 MELIA CAYO GUILLERMO

Beach is beautiful. Room had a very old bed could feel the springs while sleeping. Bathroom had a foul smell throughout the stay. Food could have had a better variety. Below expectations stay at the hotel. Wish that the travel advisor provided a summary that would have prepared us for the stay. It was supposed to have been a 4.5 star hotel. This was more like a 3 Star.

 Less than 3 star

This is nowhere near a 4.5 star hotel, I have been at 3.5 star hotels in Cuba, and they were much better. We had mold in our room, pictures are attached, it took one day and a lot of complaining for them to give us a new room. This was the first time in 3 trips to Cuba that the staff was asking me to leave them personal items such as clothes and shoes. They were being like beggars. Food was tasteless in the Italian restaurant. The 'international restaurant' food was chewy and took about 2 hours to get it. The only good thing was their nightly entertainment. The mattresses were worn out, you could see the springs through the sheets.

 Great Vacation

We had a great time. We went for the sun and the beach and were not disappointed. Staff were friendly and worked very hard. Kids entertainment was good. Don't forget the staff behind the scene(gardeners and maids). The front desk / reception could work on their customer service skills. Itailian restaurant was good. Buffet could use some revamping in terms of food choices and handling. Overall a great trip.

Not what was expected from Melia

I asked for ajoining rooms some where quiet, they put me behind the disco on the third floor ten rooms apart. I am 70.
the walkway are filled with trip hazards from broken missing stones and missing boards.
the food is below even Cuban standards with poor selection poor quality and usually cold. most dinner times there was a waiting line becuase tables were not yet cleared.
at high tide the beach is limited with constant fights for chairs and sea weed piled high and smelling.
I expected much more from Melia.

 A nice vacation resort

The flight, airport and transfer were fine. We arrived at 11 am and were unable to get rooms until 3:30 pm. We had a room in the area we requested which was central with an oceanview. The food was good although some line ups at peak times. The buffet was noisy. The Ranchon a la carte was fair. The Laguna was very good. We were disappointed that the ocean swimming was poor due to shallow water and grass, however the beach was beautiful especially at low tide. The grounds were fabulous with many walkways and ponds. Shows were average. Service was good. The staff were pleasant for the most part. The guests from one province of our country were rude, loud and obnoxious and over powering. I would go back for the right price. We didn't get the seats we pre-boked and paid for in advance on out going flight however we were upgraded to first class on return flight.

 Amazing Beach

We had a great stay! We will definitely be back to this resort, perhaps yearly. We've been to several other hotels and beaches in Cuba, and this resort stood out.

The beach: is the most amazing beach we have experienced in Cuba. It gets cleaned every morning. The tide is high in the mornings, and is low in the afternoons (providing much space to go for walks or kids to build as many sand castles as they wish!) The water is shallow and you may walk meters in and the water only come up to your knee. The wind here is great for Kite Surfers. We did notice that there were early risers who “booked” beach/pool chairs pretty early in the day, but by noon they were gone! Thus, opening up more space to sit. At the beach, you must go on the Pasarella Hemingway, which is a pier they have that runs a long way into the ocean. There they have beach chairs as well; and you can snorkle here no problem. (The pool was good. We usually prefer to spend our time on the beach when we go.)

The food: was pretty good. The buffet did repeat itself some days, but we didn't mind for there was quite a lot of choices. The a-la-carte restaurants provided really delicious food! There are three a-la-carte restaurants: La Laguna (also known as the International Restaurant), Bonasi (Italian), El Viejo y El Mar (Cuban Grill). These are also open for lunch at a more lay back setting. There is always food available to you at different places, from burgers to danishes to coconuts.

The drinks: are pretty good! Arlent makes a great Mojito! He's usually at the main bar by the lobby (open 24hrs). In total there are 4 bars. At the bars, you will also find cigar stands where you can buy and enjoy with your drink.

The rooms: were pretty clean. We did not have any complaints about them. We had a standard room on the second floor (#3214) -no bugs, great balcony, semi view of the beach, fridge with drinks that got replenished every day, and your own umbrella in the closet for just in case!

The activities: were quite a few. From Yoga, a gym, aerobics on the beach, dance lessons, horseback riding (10cuc for an hour per person), and so on. There are also massage huts (25cuc for 30mins).

The entertainment: in the evenings was great. There was always something happening at each hour -from Sax player, live Cuban bands, guitar players, pianists, children's show, adults' show, and disco.

