 Sirenis Playa Turquesa now RIU.

We were at this resort in 2006 when it was an Occidental. We were the last group of guests as a Sirenis property.

This years vacation was booked even after reading all the negative reviews on this site and tripadvisor. We do feel the resort has aged in the last 6 years but it's certainly not nearly as bad as some have expressed in some reviews. Staff were all very friendly - we were friendly to them and they reciprocated. There were a couple occasions where the food selection could have better but we did not ever starve or not find something to eat. We accept that the food we receive in Cuba is very different from that at home in Canada. We go to the buffet with an open mind and try the different offerings. Some things we like - and others we don't - not a big deal.

The only real complaint we had takes issue with the condition of the pools. Despite us seeing the staff cleaning it and putting chemicals in at night they were still green from algae. There is a clear problem with the pools. A healthy pool should not be that colour. We did not use the pool. We may have used it if it were not so green. This didn't really inpede our vacation because we usually spend as much time as possible at the beach.

We really did not have any problems on this trip. Room was the typical Cuban room. Two twin beds pushed together to make a king. No hand towels or washclothes. Room was always kept clean by staff; fridge stocked daily with 2 beers, 2-3 soda, and a large bottle of water. No problems getting beach towels. No problem getting our fill of drinks at any of the bars. We tipped but certainly didn't feel we needed to "over-tip" to get good service...infact we didn't start tipping anyone until our third day in. So that had no bearing on the service we received.

Would we go back....for sure. If the price was right (again) we would return to see what RIU can do for this property. Looking forward to it.

PS. Despite many, many posting about this location been large and having lots of stairs we still heard many people discussing their disatisfaction about having to walk a lot to get around and about the number of stair to negotiate. People need to do their homework before they book. If you don't like to walk and do stairs don't go here. We tend to enjoy the extra exercise since we tend to over-consume while on vacation. We feel it's a good way to burn the extra calories!!!

 Second and Last Visit

I first stayed at the resort in 2008 where it was still called the Occidental Grand Playa Turquesa. Now it's called the Sirenis Playa Turquesa, techically a better owner! The Sirenis in Varadero is awesome...but obviously the "awesome" factor doesn't automatically come with the name!

The food was just terrible. A staff member actually got mad at me for getting up and getting my own drink at the buffet. The connecting doors to our room DID NOT CLOSE OR LOCK (we did not know the couple staying in the next room). When the bathroom faucet would run, the water would spill out on our feet rather then follow its original track through the pipes. I think the "family friendly resort" image was tarnished due to extremely noisy and active neighbors during the night. During the days it DIDN'T RAIN, the pools where on the green side. Our first room was originally about 15 minutes walk from the pool/beach/buffet/front desk...and when we finally were in a closer room, IT RAINED FOR 3 1/2 DAYS!!!

Overall definatly my worst experience in Cuba...will not recommend to friends or family.

 Sirenis Playa Turguesa

Our week at SPT was good. This was our 7 vacation to Cuba and 4th to Holguin area. The resort was pretty much as expected and no better or worse than other resorts in the area. The staff were very good. I found no difference in service if I tipped or did not, but I received a "gracias" with each so I am confident they were appreciated. I like to walk, so the expansiveness of the grounds were welcome.

The food was good but not exceptional. Table staff in the buffet was above average. Drinks were delivered swiftly and any requests were actioned without delay. The a la cartes were good but not exceptional. They should be. An a la carte dining experience at an all inclusive resort should always be a memorable experience.

The nightly entertainment was dull and needs some improvement. The focus seems to be on culture and should be on entertainment.

On the bus ride to and from the Sunset Cruise, the guide, (Edward I believe was the name he used) gave a presentation like non other. It contained none of the usual propaganda that we are used to hearing while we are in Cuba. He spoke, at length with typical Cuban humour, about the changes that Cuba is currently seeing under Raul Castro. Edward was very frank, candid, and I believe honest. I will remember his words for a long time.

So, all in all a good trip and we're already planning for next year.

 Fantastique!

 Great trip!

hotel exceeded our expectations, especially after reading a few of the reviews. Overall we had an amazing week with little to no complaints!

pros: hamburgers at snack bar, tacos at the buffet, water show on tuesday night, beach was beautiful, pools, grounds and gardening were impeccable, room was huge and centrally located in the 400 block, staff was friendly, 5 out of our 7 nights we were able to book an a la carte (through nolitours), variety in food choices in the buffet (but expect a day of adjustment in trying everything to find what you like), late check out for nolitours guests with no charge,

cons: rooms were poorly insulated, however we never had to use our earplugs , not much of a party scene if you are looking to go clubbing, they do not sell aloe at the store or the pharmacy, sunscreen was VERY expensive, so make sure to bring more then you thought, some friends we met stayed in the 800's and needed to take a trolley everywhere (10 min walking to main lobby), and the nightly entertainment needs some updating

even though we do list cons, the pros heavily outweighed the cons during this trip and we got home feeling very lucky and happy to have gone to this resort! Best value hotel we have been to ever!

