First time but not the last!!

Really enjoyed our stay!! We had an unrenovated room, they are dated but still not bad. Was very clean and had all amenities. Was warned about the food, but I had no issues. Previously went to a 5 star in Mexico and would say food was comparable. People treated u as u treated them. I was curtious and kind and received the same in return. I would deffinitly recommend to a friend

 My trip

Tha hotel was great and very accommodating.Sunwing however should try to accommodate their customers a lot better. Our flight landed at 730 am ,we were at the hotel within an hour, great customs system at airport. But check in time was at 400 pm.We had to wait 6.5 hours in the lobby after a long flight. Not very accommodating,my husband is over sixty and we were exhausted! Perhaps the Flight Center should help correct this poor booking practice.I do not think we will be booking holidays with you anytime soon ,if that's the best you can do!

 Amazing Time

Staying in playa de oro was amazing. the staff was absolutely amazing. The resort was so beautiful, and relaxing. The only thing i did not enjoy was the food. im quite a picky eater, so i lived off of beer, pasta, and ham and cheese burgers. when i come back to cuba, we will be staying at playa do oro again.

 Great week of sunshine

The beach was nice but it can get very windy. It was windy 5 out of 7 days we were there, so they cancelled all non-motorized activities. There were lots of annoying vendors. In order get a sunbed and a hut, you have to get up early like 6am and reserve one either at the beach or at the pool. You can't get any beer at the beach until 12:30pm, you have to walk back to the pool bar to get it after 10:30am or to the lobby bar if you want beer before 10. At night, the lobby bar don't serve alcohal after 11:30pm. So you have to walk to the beach bar or the disco to get drinks. Bring your own Bubba thermos. Food was ok but repetitive and not much to choose from. We emailed ahead asking for a renovated room. We got a renovated 1320 on the 4th floor in building 1 next to the lobby building. Mini fridge is not stocked up. You only get a bottle of water on arrival. You have to deposit 10 pesos per towel and there were never any fresh towels to be exchanged in the afternoon. So bring your own beach towels. Staffs had no smiles and cranky unless you tip. Some don't even smile and say gracias even you tip. I can never understand why they have so much to talk about amongst themselves. Just yapping non-stop and don't pay much attension to patrons. All in all, we enjoyed a greet week of sunshine, but we will not return to this hotel.

 What a trip!

This was a good place. The beaches were wonderful, as was the staff, the price, food was interesting and good. For the price, I have no complaints. The kids enjoyed themselves, lots of activities for them to do. The only downfall was there seemed to be no control on the young people at the resort - they were a little out of control, and the staff did nothing until the final day. Overall, I give this a good rating.

 Playa de Oro

The hotel - 2-star maximum, very old rooms with very old and often damaged furniture, bathroom not good looking, no drinking water in the fridge, no daily towels change, no daily cleaning, hard to open/close doors, a/c panel not working, etc. Had to request room change, the first one they offered was terrible. The hotel needs complete renovation.

The restaurants - food not bad, but slow service. You'll need to line up for almost everything. Part of your vacation will be waiting on the line. Not very clean restaurants, but acceptable. The staff is friendly, no complaints.

The beach - nothing special, dirty with leaves and branches from trees near by. Water is nice, clean and blue. Not enough beach chairs, after 9AM no chance to find one. After 1PM no chance to get dry beach towels.

Entertainment - Excellent! 2-3 shows daily by the pool, at the lobby bar and in the theater. Very good professional dancers and musicians. Many sport events by the pool and on the beach. Won't be disappointed, this is Varadero!

 Vacation Dream Land

When we arrived, the hotel room was ready for us .we were given one key, which meant we had to go back to the front desk wait in line and get another. The room was facing the garbage bins from another resort. We are return visitors to playa de oro and felt we should have had a room with some kind of view water ? Gardens ?
We had ants in the bathroom ( take Raid). The handle on the door was broken and did not close. But the room was relatively clean . We thought ! Next morning we just pulled the sheets up , noticing soiled sheets on the one bed ! That did it, we had to go back to the desk. Wait in line , come back 3 x times before we could even speak to the manager. Then come back 2 x times to see if in fact we do get another room. The manager was more than helpful and prepare door our move . Well here we go again., No one to help us , no cart to move our luggage , completely ruined our first day there. As far as the manager she was more than apologetic , and assure us it was their mistake . This was the 4th time at playa de oro and I would go back. It is clean, food is so so, the beach and water is fantastic. We were never able to get A reservation in the Restaurant , we were VERY disappointed. Because the food is much better there.Friendly staff nice place to relax.

