 Beau voyage

 Hotel Grand Club Santa Lucia

 Great people mgmt awful!

My experience was negative and positive. The grounds were not well up-kept, hot tub was broken and full of garbage, wires hanging out everywhere ver unsafe! Standard rooms are actually across the driveway where you check in and no possibility of ocean view which is what I booked. Got to reception and told me it would cost me 120$ to move my room. Meanwhile he gave another couple a bungalow upgrade at no extra cost! I had to upgrade because it was not safe for my son to cross this rd everyday if he wanted a drink or go to the kids club. I paid the extra money and I saw him pocket it!! I was too tired to argue after being up for thirty hours straight. Would not recommend the ala carte dinners. When changing your money at the hotel your money better be perfect! No marks.dirt, rips etc or they will not take it! I had 200$ I could not exchange to go on any excursions. If it was not for the entertainment staff it would have not been a very good holiday! Food n the buffet was good and plentiful, you will never go hungry. Would I reccomend this hotel, yes for staff but no in general. I do plan on another trip next April but I think at a different location in cuba and will be bringing my othe two children and husband.

 Vacances paisibles

 Great value

People were awesome! Entertainment was pretty good and we always had musicians at dinner!!! Resort was very clean! Food was typical for Cuba but we could always get enough to eat! Beach was great! Check in was a little slow. Travelled with daughter and we met many other ladies traveling alone so there were always people to do things with!

The good, the bad and the ugly

Its Cuba, so expect it to be like Cuba. Weather was nice, but winds were very strong at this resort, making it tough to do water sports.
Food was awful, worse than any Cuban resort ever. There were only five trays for main food, such as chicken, beef, rice and LIVER!! The salad selection was very limited to cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, green peppers sometimes. Once we had olives. The worse was the butter. It was not refrigerated, and was put out and allowed to get warm. It tasted sour no matter what time of day you tried it.
They only had Buccanero beer, so if you preferred Crystal, you had to buy it at 1.00/can at the store, and the fridge in the store was not working correctly, so you got warm beer. Snack bar only had hot dogs and hamburgers. You had to almost beg for cheese, and forget french fries. They never had french fries. Only condiments for the hamburger and hotdogs were ketchup and mustard. A la carte meals were not much better. The seafood meal did not have lobster, and was delivered cold to the table. We had to ask to have all four plates warmed up. The shrimp was served boiled with the heads and eyes still on.
We did get to eat at Brisas, and the food was much much better. The butter tasted great and the bread selection and food was fantastic. Excellent Roast beef at Brisas.
The rooms at Gran Club are tiny, even the junior suite was tiny. We spoke to the manager, and indicated our displeasure at having upgraded to the junior suite, and yet having a tiny room that did not reflect the picture showing a living room on one side, and the bedroom on the other side of the wall. We did get to move to 106, and this was an entire cabin located on the beach. We were very happy with this suite, compared to 211, which is tiny and not worth the upgrade price.
The staff in the buffet were much better than those at Brisas. They were attentive and kind, and very willing to help you out. The buffet did not always open on time, so there were days when many people were standing around for 10-20 minutes.
The fishing trips were 50.00/person on a small boat, which included four fishers and four observers. Fishing is bad in the reef area, so the boat has to go on the other side of the reef, which the captain does not always do. We went twice, and the crew were less than enthusiastic about their jobs.
The eco tour to see iguana's was cancelled as the catamaran had an engine problem.
The horse buggy ride was fun, and cheap.
The best place to fish is at Playa Coco, and it is free if you bring your oown rod and reel (which we did). We saw a guy in the water, and arranged for him to sell us four lobster tails and a snapper for 20.00 CUC. Thomas in the kitchen cooked it for us for 5.00 CUC. This was one of our best meals.
Urina at the public relations desk is the best. She speaks English, French and Spanish very well, and is extremely kind and attentive. She can fix any problems you have.
Entertainment at the resort was terrible. They played the same songs and kids interaction games for three nights. Pool games were OK. Although the pool was cleaned in the mornings, you could see the green algae lining the bottom of the pool. We did not dare go into it. the pool waterfall did not work. The fountains and ponds at the resort did not work at all. There was stagnant green water in one of them, and there were two live flamingos sitting in the dirty water. There were fish in the adjoining pond, which was also green and stagnant. You could smell the stench as you walked past them towards breakfast each morning, or to your room at nights. There was a small vendor area next to the pool but selection was very limited and prices were ridiculous. The store was fairly reasonable, but very limited. The water sports area had water bikes, but you could only go out 200 meters, so you could not go to the reef and see the fish. The catamaran was good, but as mentioned it was very windy so it was a very rough ride on the catamaran. The crew were willing to take you fishing on the catamaran but charged you 15/person per hour. It was ok, but the fish just didnt bite. The grounds at the resort were clean, but the was a lot of seaweed on the beach. In one week, we only saw them clean it once in the morning, and our room looked onto the beach. The majority of the rooms on the beach side, were ok. There are broken statues, and the mini golf is in total disrepair. There is more sand than green in it. The rooms on the other side of the road, (away from the beach) seemed very small, and crowded. There was a hot tub on this side, but the hottub is from 1970 or 1980 and had most of the guts ripped out, and parts missing. It had no water in it, and was not working. The gym at the resort is a collection of old ripped broken down benches to lift weights on. The sauna room was locked and did not appear to be functional. The hairdressing room was very small, but the guy did do a good haircut for men. The rental car service was pretty reasonable. We rented a car and a driver to go to Camaguey for the day. It was 120 for car, gas, driver and our private tour of the city. We enjoyed this the most. Our driver spoke very little english but since we could speak a few spanish words, it was not a problem. There are a few shopping centers near the resort, they are called Centre Commercial. We took the horse and buggy to these places and bought souvenirs. It was a nice outing which cost us 20.00 CUC for about 2 hours. All in all, we made our fun, and relaxed on the beach as much as possible. This hotel is more like a two star hotel. Bring your own junk food, and if possible eat outside of the resort, or buy fresh food from the locals and have the resort cook it for you. We will not go back to this resort but might go to Brisas instead.

