 On s'attendaient à mieux

 Good for the value

Spent a week there with my wife and two kids (8 and 4). Beautiful beaches, amazing staff very friendly. Rooms are very spaciouse, cleaned everyday and fridge stocked daily. Breakfast at the buffet was very good and lots of choices. Dinner was almost the same every day excpet the lobseter dinner. A la cart, Italian was the best, Japaneese was not that much.

Would recommend this place for families but be aware of the amount of walking BUT it is worth it.

 Great Cuban destination

This is Cuba! And Cuban resorts have to be compared with Cuban resorts, not the other Carribean destinations.
NOTE: Every cash purchase must be made with Converted Cuban Pesos (CUC). But tips are accepted in any currency or in gift form. But, contrary to the paper George Washington, Cuba DOES NOT like our loonies or toonies, nor do they accept and convert them anywhere on the island. So staff receiving Canadian coins are stuck looking at worthless shiny objects, unless they befriend a vacationing Canadian banker (not likely, they are probably vacationing in the Cayman Islands). If you bring cash, and you must to leave (25CUC), DO NOT bring US$. You really loose on the conversion (-10% tax).
Resort: Very clean and well maintained, beautifully groomed landscaping, all the villas are hidden from the main pathways by lush flowering vegetation. The rooms are arranged in octagonal buildings with a central courtyard and private external balconies.
Beach: (2)Long resort exclusive beaches. On calm sunny days, just like a giant endless turquoise pool. Great for kids of all ages. Starfish, live conches, fish and snorkelling areas. Windy days produce family safe waves but accumulation of sea grass along beach edge. Manual clean-up is paced to Cuban time. I was annoyed by "early-birds" reserving with 1 towel multiple chairs and huts both at the beach AND pool-side and then showing up hours later.
Pool:(2)Very large pools well maintained and surrounded by lush vegetation, many amenities and helpful attendants. Cons: Very low depth (waist high) considering “adult” section. You really need deep water near the bar to dilute all the yellow water seeping off the underwater bar stools. ;)
Food: Smoked salmon, camarones (shrimp), gazpacho, Spanish wine, bottled Crystal, variety of fish on grill, À la carte restaurants. Cons: None other than to say that making sushi is a culinary art, and if you do not have any artists on staff, than you should not put sushi on your “Asian” menu. But the stir fry was great.
Entertainment: The scarcity of it allowed me to read the entire Steve Jobs biography. But that’s how we like it, quiet. Cons: First time viewing the nightly shows indoors in an auditorium. Allows for undisturbed rest in neighbouring villas but lacks the outdoor fiesta feeling.
Shopping: Really? Who goes to Cuba to shop except to buy cigars, rum or coffee? It is common now for the tiendas not to display the “official” prices of their tobacco products and sometimes the rum, coffee and other products. And yes it is NOT to your advantage. All the airports, even the small ones, have a cigar store or tienda. And because (my guess) of the proximity to real government authorities, the “official” prices are usually on display for all the products. But you are taking a last chance on availability.
One of my personal best destinations in Cuba.

 WORTH THE MONEY!

Room: Bungalow 41-42 are both less than a minute walk away from Megano Beach, approx. 15min walk to Ensenachos Beach. It's not as long a walk as other reviewers say. We've been to much bigger resorts such as the Grand Palladium and this is nothing compared to that. As long as you stay out of the villas, walking to anywhere is a breeze. Rooms are nice and clean. Don't expect the W Hotel and you'll love it. We had a few visits from geckos/creepy crawlies, can't avoid it since the maid keeps door open during cleaning. You don't always get refills of everything (eg. shampoo/towels) but when the maid is around, just ask.

Food: much better than expected from Cuba. We were afraid of long lines for the buffet stations from the reviews we read before we left but it just wasn't the case. Yes, there is a line. No, it doesn't take long. And good news, they got a second toaster! lol We enjoyed the Asian restaurant the most. Stay away from the International Restaurant unless you want to BE dinner. It's open air, next to the pool: mosquito central. Definitely bring ample supply of bug spray, we came back with many bites even though we were prepared. Just douse yourself with it before you head to dinner. One last thing, try the cappuccino at the lobby lounge! it is as good as they say.