 Good Value

Our first time in Cuba. We stayed Mar22-Mar29/12, we paid $615/person CDN for hotel and flight, fantastic weather, I liked the pool mostly and beach, the pool is great for kids and it's shaped like an H with one side ankle deep and great for very young children, other side 1.9 meters deep no diving board, lots of lounge chairs and canopy shade for me who burns easily, I seen lots of couples, seniors and families with young kids, I gave the hotel room a 3 only because there was no bath plug for wife to take a bath, but shower was great with lots of hot water, and room also had no coffee maker, so if your a Tim Hortons regular search ebay for a portable 220v coffee maker, also Cuban plugs are 220 volts so leave your electric razor home, I used shaving foam and a straight razor, there's a excellent hair dryer in the bathroom and a wall safe for your valuables, also put away 25 pesos tax in the safe for each person to leave Cuba and don't lose your passport or else you can't leave Cuba. Taxi cost 12 pesos from Varadero town to hotel, or take the double-decker bus but it stops running after 4pm but plenty of taxis. We flew Sunwing which I recommend. The hotel has a person to change Canadian dollars into pesos, I also used my Visa credit card to get pesos, I got 100 pesos for $103.35 CDN, Oh and if you bring pesos back to Canada with you my Scotia Bank will not buy or sell pesos, I'm stuck with them, so spend/exchange your pesos in Cuba before returning to Canada.

 Slightly less than expected

Overall we recieved what we needed- a room, food and a beach. We thought the Hotel was 'tired' and in need of some renovations and that the staff seem complacent, not really trying to make our HOLIDAY special. The beaches were beautiful and the maid for our room did do a good job.

 Playa De Oro

The Hotel was listed as a 4 Star (I believe it was in 1960!!) ... the bar fridge was rusted on the bottom, the bed mattresses seemed military by being hard and of low quality!! We requested a King size bed but received 2 double.
The Air Conditioner worked very well unfortunately the control didn't forcing us to put extra blankets on the bed at night!! I also got a sore throat, a cough, and the sniffles from the A/C when my immune system was down due to the food poisioning!! NOT A VERY GOOD EXPERIENCE AT ALL!!

Playa de Oro - so so

Looks ok in pics horrible place to go

Hi, my name is Laura I am 22yrs old and I went on vacation to Varadero, Playa De Oro with my boyfriend feb/2012.

I have been to a 5 star and also a 3.5 star in Cuba, and I would have to say I would rather go back to the 3.5 star hotel than Playa de oro anyday.

Let me tell you a bit about my experience.

The first day we arrived, the people were not friendly as usual in Cuba. Our room, the bathroom door did not close also not to mention finding a junebug in our bathroom(which i thought was a cockroache)

In the hotel description it says there is a pool bar HA !there is, yet no one works there, also same with jacuzzi. Its there but no jets. Very busy lines to get drinks at the bar during the day.

Beach was beautiful although. Never enough chairs on the beach to lay down and relax. Must wake up at 7am if you want a chair. Half of the time they did not have enough clean towels to exchange our beach ones in for new clean ones daily.

The buffett was disgusting. I lost ten pounds over 7 day vacation. For breakfast omlette is the best, lunch the buffett by the beach, and dinner I ate pasta at the buffett which isnt that great but the best thing there. For the a la cartes, the beach one was gross and the indoors one I found much better.

None of the food is labelled at the buffett, I was scared to try things that look unfamiliar to me.I was calling it the "mystery food" or "mystery meat".

If you go to Cuba anywhere in general, I suggest you buy raid that kills bedbugs. $10 at Canadian tire. Trust me, I have been 3 times even at 5 stars they have bed bugs. Its well worth spending the $10 to feel comfortable at night in your bed and not feeling the sensation of being bit all night.

Chercher ailleur!!!!

 Better than expected!

The best beach I have ever vacationed at! The rooms were adequate and chambermaid service was excellent. We understand there were better rooms than ours at this hotel. The food was better than we thought it would be after having read other reviews of food in Cuba. The drinks were a little disappointing but that is not our main concern on vacation. All in all we were very satisfied with this resort and would go back to the same one again.