The employees at this resort really do go out of their way to make you feel at home. Here are a few of the people that made our stay wonderful: Mario (manager of drinks), Yunior (buffet and burger hut by the beach), Arlent (bartender in the Orquideas bar), Eloy (coconut employee by the beach).

Thank you, Melia Cayo Guillermo!

 Melia Cayo Guillermo

Hotel well below expectations. For a 4* hotel, several shortcomings. Arrived Saturday night, no coffee maker in room (supposed to be there). Finally get the coffee maker on Wednesday afternoon, no coffee. After complaining on Wednesday afternoon and again on Thursday afternoon, get coffee, 1 package only. No coffee for the rest of the week. Wash basin has several cracks in it, the stopper doesn't work. Little or no water pressure for shower. Resort could use a freshening up. Food only mediocre at best (even for Cuba), little or no variety. Front line staff did the best they could with what they had. Beach, as expected, was great. Can't and wouldn't recommend this resort.

 Going back next year.

We were booked for a bungalow, but they didn't have it available until the next day. No big deal, we moved into it the following afternoon, and just loved it. We were in 1001, and could just barely see the ocean, but were only steps away. Next year I think we'd like to try and get 1007 - 1010 as they have a much better view. It was also an easy walk to the pool, lobby, buffet etc. and you could walk under cover most of the way to the lobby/dining room, if it rained.
The beach was the best I've been to. Beautifully clear, and quite shallow for quite a way out, which would be fantastic for kids, and made it really nice to walk the beach. No problem getting to a swimming depth with no weeds. We also had no difficulty getting lounge chairs, as they discourage you from "saving" lounges (a big problem elsewhere) which was really nice.
The staff were all amazing, and appreciative of tips, although you didn't get the feeling they expected it. We chose to tip $1 at meals and occasionally to bar tenders etc. We figured if you tipped 5 X a day, that was a whopping $35.00 over the course of the week, (big deal) and we had the satisfaction of feeling we added a little to their meager salaries.
It is a very quiet spot in terms of being one of only 4 resorts on the island, although the lobby bar flowed out into an outdoor area with chairs and tables, and was the hub of activity after dinner. There was always entertainment there in the evenings, and plenty of seating between there and the lobby. We found everyone there, vacationers included, all to be very friendly people, which to me shows that everyone was having a great time. For many people we talked to, it was not their first time staying there.
I read comments about it not being a "true 5*", however you have to remember it's Cuba and what their situation is there. Yes, you could pick on a few evidences of wear and tear, but on the whole it was very clean and comfortable, and worth every penny.
The food in the restaurants was very good and the service excellent. The buffet was somewhat limited in the already prepared food, however if you went to the cooking stations where they prepared it for you, the food was great, you just had a bit of a wait. We had no problem gaining 5 pounds during the week, and the wine they serve with meals is the best we have had at any resort. Again the staff were terrific and the service was excellent.
We also took clothing with us that we would of sent to goodwill, or value village, and gave it to the housekeeper. We also bought some toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo etc. as well as crayons and etc from the dollar store and made up a few little zip lock bags to give to the housekeeping and our favorite staff as well. It's wonderful to see how happy they are, receiving everyday things we take for granted.
We had a really great vacation and hope to take our children and two young grandchildren with us next year.

 Great Place

Really enjoyed our stay at the Melia Cayo Guillermo. Rooms were great and clean. Staff was friendly and food was quite good. Only thing that needs work is the public bathrooms most of them didn't have locks on them and didn't work all the time. Other than that we don't have any real complaints.

 Not worth the money

We have been to other much better resorts for a good price in the Caribbean. May be this is 5 stars for Cuba standards but definitely not for us. Reception was very unfriendly and never helpful. Getting water bottles to the room was a pain. We need to water bottles as we had kids and they kept on telling us that we can't take any. The only good thing was the beach.

Des efforts ont été faits au cours des dernières années pour améliorer les aménagements extérieurs. Il reste toutefois du travail à faire à l'intérieur pour se mériter une cote 4 étoiles plus.

More like a 3 star and less at times

Food handling and preparation is poor and could lead to illness. Undercooked meats were frequent and recycled foods appeared too often and for too many days. The steam table was often used to heat undercooked sausage which remained pink inside and cold. The pastry chef dropped the only available knife, picked it up,wiped it with a serviette and used it to cut pie. The food in general was unappealing. Staff were probably not to blame. They needed more training and supervision in the kitchens and in the dining room. Our room was kept clean and we always had lots of hot water with good pressure. Coffee at every location was consistently good which is often not the case in Cuban resorts. Staff were kind and helpful. The mosquitos were a serious problem and we would not return to any resort on Guillermo for this reason.