Beach: this is where we spent most of our time. one of the most beautiful beaches we've ever seen. water is calm on most days, and even when it was windy, it's always fun to jump in the waves. Bring your own snorkel and take a banana or some bread with you from breakfast, the fishes know what's up, they'll follow you around even when there is no food. We preferred Ensenachos Beach, we found the water less turbulent and the sand was a bit nicer to walk on.

At Ensenachos, it's hard to find a spot under a palapa in the morning, TIP: go at or right after lunch. Half the beach clears out after the morning, we had plenty of seats to ourselves if we simply showed up at noon or 1pm. At Megano, we found seats quite easily almost any time of day. If you can't find a spot, just politely ask people to scoot over and share the palapas, everyone's in a great mood.

Entertainment: one of the best team we've ever seen!! Try to catch the shows at night, some of them really are worth seeing. Our favs were the cirque du soleil night and the Latin night (?, it was a women's dance group, Spanish tap dancing, AMAZING!), the entertainers were professionals and not just hotel staff so the show was very professional and fun to watch.

We also met some great entertainment staff on the beach, they held volleyball games, water aerobics, contests, etc. We love Gisela and Pedro! They were such great people! Always happy to see you! DON'T FORGET TO TIP THE ENTERTAINMENT STAFF ON THE BEACH, they make much less than the bartender in wage and in tips. Providing entertainment and hosting games is also a service, so tip them as you would a bartender or maid.

Front Desk: Not a nightmare at all. The front desk explained to ALL OF US AT THE SAME TIME how the check-in process worked which is sooo much more efficient than doing it individually. We arrived early morning and our room wasn't quite ready so they sent us to the buffet next door for breakfast, room was ready when we were done. We also had time to book our a la carte reservations right after breakfast, no line, booked all our restaurants in no time. we weren't picky about dinner times since we intended to stay at the beach until early evening. we had a few dinners past 8pm.

Excursions: We went on the 2 cities tour, Sancti Spiritus and Trinidad. It cost around $75. 3 hour ride each way, got a glimpse of the city, not really worth it. If you've never been to Cuba, it's nice to leave the resort for a day and take a look. however, i didn't feel like we got to see much. We got to buy cigars and small souvenirs, but nothing you can't buy from the hotel or Peublo (the small shopping center about 10min away from the hotel by taxi $5 or bus $1. We managed to share a taxi both ways so it cost us the same as if we had taken the bus.) Prices at the hotel/shopping center vs. the cities were more or less the same, so don't feel that you're getting ripped off if you buy from hotel.

i forgot to mention, go exchange your money at the airport. it's fast, no line, sufficient funds, and you get a better rate than at the hotel.

All in all, great beach, great staff, great hotel! Will come back!

 Iberostar esenachos

We arrived at the Iberostar Esenachos on Monday, April 16 (evening) family of 4 (2 adults, 2 young children). The hotel is about 1h40m away from the Cayo Coco airport. Check in was fast and efficient. We stayed in room 3229 close to the chidlren's water park. I had requested something special be prepared in the room for my Husband's 40th and son's 3rd birthday and nothing was prepared. So, needless to say, I was a little disappointed. However, it wasn't a big deal since the trip itself was a surprise.

As for the hotel (always compared to other Cuban hotels (namely, Iberostar Varadero and Brisas Varadero):

Grounds: beautiful, well kept greenery.
Cleanliness: room was cleaned daily to our satisfaction
Food: very dissappointed with the buffet the 1st 2 nights. Food was cold and seldom replenished. They must have rreceived some complaints and it got better over the week. The snack bar and 'El Pirate' restaurant at lunch was terrible. Very impracticle not to have a snackbar on the beach. Varadero snackbar was excellent and food was always fresh and plentiful.
Restaurants: Italian - very good, International - Bad, Japanese - very good, Seafood - good.

Beaches: Perfection!

