 Melia Las Antillas

nice facility although a little rundown
met someone who stayed there 6 years ago and they said it was much better then.Food was about as expected, staff were pleasant and service was decent. Not what I would call a 4.5 star but this was our first trip to Cuba

 Melia Las Antillas...Excellent

We just recently returned from Varadero where we stayed at the Melia Las Antillas. What a wonderful experience! We were so impressed with the Junior Suite, the staff, the food and of course, the beach.
The rooms were large, airy, clean and comfortable, (we do not mind a slightly harder bed). The cleaning staff did a great job. Some people complain about the towels not being changed however if you read the information sheet you receive when you arrive it clearly states that if you want your towels changed, place them in the bath tub. We do not change our towels daily at home, so I do not expect them changed daily on an island where they have environmental concerns with water and chemicals in the water. When we wanted new towels, we placed them in the tub and they were replaced.
The staff were attentive and friendly and after the second day we were greeted at the buffet and lunch bar as if we were old friends.
The food was plentiful and well prepared. Always a huge selection of fresh fruit and vegetables and their breads are the best!!! The ala cartes were delicious and food and wine was promtly served. We only waited in line to book the ala cartes for maybe 10 minutes, no big deal, but the people who booked the ala cartes did make you feel like maybe you were inconviencing them a bit.
The coffee bar served the best coffee and drinks. The staff there always took your orders and then asked you to take a seat and would deliver your drinks whether you were in the bar or on the patio. It was lovely. They knew our preferences after the second day as well.
The beach was great, however, they could use a few more sun huts. Many people would set their towels out first thing in the morning and so there was not always a shady place to sit. There were only two days with a yellow flag and even then it was just fun to go in and jump the waves. I really appreciated the two sides of the beach, the activities side and the quiet side. We sat on the quiet side and the beach staff never bothered us to join in the games. Nice. There were vendors on the beach but they were very respectful and would walk past closer to the water only approaching you if you indicated that you were interested in purchasing or seeing their products.
We took the double decker bus into town for shopping and then out to the point. It was nice to see the whole strip. We just felt so safe again in Cuba. It is nice to be able to hop on and off the bus all day for only $5.00/person.
We found many Russians and Europeans at this resort as well as many from Eastern Canada but only 2 other couples from Saskatchewan. The Russians were quite loud and rude but I guess it is just a different culture.
The public washrooms near the bar area were well maintained, sometimes short of hand towels but always clean and supplied with soap, and TP.
The nightly entertainment was excellent. It did not start until 10.00 pm but only lasted for about an hour.
The resort is not too big not too small just the right size. We were in building #66 and were no more than 5 minutes to the buffet, the beach and less than 3 minutes to the pool bar.
We will rave about this spot to anyone going to Cuba and encourage them to spend a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday here.

 Melia Las Antillas March 2012

It is with great regret that I am writing a negative review for a Cuban Hotel because I love Cuba and support their main source of economy, which is tourism, by travelling several times a year to this enchanted island. I have been travelling to Cuba since the age of 14 for the past 13 years.

I visited Melia Las Antillas with my fiance for a week from March 4th to March 11th, 2012 to celebrate my birthday. Prior to this resort we had fallen in love with Breezes Varadero because of its 5 star quality in service and hospitality. We travelled to Breezes Varadero 5 times and got our 6th time free as this is a promotion that this resort offers. The management is superb, and the resort is even older than Las Antillas. This time we wanted to try something new and I thought that Melia Las Antillas will be a safe choice because I was already familiar with the resort when it was a Beaches brand 5 years ago (a lot better then than now) as well as the fact that it was a Sol Melia Resort, a brand I usually trust and value. I must say that this resort was completely disappointing! I have 13 years worth of Cuban hotel comparisons and this one is at the bottom of my list.

Here is a breakdown: we arrived to the hotel and were greeted by an arrogant and extremely cocky receptionist named Hector. While he flirts and smiles to travelling single ladies, there is no equity in the way he treats other clients. Despite it being my birthday (which always upgraded my room or location at every Cuban hotel I celebrated my birthday at including overnight stays in Havana) we were give the most terrible room available with the view of a partial wall covering half the horizon and a roof, an entrance from a noisy street where the buffet loads and unloads food as well as stores garbage (disgusting smell), a leaky ceiling in the bathroom that flooded the floor, and we had neighbours in the adjoining room that were smokers and the smoke seeped into our room (I am extremely sensitive to smoke and get allergic reactions). We respectfully requested a room change after we explained the problems we encountered. I reminded him it was my birthday and that if he could do something for me as he did for the ladies that *came after us* we would greatly appreciate it. He said nothing could be dine until the following day. We are reasonable people and realize that March is a busy season and that rooms may not be available so we agreed to come back the next day. However, we spoke to some other people we met on the bus on the way to our resort who registered after us and did in fact get a room change. You can draw your own conclusions.