We had a great time and would recommend this hotel to anyone to visit.
The staff couldn't have been any friendlier. The hotel was beautiful and clean.
Ask a lot of questions about what there is to do at the hotel because when it is your last day there you start finding out all these other things you could have done, then it is to late.

 Excellent resort! Very happy!

Our third time to Cuba and this was the best resort so far. Beautiful beach. Room was great - spacious and in good shape. We even had a new flat screen TV in our room. Would have liked a screen on the patio doors as there were mosquitoes at night, so we couldn't keep the door open, which we like to do rather than the air conditioning, which by the way worked very well. Had hot water almost all the time. Loved the bidet!

The food was fantastic by Cuban standards - much better than the other two resorts we stayed at in previous years. We went to Cozumel last year and the food here was even better here than in Cozumel. Fresh fish station, pasta station, grilled meat station.
The bread was amazing - I've always found the bread in Cuba to be very bland, but the bread here was outstanding. One night we even had hot bread right out of the oven that was to-die-for! Corn bread, coconut bread, even whole grain bread which I've never seen before in Cuba.
The drinks were typical of an all-inclusive - watered down. But that's to be expected. The cappuccino at the lobby bar was fantastic and the bartenders there very friendly. Be sure to bring your own travel mug as the flimsy plastic glasses detract from the experience, if you ask me.
We even took the bus to the Melia Cayo Coco to check it out, but we liked this resort better. There was just a better vibe. The Melia Cayo Coco was nice, but we found it very quiet (it's adult only) and the beach, though also very nice, was not as nice as Melia Cayo Guillermo. For one thing we really liked that the beach at this resort has the long pier - nice touch and nice to walk way out and look back at the beach or fish from the pier. The other thing was that there were tons of jelly fish washed up in sections on the Cayo Coco beach which made walking on the beach unpleasant, and our beach had just the odd jelly fish.

Like most resorts in Cuba internet access sucks so expect to get a nice break from your email!!

We did the "Pilar Plus" excursion which we really enjoyed (and my husband's not an excursion kind of guy). This was a speedboat ride where you drive your own speedboat and then we were taken to Pilar Beach which is a spectacular white sand beach 10 minutes from the resort.

One word of caution - there were "noseeums" or sand fleas and I got tons of bites on my legs. The first 3 days there was a good breeze so they were kept at bay, but on the 4th day when we woke up there was no wind and the water was beautiful and calm, so we went for an early walk on the beach and all of a sudden I felt things biting me but couldn't see anything. By the time I realized it was noseeums and put bug spray on, it was too late. I have over 100 bites primarily on my legs. I also saw several other people with large red welts and bites. So be warned - TAKE BUG SPRAY.

This beach was very popular with kite boarders, much to my husband's delight as he is learning to kite board. Kiteboarders at both ends of the beach - at one point I counted 23!

All in all, we really enjoyed the trip and would highly recommend this resort.

 Mixed experience

This was my second time to Cuba and my partners 5th (Varadero). This resort was recommended to us by a friend and the pier for fishing was a big draw.

Let me start with the negative..we arrived Saturday night and had no water when we awoke on Sunday until late evening. Tuesday there was no hot water again until late in the day. This was the theme for the another couple of days. Even when we left on Saturday, we showered with a cold trickle in the gym. Not at all pleased.

Now some of the positives. The food selection was o.k.(not as good as Sirenis in Varadero). We don't care for fried foods or items that have been out in the heat but chefs are willing to accommodate, when asked (grilled as opposed to fried). Many salad goods, fruit and freshly baked bread. The best meals were the lunches at the beach restaurant. We also paid extra for better wine at dinner and well worth it. Another treat was a private lobster dinner and was well worth the extra expense.

Resort is rundown but some items/rooms have been upgraded. We originally were booked into a room that was not a king but two small beds almost pushed together but we were upgraded to a true king on Tuesday.

The beach is great but breezy, hence a popular spot for kite surfers. Also, not much of a beach with high tide. Also, days too cool for going in the water from Wednesday on so take a jacket.

Fishing off the pier a real treat and a highlight. The only excursion we took was to Moron which I would not repeat but we enjoyed the stop for lunch at Lake Redonda which included a lunch with live music and a boat tour through the mangroves.

The staff I found much nicer than in Sirenis and do appreciate tips and goods. Don't forget the staff working behind the scenes. Enjoy your trip, wherever you go.
