Beautiful scenery, amazing hotel and staff

All and all a great trip, but I got LOTS of bug bites...saw no bugs?
If people say food in Cuba is poor, they have never been o al a carte at tryp peninsula.

 Tryp Varadero

I would have to say this is one of the nicer hotels in this area. Great for couples, familes, seniors * NOT a party resort for young people.

Beautiful resort, grounds, facilities, staff.

 Awesome time!

This was my first trip ever and it was beyond what I had expected for sure. The hotel was awesome and very clean and very friendly staff. Would go back again for sure. The beaches are great, no problems with food or anyone at the resort. Was overall an awesome time!

 Varadero TRYP Peninsula 2012

This resort was great the grounds are very well maintained great very hard working staff helpful in every way. My only negative thought would be the line ups having more staff would make this resort awesome.

 Nice resort-poor food/service

The initial impression of the resort was nice resort clean rooms. After a few days of our stay we realized the rooms do not get cleaned thoroughly, towels not replaced even after several requests and leaving a generous tip daily for the maid. Food is terrible and most staff are not pleasant. We had good service from a couple of the staff at the hotel. Even at check out, nobody bothered to ask us how our stay was. Very poor service and we will definately not stay here again. Also we arrived at the hotel at 11:00 am and we were told we could not check in until 4:00 pm, when we returned at 4:00 pm they told us it would be another hour and didn't care we have been there for 5 hours already. At this point I was not taking it no more and we got a room after alot of arguement.

Set your expectations before you go!

I had been to this hotel 8 yrs ago & was looking forward to returning; the grounds are beautiful, the beach is incredible and the pools are fun for kids. Unfortunately, the rooms are showing their age; the maintenance staff are great but don't have the necessary parts to be able to properly fix things.
Overall, it was a good vacation because we refused to let all the set backs ruin it.
We checked into our room & the toilet wouldn't flush. Maintenance was called & fixed it temporarily. It wouldn't be the last time he was called for the toilet or other issues.
There was a flood in our closet, where our clothes got soaked. Maintenance came again to fix it. We were told to go to our a la carte restaurant reservation & the maid would come by to clean up the mess. Upon returning, the maid had left us 2 extra towels so WE could clean the mess!!! After complaining to reception, they apologized & offered to launder our clothes & move us to a different room which we declined....10:30pm is not the time you want to be packing & unpacking wet clothes with a 2 year old...then again, I can't think of a time when you want to be packing wet clothes!!
The next morning, we asked to talk to someone about this & were offered 2 extra a la carte restaurants which was appreciated but didn't come close to covering off the inconvenience.
Other things to note are that you should bring your own towels! There were 3 of us in the room & we only ever received 2 towels, even when we asked the maid for more. This was consistent with everyone we talked to. We left generous tips & brought gifts & it didn't matter - only 2 towels. In addition, the few times we tried to exchange our beach towels there were none available.
The majority of the staff, however, were so incredible that they more than made up for all of the issues.
Will we return to Cuba? Maybe. Will we return to the Tryp Peninsula? Never.

 Nice Place

Very enjoyable experience, everything we needed was there, any problems were solved very quickly. Food selection was reasonable, no surprises. Beach was great, pool area was very accesable and clean. Snack bars and resturants had a good selection of foods. Will recommend this place to family and friends.

 Disappointed

I had stayed at the Tryp 5 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I was looking forward to returning but was disappointed on my return. The service was not as good as I had experience previously and the food definitely was not as good. Over all I left feeling dissappointed.

 Good, but not amazing

It was a good hotel. There really wasn't anything I would complain about, but there was no woah factor. If you go make sure to check out the beach right down town Varadero because that has a woah factor. The adult pool is very packed and the kids pool has less kids then the adult. If you cant find a spot there go to the kids pool its just as nice if not nicer. But they dont serve alcohol at that pool so bring an extra drink.

 3 Star TRYP Peninsula

This is no where near a 5 star resort when compared to the other resorts we have been to, in fact when compared to 7 trips in the last 6 years, this gets a 2 star for buffet food The resort grounds are fine but if the food is low star what does it matter. The rooms Maid service was 1 star since 1 bar of soap for 7 days was not enough for 2 and the shower gel ran out and was not replaced, the beds were not made 1 day despite the good tip the day before. Overall a 3 star at best even compared to others in Varadero

 Tryp Peninsula

The food was not good. Very bland. The hotel ran out of a lot of things such as bread for toast in the morning. Although there was a children's pool and 1 adult's pool a lot of guests had there children in the adult's pool even hanging around the swim up bar. We were not given any beach towel exchange throughout the week. The only restaurants worth going to were the Japanese and the French. The cuban restaurant menu was designated so no choices were available and the italian restaurant substituted items on the menu.
The beds were terrible as were the lounge chairs by the pool. Our room was extremely musty smelling although clean.

 Tranquille

 Great Time had by all!

Let me tell you that our week was great, this is a great family resort. The resort is small which we liked a lot, the rooms were very nice and clean, the beds were a little hard but we got used to that (when you are used to a pillowtop!)

The buffet restaurant is really nice, the food selection is good, you will find something for sure, the grills are fabulous. We can't say enough about the Japanese Restaurant, soo much fun! What can I say about the beach always fabulous! Check in & Out was no problem. The staff here are the best outstanding! The grounds are spotless and lots of trees!