The following day we came back to Hector as we had agreed and he told us nothing was available. I explained that he is being impartial based on what I have seen and heard with other clients as I mentioned above. He was agitated and gave us another room key to check if we like it. It was a very similar room on the other side of the main building so we were quite displeased at this point. I approached the public relations lady who was sitting and witnessing the whole fiasco since day 1 right across from the main reception desk. It wasn't until I told her that I would contact management that magically a better room was indeed available. We spend 3 hours dealing with this nonsense to get a decent room that every client deserves.

I could keep going on and on about the negatives of this resort but I will list it to make it easy to read:
1. The staff are generally very unfriendly with a few exceptions and act as though they are doing the clients a favour rather than just doing their job. There is an air of arrogance with the staff that is very uncharacteristic of the warm and friendly Cuban people.
2. The table linens are not changed so you sit at very stained and dirty tables with no utensils. Servers ignore you until you go up and ask for utensils or drinks.
3. Servers expect tips of they will refuse to do anything for you. Since when are tips mandatory? Last time I checked it is a courteous token of a client's appreciation for quality service, a service you can't even receive at this resort until you wave around some cash. Mind you I do like tipping people but it has to be for something.
3. Cockroaches in rooms (not too big a deal i can live with that) but cockroaches running all over the buffer serving tables where the food is laid out is a big no no. This is unsanitary and indicates how the facility and kitchen is run.
4. Most of the time the drinks are watered down, even the cappuccinos! That is very likely because the bar tenders do not put any effort into drinks they make, its quick and dirty. Effort and care counts! At Breezes Varadero every drink is a masterpiece made with care and attention to detail. Its such a pleasure to receive such a drink and indulge. This is when you feel great about tipping the bar tender!
5. The entertainment team was almost non-existent! More than half of the activities mentioned on the activity board didn't happen and the only time we saw them was once during the Cuban themed day party around the pool and at evening times to introduce and conclude the shows. That is it! What's worse is that we had 4 days of cold weather ( just bad luck due to a cold front that seemed to come in at the same time as our flight) and there were no activities to keep clients busy since they could not enjoy the beach or pool. Other resorts, especial Sol Melias and Breezes go out of their way to ensure that during cold weather the clients are preoccupied so that their vacation doesn't seem wasted. Wow! This was one of the greatest disappointments. Since this is a adults only resort I expected that they would gage various entertainment at various age groups...but nothing at all. Other resorts gather people at the lobby after the shows in the evening to go out to the city for some dancing at the various clubs, Melia Las Antillas on the other hand puts their clients to sleep due to boredom. I went to bed early thinking the faster I fall asleep the better the chances are that tomorrow will be a warmer day so I can at least enjoy the Varadero beach (this is something no one can ruin! It's beautiful! But i will let you in on a secret: the best and finer whiter sands are closer to the city of Varadero, any resort south of Melia Las Americas. The more north you go the more rockier it is and the sand is grainier and a little darker.

Overall the resort is OK for Cuban standards if I was comparing it to Grand Caribe (Cuban owned resorts and managed by Cuba - the very worst) but for a Spanish chain like Sol Melia Paradissus it should be of a much greater standard like the ones in Cayo Santa Maria (Las Dunas) or Cayo Coco/Cayo Guillermo keys (almost all are excellent resorts). Its no wonder RIU resorts closed down in Cuba, they could not maintain the same quality in Cuba as they do in other destinations and this started to affect their reputation. The Barcelos and Iberostars are on par with Sol Melia resorts but in Cuba its always a hit or miss.

The grounds of the resort are nice but the public washrooms need toilet seats and better cleaning.

Most importantly I think management needs to change and this rerort needs a real kick in the but if you know what I mean to restore it to its former glory.