 Will not go back

The hotel itself is very clean, and the staff are very helpful. The weather was good, but very very windy every day and sometimes was sand blowing around at the beach. The ocean was occasionally dirty, and the bottom was weedy and had sharp stones/shells you had to watch for. No snack bar at the beach, and the tiny beach bar was so old and rickety it looked like it should be demolished. The public bathrooms were THE WORST, no seats, no paper and half the time they were plugged up[. The BR's in the rooms however were very clean and useable. The room was clean and very well laid out, our only complaint was that the pillows were very hard and small, and would have been nice to have a few more. The food was the worst, and I rarely complain about food. They cooked with huge amount of oil, selection was limited and no coffee or tea at lunch and supper. The coffee at breakfast was usually cold and the staff seemed to have problems keeping up with refilling the buffet. They did =have the most wonderful coconut ice cream available every day, so good. The pool was small but clean and the pool bar staff very attentive. The entertainment staff were very good, very involved with the guests and very good with the children at the resort. Overall experience not the best, but it was cheap and other than the wind the weather was good. We will not be returning here and would not likely recommend this resort.

 Below expectation

First of all on photo that was presented on itravel2000 is another resort. Entertainments and animation crew were amazing, everything else below expectation. Maximum stars 2,5.I recommended it for families with kids, only because of their animation crew.Beach with rocky bottom, full of seaweeds. No bathtub only shower with pieces felling out from the wall. In first room mattress was dirty and piece of staffing were coming from holes. Ants all around, air-condition unit was in awful condition, we couldn’t change any settings, that was blowing in to my head howl night.Between window frame and wall were holes, you could see thru. Mould on ceiling and walls. Finely next day we changed room for additional cost (not just as, there was a line). Most of rooms far from beach. Poor assortment of food. Inconvenient time for breakfast and lunch. No air conditioning. Twice I got fly in my food, my son sow huge cockroach crawling around salad plates. I have pictures , but I can’t download them now(my SD slot is not working).

GREAT DEAL FOR A GREAT TRIP!!