 Very Nice Place to Visit

The flight out of Toronto was delayed about an hour. The flight was good with friendly attendants. But because of the delay in take off our landing was also delayed and 3 large planes arrived at the same time. This led to long line at customs. All went well at the aiport and unto the bus we go.
We arrived at 2 am at the Trypp Penensula resort. Only 1 person at the checkin desk . We were about 6 couples back in line when a woman start to complain about something. This went on for 10 to 15 minutes, finaly he put her aside and continued on with the other people, now everything went fast. Got to our room about 2:40 am ,put our lugage in and went to explore the lobby bar.
The people and the hotel were excellent. The beach (which was a long walk from our room) was great. The resort itself is large and well laid out . Food typical Cuban but I was never hungry. Snack bar by pool was open 24hrs for food or drinks.

 First Time to Cuba

Beautifully laid out hotel in a park like setting with gracious and helpful staff. Beaches were clean and food was better than I expected considering reviews I have read about Cuban food. Entertainment and activities were also a plus with talented musicians and exceptional dancers. I would definitely return to this hotel.

Great vacation, we relaxed and got happy

Great experience. Definitely eat dinner in the ala carte restaurants, they are all a big upgrade over the standard buffet. We were lucky enough to eat in all 4 (you're only entitled to 2, but we bought a 3rd on a $30 "Romantic" promotion, and got a 4th as a bit of a "favour" shall we say :-) ). The French restaurant was excellent as was the Japanese. The Italian was a bit strange. I don't think the local people really have a grasp of what Italian culture is like. Musicians played songs like Piano Man and Dust in the Wind in the Italian restaurant, which was a bit, well, odd. The Mexican restaurant was average but still better than the buffet.

The buffet featured long lines every morning for eggs, and REALLY long lines for the other meals if you wanted something like pasta. Probably worth it though as the rest of the buffet doesn't change much. This is Cuba though; the food is never a highlight in Cuba, so go in with low expectations, I don't think it gets much better anywhere else.

We were treated exceptionally well by almost all staff. Our housekeeper went out of her way to serve us with new sheets after our 3-year-old had a little accident, even though I don't think new sheets were on the order for the day. She really treated us with care, never like we were a pain when we requested a bit of extra service. Our server in the buffet also remembered us and treated us very specially.

We stayed in villa #17 which was in the centre of the resort, perfectly located, close to everything, and never noisy at night. Others have said stay in villa 26 or higher, and initially I was disappointed when I found out we were going to be in 17, but this turned out to be better in my opinion. It made for a bit longer walk to the beach (ooh, so now 5 minutes instead of 2, ha!), but a shorter walk to the food and kids pool and kids area, and also got us away from the noise of the Adult Pool. Perfect location in my opinion.

We managed to see 4 shows while there. The Internacional Show was by far the best, I would highly recommend it, as they have a live band and live singers on stage as well as about a dozen dancers. All very talented people. That one show was particularly smooth and polished and flowed really well, we were very impressed. The Disco show was average (and also not very Disco at all), and the CineMix show was quite disjointed with large gaps between the numbers, as well as some technical problems (buzzing) from the speakers. The performers seemed only half into those last 2 shows, but these 2 shows were at the end of the week, and it was the same performers in every show, so they were no doubt exhausted.

The beach was fantastic. Really nothing to complain about. Beautiful sand. Some people are complaining of seaweed but from what I saw it was very minimal, and I only mention it because I thought it was pretty much no detriment at all to our enjoyment. Vendors were never a problem and though present on the beach never approached us.

The Adult Pool with swim up bar was also really nice. Very comfortable atmosphere, great bartender there, and the food was ok, but served quickly and the waiters were very attentive.

Kids Club was a disappointment. There was no one there to supervise young children (I was led to believe there would be someone. We were hoping for a day or 2 max to leave our young son with someone so my wife and I could have some quality time together, but it was not to be. We love our son but everyone needs a break! You won't get it here.) On the one day there was supposed to be a "show" for the kids, we were told to be there at 10am for it. Around 11:30 a somewhat creepy clown finally arrived to "entertain" the kids...really not worth waiting for.

The only other negative experience there: getting money from the cash window was a long, torturous waste of time. I guess they only allow one employee to handle money transfers from Canadian to Cuban, but it was so slow. There really is no way it should take over 5 minutes per person just to simply convert currency. Later in the trip I realized there were busy and slow times. If you can drop by the window around 3pm you will get served almost instantly. But show up in the morning and you will wait over an hour in a very long line. Easy to solve problem, they just need more windows and more staff to perform this very basic task. Hire more people for this! Everyone needs cash and we were all told getting it at the hotel was preferable to the airport.

Same thing for booking a la carte's. The line can be hugely long in the morning, but virtually non-existent in the afternoon, so just come back at another time if it's long, don't waste your vacation in line.

Reading this back I've done some complaining I guess, but really we were very very happy with this resort and the complaints were the only lowlights. 98% of the time we were happy as could be, relaxed, without a care. Would highly recommend this resort, it beats the others we have been to in Varadero. You just have to be ready for what Cuba can be...waits in line and average food. The great service, weather and accommodations more than made up for those slight drawbacks. We would definitely return.