 Melia Las Antillas, Varadero

Upon arriving at the reception desk, we were given our rooms and a bellboy came up with our bags. I immediately saw that the accommodations were incorrect because there was a king bed and I had specified twin beds, as I was travelling with my son. I went back to reception where I was told that nothing could be done as all rooms with twin beds were booked. He told me to check in the next day, which I did, to no avail. I kept checking for three more days at which point I was told that they could take the king bed out and put in single beds. My son was in the room when they came to make the switch and to our shock, the "king" bed was pulled apart and it was actually two twin beds the whole time!!! I couldn't believe it - why would they keep us waiting!!! I checked my girlfriend's "king" bed and it also was two twins beds pushed together!!! Why it took them so long I'll never know but what an inconvenience. I had to bunk with my girlfriend until the situation was looked after and that was an inconvenience for her!!!

I must say, though, that the rooms were clean but the bar fridge never got refilled even after leaving a tip in it. They did leave a new large bottle of water every day.

The maids were very friendly and thanked us for our gifts every day. The bar staff in the main lobby were great, as were the buffet staff. We made a couple of friends from the staff! Unfortunately, the food left much to be desired - very bland with few vegetables.

The beach was beautiful - this was worth the trip for sure! Lovely clear, clean ocean with great waves and soft, fine sand. The weather was hot and humid, only raining one day and cloudy one day.

Overall, the stay was very relaxing and comfortable.

On my next return, I would probably upgrade to a 5-star resort.

 Staff was awesome!

For a Melia, we were a bit dissappointed but in general, we had a great time. You make it what you want it to be! The food was pretty good for cuban standard.
Lots to do in Varadero campared to a few years ago. We went to a restaurant called Bellamar on first ave near 15th street and had a big lobster tail for 15 cucs. It was delicious!
Cuban people were great a usual. We love Cuba.

 Beach 5 star

Beautiful grounds & pool area. Hotel is large but still has cozy feel. Rooms are dated, need plumbing fixture replacement & decorations on walls. Bed mattress was poor.
Hotel lacks a swim up bar & the beach bar is too far off the beach.
Internet was slow & expensive.
Gymnasium equipment is old & needs upgrading.
Overall, good value for a relaxing sun filled vacation of rest.

 Winter getaway

The hotel is nice. There was a shallow lagoon with lots of fish and 2 nurse sharks. The pool is big with lots of space around for people. The junior suite is roomy, with a firm king bed and a rocking chair. Met lots friendly people both staffs and guests. We had a great time.

 A dream come true

Las Antillas was absolutely wonderful! The service was great, and the food was awesome! Everyone was very cheerful and helpful. The nightly entertainment was also great. Our room was always well maintained and cleaned. All in all, we enjoyed it so much that we are planning on returning to Las Antillas next year - we wouldn't even dream at looking at other hotels after our splendid experience with Las Antillas

 Above expectation....

This was my second trip to Cuba. We were there from Dec 25 - Jan 1. The whole week was absolutely amazing. The food was great - fresh, lots of seafood, lots of choices. There are two different bars you can eat at for lunch in addition to the buffet. We ate at the pizzeria almost everyday for lunch. Service was good but it's sad how much of expectation is placed on tips. Things have definitely changed since the last time I was here in 2008.
We took the jeep safari trip and that was a lot of fun. It was nice to see how people live outside of the city.
The shows at night were unbelievable - way way way above our expectations.
The hotel itself is a bit old, rooms are very standard but anything that we needed was automatically attended to. The beach was beautiful - cleaned everyday.

 Watch out for the bridges!

since I was there last year and had a great time, I thought I would have the same experience this year, but this was not the case. the level of the hotel has gone down, especially the food. I was very disappointed this time.
this hotel is no more than a 3 star at best.
watch out for the bridges going to the pool and beach area. very dangerous when wet. I slipped and fell the first day there and had to spend a whole day waiting for the doctor - who is suppose to be in his office 9-5 every day.
I ended up leaving to go to a different hotel due to not being able to walk over the bridges anymore due to my injured foot. Needless to say I did not enjoy my vacation at all as I could not walk for the rest of my stay.

Would go back to Cuba, not necessarily here

Sheets were dirty upon arrival (5am) and we were told there was nothing to be done until morning. A ton of bugs on the floor, we had just fallen asleep then a housekeeper came with new sheets. The next day we changed rooms and our experience just got better. The front desk seemed under staffed and slow. The food was excellent, lots of variety. On at least one occasion the sheets were stained and still in use. The beach here was great, we walked down a ways and at the other resorts the beach was not as good.
