Excellent Stay at Club Villa Cojimar!

Just came back from a wonderful 1 week stay at Cojimar. Let me say upfront that this is not a 5 star hotel. But, it is an absolutely wonderful 3 star hotel where you get 5 star service and friendliness. The resort, while somewhat older, is kept spotless. All the hotel staff could not have been more friendlier. Service was always prompt and with a genuine smile. While we were there, the hotel was not too busy and we never had to wait more than 30 seconds at any of the bars. The food too was very good. The breakfast buffet, admittedly, was not as extensive as some 4 or 5 star resorts that we have been to, but there was always omelets, panacakes, and french toast made to order, not sitting pre-made in a steel container. All meals were always freshly made and steaming hot. As well, all food was fully cooked. I have been to many other highly priced and highly rated resorts where this was not the case. There was ample chair around the pools and on the beach. Sure there were a few broken chairs, but there was never a problem finding a chair. Again, I have been to other more expensive resorts where you need to get up before the sun comes up to get a beach chair. The room, while older, was always clean with a very capable, quiet, and reliable AC. I've spent a lot more and got a lot less. The beach itself was absolutely beautiful. If you are looking for thumping all night discos and clubs, this place is not for you. But, if you are looking for a top value resort to relax, then you cannot beat Club Villa Cojimar. Highly recommended! Do not believe others who complain about this property. Sure, there will not be lobster on the buffet, but you will find freshly cooked fish, pork, and fish almost every night. For the $545 we paid each, including taxes, this is a no brainer. One weekend in Niagara Falls would cost more than this.

 As expected

This was my third time to this resort & I took my grandsons (3) We did have a great time. There have been renovations and new villas added which are very nice. There is also a new Cuban restaurant & it is overlooking the beach & is very nice. The staff mostly are very nice with the exception of a few. Disappointed with the pool staff & the way activities were run. It was slow season and there was not a lot of people there which in the long run sometimes can be good. Communication was not always the best & we were redirected at least 4 times to find out about the use of bicycles, tennis or archery. I am not looking for a lot when I go except quiet, relaxing & reading & don't mind what others do. I would definitely return when I get the low prices which is what is important to me. It is Cuba & you have to understand that the food is different (probably healthier)but not like home. You have lots of it but variety is limited. I would definitely go again as it suits my needs just fine

Our trip to Cayo Coco Cuba

We stayed at the bungalow's. I thought they were perfect, lots of room, privacy, very clean. Anything we needed, they got it right away. The only thing we were disappointed in, was they didn't provide us with bottled water, we had to buy it. But it only cost us about $10 for the 7 days, so I guess thats not too bad. I would definitely go there again.

 A slice of Heaven

This is the first holiday that I didn't want to come home.

We arrived on April 19 for the week. Check in was great and we upgraded to a Jr. Suite for $20 a day. This gave us one of the new two room cabins (Rm 309/310) the last cabin on the beach. It included a late check out, bottle of rum, 4 reservations in the a la carte restaurants, private lobster dinner, stocked mini bar in room and vip amenities, This room made our week with its fantastic view even more special.

We went with an open mind as we have read so many bad reviews about the food. I was pleasantly surprised about the choices and pleased that you could have your meal freshly cooked. We also found out how avoid the lets play find cups/glasses. Once the staff gets to know you they will bring you your coffee, juice to your table at each meal if you sit in their section and take good care of you. The a la carte were good and we found the Italian to be the best, make sure you try the pizza. The Cuban had a great hamburger/fries for lunch.

The beach is the best we have been to. It is very shallow and you have to walk out for what seems like miles to find deeper water. Their was a lot of kite surfers which was amazing to watch. What a way to spend a day especially as we could walk out of our room to the beach which was a few steps away.

The pool is where all the action is as it was just renovated in December and has new loungers. The bar staff are the best and none of the drinks are weak. We found it funny just how strong they were are we take our large plastic thermal mugs. You have to be careful as they fill them 2/3 with alcohol and then top it off with pop. Make sure you keep you eye on the station that makes donuts and they are really good.

We met some of the friendly people at this resort both staff and guests. If you get the chance make sure you go to Pilar beach for the day. Worth the price of $5 CUC for a bus pass for the day.

We are looking forward to going back and for the price we paid it was one of the best vacations we have taken.

The hotel is nice. Some rooms much nicer than others. It is spread out as they are villas. This is a nice concept if you don't mind the walking. The food was very bland and repetative, as I heard the same from people I met from other resorts. Beach was great. Not too deep. There could have been a better disco. Over all in my eyes it is higher than a 3 star rating. People were nice too!

Lied to by travel agent! Rita

The people who worked there were nice, but my toilet constantly ran, complained 3 times nothing was done, the beds, just terrible unless you pay the extra 120.00 then you get a nice room. I was told I would get oceanview, we did not get it, again pull your money out and you will get it. It stated it was included, not true, this was my second time to cuba I knew what to expect. When I booked my trip I was lied to from the get go. So would I book with you again, never! The food after 3 days your sick of it, could not wait to get home for real food, I knew this also. The best part about the trip were the people who worked there and the people I met there, once we met them we had fun. The jeep excursion was amazing, and the people who ran it were the best! I would return to this resort if I had a different room, and better food.

 Ok value for the money

All in all this was a less than impressive trip. This is my 9th trip to Cuba in the past 4 1/2 years so I have a very good understanding of Cuba and know what to expect when travelling. That being said; this was by far our least impressive trip.

Check in was painless and we were off to our room in about 15 minutes. The Room:

No complaints about the room. Still not sure why water is not supplied in the room but $2.00 a day for water I have no complaints. We had a frog for a roomate the entire stay but he stayed in the bathroom so we had no problems. The room was clean when we arrived and cleaned perfectly every day and almost always cleaned by noon.

