity given to change resorts the day before departure due to the illnesses at La Romana. We went to Gran Bahie Principe Punta Cana where we had been a few years ago when it was new. The resort is well maintained and beautiful. The food and offerings where a little more lax but still very enjoyable. Evening entertainment was good. Pools and beach both very nice.