 Up and coming Iberostar

The buffet was lacking. Often emppty containers. Lack of organization. Big line up for eggs. There should have been 2 egg station as not very many people eat plain crepes with nothing in them so they should have utilized the crepe station better. Also to get to prepared eggs you had to barge through the line. The al la carte's were good but hard to get in to.

The people were nice, as usual in Cuba. The service of the staff was not up to the excellent level of the Iberostar Veradero, but good. The beaches were fabulous and lots of chairs. There was a beach party apparently on the night we arrived but we didn't know about it. If it was Iberostar that put it on, it should have been advertised. Perhaps more than one beach party a week. The night life is pretty lame and as it is so isolated perhaps a disco should be added seperate from the pool tables. The grounds were beautiful. The adult pool was very nice with lots of floaters and comfortable chairs. The buildings are a little tired but it looks like Iberostar will fix them up. Love the beach towel service and the no towel card.

 Heavenly Beach

This was our first trip to Cuba. We spent a long day of travel to arrive to Ensenachos. It takes about 1.5 hours by bus from the airport. When we arrived our room was ready and cool.We spent most days on the beach ( Ensenachos was our favorite)after having a great breakfast in the main building. Bring comfortable shoes because you will walk alot. Also there are no clocks in your room so I would suggest bring a watch. The staff was great, not one complaint. All speak fluent English and many speak French. We did find the best food was in the main buffet rather than the al la carte areas although the atmosphere could not be beat at them.On the beaches waiters came around for drink orders. Please tip all the staff as they all work hard to give you a pleasant experience. We generally gave one or two pesos. A small amount by Canadian standards. We would go back again but maybe a 10 day instead to make up for the full day travel for us on either end of the trip.

 Beautiful water, bad resort

First I would like to start by saying that my spouse and I go on several “beach” vacations a year and have stayed with several other large chain hotels in several different locations. We truly enjoy these getaways, and we always stay in 5 star resorts as we like to get spoiled. This year we could not afford to go on a couple of trips, only 1, and this year we chose to stay with you. My parents have stayed at Iberostar in both Jamaica and in Mexico and told us that we would “not find a better resort”! They said that they had great experiences at both hotels, and would go back in a heartbeat.

I feel that it would be an understatement to say that our experience was frustrating, and definitely not a 5 star experience. Now we are left with having had an awful vacation, after spending our holiday budget on you and your great reputation.

When we first flew into Cuba we were excited as the weather was beautiful, and we had flown over some of the most beautiful water we had ever seen. The bus ride from Santa Clara to the resort was nice, and the views of the cities were great! Once we arrived at the hotel with about 40 other guests, we were surprised to see two hotel staff standing at the front of the line, dealing with all the guests with a paper and pen, despite the fact that there were two computers there. We were with another couple and had a hard time talking the staff into allowing us to stay near each other. The staff were rude and kept acting like all of our requests (which were simply that we be in the same building) were ridiculous. Once we arrived to our building we were surprised to see that many of the rooms were vacant, which caused us to wonder what the big hassle was? The greeting, front desk experience was not acceptable, all of us standing in a large cluster, with the staff not even trying to get through everyone. They seemed more interested in chatting with each other about the guests ( I speak a small amount of Spanish) than getting us all settled. Online we had requested an ocean view room. Upon arriving and checking in the staff confirmed with us that there was a view of the ocean from our room in building 41 which was their ocean view building.

We then arrived at our suite after a 15 minute walk having to carry our luggage as there was no shuttle to take us there. There were sometimes shuttles along the way but they would rarely stop to pick up any guests, always acting like it was a hassle to stop to get us. We found it hard to find our room, as there was minimal signage at the resort and we found it to be very confusing. When we got into our room there was a solid wall of trees, around the entire building, and about a 5 minute walk to the closest view of the water. Upon arriving in our room we were very disappointed as it was dirty. The floors had sand on them, and the shower had soap scum from the last guest. The walls were covered in dirt and scuffs and the furniture had coffee and water marks, fingerprints etc all over them.