Buffet Restaurant:
We never travel to Cuba expecting North American style food and this trip was no different. Breakfast is a typical Cuban Buffet Breakfast however I've never seen hotdogs in so many dishes than at this resort. We had read reviews where plates were hard to come by and figured it was likely due to a large number of guests but we were wrong. The resort was maybe 1/3 full and unless you were at the Buffet when it opened or near the end of the meal the wait for plates sometimes exceeded 10 minutes. The omelette station was worth the wait as was the crepe station. All in all a typical Cuban Breakfast with one exception; the service. Generally speaking I tip at every meal but there were many times I felt a tip was not deserved. Most meals we had to find a clean glass and get our own juice. Rarely did we ever get offered a juice or water refill. If I didn't know better; it felt like the wait staff were afraid to interact with people. There were exceptions to the service issue but there were few exceptions.
Lunch brought the same long wait for plates but the food was as edible with a decent amount of choices. There was always fresh fish/beef/pork/chicken being prepared and the hand made pizza's were great !! Service issues continued and it was again next to impossible to get a refill of water or wine unless you flagged down a wait staff person and asked for it.
Dinner was alot like lunch. Numerous options from a food perspective and no issues with the food at all. I have a sensitive stomach and nothing I ate upset my stomach. I have more issues eating in Canada than I did in Cuba.

Italian A la Carte:
Service was ok but nothing special. The food was good but not great. We celebrated my wife's birthday and the chef made her a heart shaped pizza. $12.00 for a bottle of "sparkling wine."

Cuban A la Carte:
Not a single negative regarding this experience. This is the food and service we've come to expect when travelling to Cuba. Spend the $15.00 and get the Lobster Dinner. 2 Lobster Tails with all the trimmings - well worth the money. Service was impeccable !!

Lobby Bar:
No complaints at all. Rarely ever waited more than 2 minutes for a drink. The bartenders are friendly and do their best to entertain with a smile.

Beach:
Aside from one small section there is very little shade on the beach. There are better beaches in Cuba than Cayo Coco. The beach was being maintained every day from a sea weed perspective however it might have been a good idea to rake the sand on the rest of the beach occasionally The water was extremely shallow.

The pool:
Lots of beach chairs around the pool but practically no shade. Excursions:
We didn't do any excursions however we did a walk to the Marina. On the left side of the road walking towards the Marina we found an opening in the trees where we saw Flamingo's in the wild. Couple of days later we cycled to Playa PIllar. Nothing special but a nice little workout. Most resorts don't charge for bicycles however this one did. $4.00 for a few hours so I'm not complaining.

Animation Team:
Didn't take part in any of the events but there was a lot to do if you wanted to. The Animation Team did a great job in trying to get people involved. If you travel to resorts and enjoy taking part in the fun and games of the resort; this resort will meet and likely exceed your expectations.

Cayo Largo Airport:
For $20; I'd recommend the VIP offering. Got our boarding passes much quicker than 90% of everyone else and got through the Tourist Tax portion faster. You can use the VIP Customs Clearance line however we got through Customs quicker by going into one of the regular lines. The lounge was comfortable and much quieter than the airport. The have an open bar and serve Panini's.

Overall Experience:

The service and lack of shade made this a disappointing trip. This was the first trip to Cuba where I was actually embarrassed to tell people I was Canadian thanks to a large number of rude French Canadians. There were many times where other guests and I would be in line waiting for plates and when they finally arrived the Francophone guests would barge in and take a plate ahead of those who were waiting. Trying to move around the patio outside the Lobby Bar or trying to get to the Lobby Bar was almost impossible. These guests would congregate in large groups and have their chairs blocking the traffic lanes. When I need to move between people or want to get something from the buffet line; I always say "excuse me" however I never once heard those words from a single Francophone guest during our entire stay. A few of the guests from Wales/UK remarked at how they were surprised at how rude the Canadians were.

We paid just over $600 for the trip and got reasonable value for the money we spent. Knowing what I know now; I would have spent the extra $80 and gone to Cayo Largo or $100 more and gone to Santa Maria.

 Good and Bad

Overall, the hotel was good because my son had fun and that was the most importnt for me; seems like the other kids had fun as well. The food was ok, considering the warnings and feedback I got from people who visited Cuba before-the icecream was DELICIOUS! The worker outside and the maids were great and was always available. Love the freshly picked coconut. I recommend the Maron City trip. On the otherhand, the line ups were really long to get food(grilled) and 95% of the time there were no plates- people had to wait for the plates to be washed. Based on what I saw, this place is for families- kids and parents where the emphasis is to make the kids enjoy themselves; The kids really seemed to have a good time and didn't care about the things the adutls didn't like. Not a place if you are looking to have fun as a couple and as a single person

A better than average Cuban 3 star

I have been to Cuba almost thirty times. All my visits have been to 3 or 4 star resorts. At Villa Cojimar I found the food and the bed to be Cuban 4 star. Staff morale is good. As always, go with realistic expectations, take the bumps in stride, and enjoy.

 As We Expected

As we went for rest & relaxation, our trip was good. Have been to this area 3 times now & thorouhly enjoy the beach area & the cuban people. Food is as expected, not terrific, but edible. The fresh lobster we had at small beachfront restaurant was excellent. Staying in a room just off the beach was also a wonderful experience, as we enjoyed the privacy and ambiance.
The resort could turn there sound system down a bit, as everyone was complaining of the noise late into the night. Glad we were informed to bring extra toilet paper & bug spray. Will likely return in future if the pricing stays the same.