The weather was beautiful during our stay at Gran Club Santa Lucia! It did rain one evening but it was late like 3 am. The rooms were good enough for us considering they were just used for sleeping. The beds were uncomfortable but tolerable. We asked for a king upper level room and recieved a lower level room and two double beds... not a huge problem for us. We left our house maid small gifts(deo, lotion, advil, reactine, shampoo, toys etc)or money $1 CUC and we recieved great service! It was fairly loud because of the music from the disco but luckily my husband and I can basically sleep through anything so it wasn't an issue. As for food... the Italian a la cart was good we had a pizza, and pasta and shared. We didn't make it to the cuban a la cart but heard it was good. The seafood a la cart wasn't good alot of people walked out. The buffet was okay not great. The food was the same for every meal except for the hot grill. We basically stuck to the pasta station, and hot grill station(hamburgers, hot dogs, salmon, fresh fish, chicken, pork, beef etc) in the morning we went to the fresh omlet grill this is your best bet and the fresh smoothies are great too same with bacon. The beach(snack)bar had great burgers and ham & cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches. We found that it was best to be at the buffet as soon as it opened so that you had first dibbs on the good stuff. Check front desk for times of operations of the buffet because it doesn't stay open all the time. The lobby bar makes great cappaccinos and iced capps as well as the best pina coladas. The beach was very windy bringing in seaweed so we basically stuck to the pool. The Playa Bonita Catamaran was great! We went to the disco twice and it was awesome(warning that there are alot of prostitues that will ask for drinks or take them right out of your hands; just snatch them back! also they will grab at you!) If you can get past the prostitution you will have a great time dancing. It is $1 CUC to enter and $1 CUC for a beer and $1 CUC for Water. The entertainment staff were great and very friendly! Pluto, Danny, Junior, Jolio and Bonbon were great company! We took a horse and carriage ride into coco beach and the village to shop at local areas and see the flamingo park. outside the resort you will find alot men that will give you a ride into the village for $10 CUC I recommend you do it! while in the village we were lucky to recieve a fresh lobster dinner for $10 CUC each ( I recommend you do this early on in the week and do it a few times a week because it will be the best meal you will have all week!) Just ask around about it! My husband and I drank slushy drinks, used ice, and had our water refilled from the bars and buffet and were fine we never got sick once. Next door at the Brisas you will find more shopping available I reccommend it. You will also find items downn the beach. There are pedlers on the beach but just tell them no thanks and they will not bother you. Overall we had an awesome time here and would return to this resort in the future. All I do have to add that the jaccuzi wasn't working. For the price of the trip it is well worth the travel! We flew in at odd times but the airport currency bank and shops were open for us on our departure. Take t-paper to the airport, disco, and excursions, as well as hand sanitizer because there is no running water in alot of these places. You will also have to hover ladies because there are not toilet seats either LOL... but don't worry the hotel washrooms are good!

 Great people

We enjoyed our stay here. The food was good, the beach was ok lots of sea weed, the room was great, people were amazing. What more can you ask for in a vacation.
We had a junior suite. Within steps of the beach. If you can book a junior suite or a junior bungalow. Well worth the extra few dollars.

Could have been better, could have been worse!!

First the good; staff was pretty good, but numbers were few in the dining area. Food, not too bad considering it's Cuba...3rd Cuban trip, best food so far. Resort, esthetically pleasing and clean considering it's a 3 1/2 star. Beaches were the cleanest in the area, but quite weedy. Plenty of chairs for all. Pool nice and clean.
The bad; No water pressure. A La Cart's very limited in food choices, and don't enforce the dress code. Too many "sellers" on the beach. 1 1/2 hour trip from the airport without any drinks on the bus...had to buy some at airport prior leaving.
The Ugly; This is a "family" resort, PROSTITUTION, and SEX TRAVELERS quite evident, especially on weekends! Daily at the disco and on the beach. COME-ON MANAGEMENT!!! THERE ARE KIDS EVERYWHERE!!

Trip to Santa Lucia Cuba Feb 2012

The check in was incredibly slow (not enough staff on and everything was manual) but they had entertainment and drinks were flowing and hey....it was Cuba-time so no worries however if you have children it was a long wait so you might want to have one parent take the kids to the pool while the other does the check-in. The staff were/are wonderful, the food was fine and they have purified water on-site and a store to purchase bottled water etc. 24/7 bar in the hotel lobby, pool bar closes at 10 or 11 p.m. and that's it for drinks late at night and a disco on-site which wasn't very busy but most people are done by 11 because of sunshine and daily excursions if you book them. Oh yeah, nightly entertainment starts at 9pm for the kids and then adult show usually runs from 9:30 to 11ish.....they take wonderful care of you and the staff (all of them) are incredible.

 The Kids Loved It!

My 7 y.o. favourite thing was the swim up bar. My 12 y.o. loved horseback riding. My 10 y.o. loved the boats, hobby cat, catamaran, paddle boat. The suites are small for 5 - we got 2, one for the kids and one for my husband and I. Very adequate rooms. We did not spend much time in them. The kid's club is awesome. So many great activities and staff. Snorkelling at the coral reef was the highlight for me. We did snorkel off shore and saw fish, octupus, conch, etc. The pool was great. Everyone found enough choices of food to eat. There was always bread, ice cream, pasta, fish. The snack shack had fries, hot dogs and hamburgers. Our kids could be found there most days. The area is very quiet, not alot of shopping around but some on the resort for necklaces, drums, knick knacks. Take wet wipes-they come in handy in the airport, on boats, etc. Take plastic bags to bring home wet clothes. Take small change to give to porters. Tipping was asked for so we went everywhere with some change. Take extra clothes, toiletries to leave for the locals. You can give a shirt and get the price lowered on items at the beach. My girls got their hair braided beautifully but the elastics broke - take your own. Overall we had a great vacation.