After settling in we went to find an open restaurant and found that not one restaurant or snack bar was open in the entire hotel, and that we needed to wait another two hours before we could go and eat anywhere? As we looked at the pamphlet we were provided we realized there were several times throughout the day where there was no overlap on the resort for restaurants being closed and open for transitions. As a result, there would be nowhere to eat between breakfast and lunch, lunch and supper, and later in the evening. We were told very rudely by a staff member that we could go and eat room service in our rooms. After a 12 hour flight we were starving, and the last thing we wanted to do was sit in our room. In our room we found that there were no room service menus, spa pricing lists, or any information about excursions or day trips. We called to order room service and were met with a disappointing response that the menu was in our room, and no explanation of what they had. We asked if they had a couple of simple items, which they did, and ordered. Approximately 1.5 hours later our food arrived, cold, disgusting, with no cutlery, napkins, or condiments. I asked the staff member delivering it for these things, and he laughed at me and just said that he didn’t have any and quickly left. Over the week we tipped more than $400.00 to staff members hoping this would get us better service but it sadly made no difference at all. Overall it was a very poor effort and attitude by staff.

Later that night we went to the buffet for dinner which was disgusting. The food was undercooked and appeared as though some of the dishes had been left out for several meals. There was no effort made to present guests with a good meal, and I found that the buffet was generally the same every single day. The next morning we used the pamphlet we were provided and attempted to eat breakfast at the only other buffets located beside the Megano Beach catwalk. After a lengthy walk we arrived to discover this restaurant was closed (there was nothing mentioned about this upon check in) and appeared to have been closed for a long time as there was dirt covering the floor and no tables, chairs or buffet equipment set up. This buffet indicated breakfast was served until 11:00 a.m. here and by this time it was around 10:30 a.m. Still needing to eat breakfast we ran back to the usual main lobby buffet and found the doors closed. Being frustrated and hungry we opened the doors to find numerous other guests just sitting down to eat and staff just starting to clear tables. One waitress rudely stated they were closed but given the fact it was only approximately 10:32 a.m. (map said buffet closed at 10:30 a.m.), and that all the steam trays still had food in them and there were still numerous guests eating, we proceeded to eat anyways as we had no other options. We continually ate at the buffet (main lobby) but there was still consistent problems throughout the week with certain foods. Scrambled eggs were runny and undercooked (barely darkened underneath where fried), bacon was pink, raw (sometimes cold) and all fat like it was not fried or cooked at all, chicken was often pink and miscoloured. It seemed that it was up to the guest to check what they were eating first as the cooks, servers and supervisors (who were often present standing and milling about) did not care. Us and the other couple that we traveled with often had stomach aches or digestion problems after meals but it was a wonder there wasn’t more serious illness given these serious food preparation concerns.

After breakfast we went to book our a-la-carte meals but waited while a staff member chatted with another staff member behind her desk for approximately 10 minutes prior to acknowledging us standing there waiting to talk to her. She then kept telling us that there was no room for us at any of the restaurants, and we had to basically argue with her to book us in at very late times in the evening, mostly after 8:00 p.m. When we went to the restaurants they were mostly empty, which makes me wonder why when the restaurant is only 30% full why I am arguing to get a reservation. The restaurants that we chose to go to were the seafood restaurant, the steak house, and the Asian restaurant. The seafood restaurant was disgusting and even non seafood items tasted like seafood although they were cooked on the same grill. The menus all had very limited selections and there were several items on the menu that they did not have. The service was poor, and the dishes were dirty. We were hopeful that our next meal at the steakhouse would be better and were disappointed when they told us they were out of all of the steaks, all of the pork, and the only options were chicken and salmon? My spouses chicken was so raw that there was blood pooling under it on the plate but yet the server felt comfortable sending that to our table? We barely ate anything there as it was so unappetizing, and then went to the buffet after our meal. We were very happy with the Asian restaurant, our first good meal of the trip, which was on our very last night. Unfortunately all four of us got sick after it and spent the night in our rooms.