 Great time had by all

We loved everything about this hotel! We had a very positive experience. It is about an hour from the airport. We stayed in room 530 and it was perfect, very quiet but close to everything!!! The room was big, we had 1 double bed and 2 single beds, the bathroom was great, separate stall for the toilet, separate for shower and separate for sink so many people could use bathroom together. Veranda was nice and private, with comfortable lounging chairs. Everyone we dealt with was nice and helpful, from the front desk to the gardeners. There are 5 beautiful pools, but we spent the entire time on the beach. The beach isn't as big or as picturesque as other beaches we have gone to in Cuba, but it served its purpose. The beach is surrounded by a coral reef, so even on very windy days, there are hardly any waves. It is shallow so the kids can go pretty far out without worrying about them. The food is what it usually is in Cuba. There is lots of choice and with the Cameleon package you get 5 a la cartes, so we hardly ate at the buffet. All of the restaurants had good food and we all walked out with a full belly. Overall, we were very satisfied with this resort and would recommend it to others going to Holguin.

Price paid was good value for the trip

This is my first time to Cuba and from what I experience, I will go back to Cuba, but not to Holguin. The hotel itself was beautiful. Large, spacious, and very well maintained. Rooms were large, but the beds were very, very uncomfortable. The staff was very nice and our maid was very sweet. Even left us a little note at the end of our trip. During the day, there were only a handful of activites to keep us busy. We didn't know what was going on where nor did anyone inform us of where to see a listing of activities. There is absolutley no nightlife there. Might as well go to bed at 10pm cause after that, there is nothing. Weather was beautiful, but very windy. Wish they had room service. I had brought my own tea and was very happy that i did as some mornings, it took forever for service at the buffet. In Cuba, they are for sure on a different schedule then us! All in all, I would recommend the resort to a family travelling but not for a couple or young adults. I will try Veradera, Cuba next as I am told there is much more to do.

A second great vacation at this hotel

We had been to this hotel last year and it was great...that is why we returned for a second time!! . A few minor glitches but nothing major( got our room really late, beach towels were not left in our room, ran out of toilet paper in our room every day & the phone did not work but everything was taken care of very quickly by Alla (our rep) & the front desk personnel ....would we go back again? Yes!!...Ocean Paradise excursion
is a must!!!

 GREAT TIME

We ahd a great time. We enjoyed our room, the pools, beach and also found the food passable. Can't find much to complain about the place was full and at night we could of sworn we had the place to ourselves. Make your holiday! Don't expect the resort to make it for you.

 Great Vacation

Stayed at SPT the last week of Feb & had a great time. Went there for rest & relaxation and that is exactly what we got. The entertainment was above usual as was the food. The rooms, grounds & lobby were always cleaned. What a tram was needed it was there in a few minutes. We stayed in the 100 section and really liked being at the top instead of down by the beach because it was easier. Once we were at the beach we stayed there and only came up for lunch or stayed at the beach restaurant. Once the day was over it was better to be at the top so the stairs weren't really a problem for us. We're in our early 60's and found the stairs no problem. If we didn't want to take the stairs we took the walkway. I snorkelled every day. It goes way out and isn't deep. You can use the paddle boat which made it a lot easier. I would go back again.

we had a great time, there are a lot of stairs as it is built on a hill but they drive around with trolleys and will pick you up.  Great!

This was my third time to Cuba (once Veradero and once to Cayo Coco)and I really enjoyed Holguin. The beach was gorgeous as well for the pools. The buffet was surprisingly good for Cuba, since it's not known for its food quality.
The rooms were very clean and I really enjoyed the high ceiling in our room. Only problem is that the hotel doesn't have enough king, queen or double beds, so we got stuck with two single beds and we had to push them together... However, that was the only downfall of the whole experience.
Overall this was a great resort and I would for sure recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great vacation.

 Vacation

The grounds, pools and beach are very beautiful on this resort. I found the service very mediocre. I felt like the staff relied heavily on the tips. I am happy to tip but it felt like everyone from the towel lady to the cooks to the banking lady wanted to be tipped. My biggest problem was the size of the resort. I came with my disabled mom. We spent most of the time at the beach. It was very difficult to get access to the pools. You may want to emphasize the size of the resort so that families with small children requiring strollers and disabled people will know that it's difficult to get around.