 Disappointing

I have been to Cuba 9 times, usually staying at hotels with 2-3 star ratings. This was the highest star hotel I've stayed at, and probably the worst one I've been to. When we arrived at the hotel we had to wait about 3 hours for our room to be ready. We opened our room door and the floors were dirty, the beds were not made, and towels on the floor. The maids had not been there and it was a horrifying first impression. When we could finally go in, I started to unpack and opened a drawer, and the drawer broke. Could not be pushed back in. Went to turn on a light, bulb was broken. Went to plug in the mini fridge, outlet was broken. Went to take a shower, shower head wouldn't work. Went to use the blow dryer, blow dryer wouldn't work. Every hotel I've ever been to has given us complimentary soap and shampoo but all they gave us was this little shower head which had clearly been used before (ick). The room was bar far the worst I've seen in all my years in Cuba. As for the food, the food is never that spectacular in Cuba anyway, and this was no exception. However, every hotel I've ever been to the waiters have always been spectacular, asking you what you would like to drink the moment you sat down, cleared your plate immediately. This was the first time the waiters wouldn't even look the tables, I had to get my own drinks and grab my own forks, which is FINE, but it was just very unusual at a Cuban hotel. Dining area is rather small and most times at dinner you wil have to wait to get in if you eat around 7.
The beach was very nice. Not the best I've seen, but nice. You can't see fish when you go swimming and the floor is mostly seaweed. White beaches. Main issue about the beach was the locals. I started to get very irritated with them trying to sell me something every 5 minutes. You could not walk along the beach by being bothered by at least 3 locals. That was probably my biggest issue with the beach.
Other than that, everything was good. The pool area very nice, entertainers very nice, a few bars, great drinks. Grounds were nice, lots of activities during the day. Partying and clubs fun at night.
In short, if you are looking for sun (given you go the right month) and a nice beach, and don't really care about the room or the restaurant, then this place is a safe bet. But I warn you the room and restaurant is not 3.5 stars by a LONG shot.

Well worth the money we spent

Beautiful beach, decent food, lots of drinks, and the standard rooms were great for the time we spent in them. Alot of needless complaining was done about this resort. Had a great time with 3 teenage daughters.Only 2 things I would change, more loungers on the beach, and do check in on the bus to the resort. Got a real kick out of Danny and Junior.

 Worth the money

I don't know where all the bad reviews are coming from. I really enjoyed my stay in Cuba. The tours were very imformative, much better than the dominican republic. The beach was gorgeous, only one day was there to much seaweed for me to go in the ocean, but it was just because of the wind. The food was okay, not home, but I could always find something to eat and I'm pretty picky. My only suggestion would be to bring your own salad dressing, that was the only thing I missed. The coffee bar was really good. Tip or don't tip I got the same service no matter what. There was no one bothering me on the beach, actually there was no one who bothered me anywhere for money or anything else.
p.s. my rating is based on vacation spots down south. Not a 4 star in Canada but for down south very nice.

 Had a good time!

Overall the experience was positive. Staff were friendly and helpful. Our daughter was sick though which was hard. She picked up a bug just before leaving. Food was better than I expected. My only issue was that the kids club was more like kids activities. We thought it would be more like a camp where they would go off and do stuff. Since our daughter was sick, she didn't want to participate anyways but that was something that surprised us. I would return but not until the kids are older.

 Great people, great place

The people who work at this resort are wonderful. The entertainment staff are very outgoing (the men more than the women). The food is nothing great but is adequate (lamb was awesome). The beach is great with lots of chairs & shade. We were in a junior suite and did not get a safe key (kept asking but they said they didn't have one) and did not have a coffee maker as advertised but the suite was comfortable & clean. Front desk had 2 wonderful people & 1 lady was not so warm or helpful (can't recall their names now). There isn't much around the resort (small village) we would walk or bike to every morning but it is a more intimate resort where you can get familiar with the staff & guests. All the excursions were great but would not waste money on Camaguey again. There is not much there (beggars) very little shopping & the hotel food was awful.

 Poor Management

This hotel has alot going for it. The design is great. It has a wonderful rustic feel and character. The employees were really great. Less emphasis on entertainment and more on infrustructure would make this the place to be. Waterfalls didn't run. Exhaust over fryer in diningroom never on, so the room was smokey. Light bulbs not replaced. Shower heads not always hung but they have 6 workmen on the stage cover. A little balance would go a long way.