Much later that night we spent our night in the room and I went to the front counter looking for playing cards, board games, or movies (all of the rooms have DVD players). The staff seemed annoyed and confused to be asked, then said that they didn’t have any and that there were none for sale on the resort. They then produced approximately 6 movies, all in Spanish saying this was the selection for the resort. Over half of these cases were empty and staff’s response was “oh no movie” then removing the pile from me and walking away.

The service in the main lobby for drinks was awful! However, one of our evenings we were served by a male named Alexandro….as far as I am concerned he should be running the hotel. He was very kind, and attentive, and made sure that we were taken care of. The other nights that he was obviously not working we could sit for over 2 hours without being served despite the fact that there seemed to be staff wandering around everywhere? We went to the bar for all of our drinks, and brought them back to the table which took about 20 minutes to do as the service at the bar was very slow. One night there were 4 bartenders standing behind the bar, and only 3 guests waiting for drinks, and it still took forever? I don’t understand this? Our last two nights we ended up buying our own alcohol from the gift shop (when it wasn`t randomly closed for various reasons), and bringing glasses from our room down to the main lobby so that our evening wouldn’t be ruined by the lack of service.

During our stay we noticed one day that there was a bird trapped inside the buffet restaurant (which is indoor) and the bird was frantically trying to get out and was pooping all over 2 of the tables next to the windows. I pointed out to staff that there was bird poop on the chairs and cutlery and they fully understood, looking at the poop and laughing. Then the same staff member proceeded to sit a guest at that table, and she seemed very angry when I showed the guest that there was poop on her table and chair. This guest then asked to sit somewhere else and we saw the staff member go and wipe the poop up with a dry cloth napkin, re-adjust the cutlery, and put the napkin on the side bar where they were using them to polish cutlery! Not cleanly at all, and very disturbing to see at a restaurant you are eating in.

The beaches were beautiful! The sand and the water were perfect. Behind where the loungers are was covered in trash, broken lounge chairs, and empty cups. It was gross. Can the resort seriously not pick up broken furniture and trash on their beach? There were garbage cans on the beach that were not emptied regularly. I always tried to sit away from them as they smelled of rotting garbage. Again, limited drink service on the beach. We were maybe asked 3 times over the course of 8 hours on the beach if we wanted a drink. We also found it hard to find seating on the beach as lots of the furniture and loungers were broken, and they did not make attempts to repair them. 1 out 5 huts was broken, and unusable, left collapsed on the beach.

I want you to know that under normal circumstances we would have talked to management staff at the resort while we were there. We don’t believe in complaining after the fact. However all of the front desk or administration staff (including apparent supervisors) were so rude, uninformed, non-English speaking (very few and limited words if any) and generally hard to deal with that we felt it would only ruin our trip further. My reasons for writing this letter are so that first you can make improvements to your resort so that this doesn’t happen to future guests. These occurrences we mentioned in this letter were not unique to us as we could easily look around and see it happening constantly to other guests.

This vacation was exceptional, and really was a dream come true for the most part. Can't say enough good things about this resort, with the exception of the food, and that the resort seems to be a little understaffed. Would definitely return in the future!!

 Cool

 Wonderful!!!

The hotel itself is not the highlight. The entertainment staff, servers(not clerical staff), and the beaches are what makes your vacation. Very relaxing and fun!

 Nice resort

I mean this in the nicest way. The resort is not a 5 star and neither was the Hideaway

I love the beach and the concept of the small bungalows but, first off the restaurant staff are in dire need of training. They waste steps and time and in confusion ignore new arrivals

The beach has many palapas that are broken. They look easily fixable. As well since the resort is busy there could be more built

The main buffet, while better than Hideaway is so slow and items like toast bread disappear for over 30 minutes

I am seeing mgmt at the resort but don't know if there is a holistic approach to their actions. I have never been to an iberostar before and while your book shows many pretty pictures there is not the value of a 5 star I will go to another resort

I had a good week but will spend the extra money to Holguin and the Paradisus

 Très beau voyage!

Très beau site. Superbes plages.
