 Bahia principe el portillo

Disappointed with paying extra for the golden club as it was not worth it. The description of the golden club benefits were misleading. There was no advantage to the golden club!

 Best All-Inclusive we've ever stayed at

Cayo Levantado really is a dream hotel. It is a step beyond the other Bahia Principe properties, but you do pay a premium for this. The beaches are so-so from a snorkelling perspective, but they are pretty quite. This is a relaxation resort NOT a party one.

 Cayo Levantado

The resort was overrated, hotel, restaurants and services. A three-four star resort, definitely NOT FIVE star resort.
The natural settings are just BEAUTIFUL.
However the hotel and the services were way below expectations:
1. Room was clean and the cleaning ladies did a very good job, however:
• It rained in the room;
• Jacuzzi tub didn’t function;
• No ventilation in the bathroom;
• Toilet didn’t work properly;
• The shower was badly designed and flooded the bathroom floor;
• We had bad air coming through ventilation system foe couple of days;
• Balcony lights didn’t work;
• The Safety box had problems however it was fixed;
• We asked for a wake-up call in the morning we left however the operator forgot to call us;

2. Buffet restaurants were disappointing:
• The buffet restaurant on the beach is bad, bad, bad; Bad service, bad food.
• The buffet restaurant in the hotel was better, plenty of food; however not very tasty; the meat was hard and chewy; the service not very good.
• Only one small bar on the beach;
• Three a-la-cart restaurants which were OK, just OK, nothing exciting.

3. The animation team tried very hard to please us all and the shows were OK. The performers worked very hard however the resources (equipment) were inadequate: an improvised theatre with bad sound system.

 PERFECT GETAWAY

This place really exceeded my expectations. This is truly the best I have ever seen in the Dominican Republic and matches any vacation experience I have elsewhere when it even costed more.

A quaint and charming hotel. Exceptional service, clean and wonderful food. Not much night life, but perfect for some R&R.

Service excellent.

 Fantastic Resort

Travelled Sept 10-17 to the most beautiful resort in DR. The staff were amazing, the room was beautiful. The food was the best we have ever had at a Caribbean resort. Service in all restaurants & by all staff was excellent. I would definately revisit this resort and highly reccommend it. The only people who would not enjoy this resort is night time partiers. It is not really for the young folk who enjoy nightlife. We were in bed by 11 every night so we could be up by 6am and enjoy every day to its fullest....

 Beautiful Location

The hotel was beautiful and the location was a dream. Nothing to do but sit back, relax and enjoy. Not the place to be if you get antsy sitting still for too long. Service was inconsistent. Food was good. The buffet had a lot of selections. The a la carte restaurants were a nice option but the food itself was not great. The room (ours was a deluxe junior suite) was giant, clean and exceeded our expectations. The only negative was that it was a little too dark. In honesty I think the room was a little too large for us. I wish we would have saved the money and went for the level just below to only a junior suite.

 Exquisite Quiet Retreat

The grounds of the resort are exquisite and truly tropical. The service is top-notch as my wife and I saw workers and the animation team not to mention managers go out of their way to please. If you are not happy with anything just ask. The food can be hit and miss at times but they are willing to listen and always accommodate. The nightly entertainment deserves some attention especially as they rate themselves five star. Overall an enjoyable experience and quiet just as I wanted it.

 Wow

 You must go to this resort

This hotel is the second best we have ever stayed at (after The Royal in the Mayan) and we have been to the Dominican many times. The flight from Toronto not only left 15 min early, we arrived 1/2 hour early in Samana. We travelled to the hotel in a mini-van rather than a bus. It was a 1 1/2 hr drive filled with panic the entire way. There are no lines painted on the roads and apparently the rules of the road are that there aren't any. Being on the left side of the road to pass with a vehicle headed towards you flashing it's high beams can be quite disconcerting, especially when it happens many times. White knuckle to entire way and not a great start.
Check-in on the mainland was fine and our room was ready when we got off the ferry. We were in villa #1. There have been previous comments about the location not being the best - it's right beside the entertainment stage. It's also right beside the main building and the buffet. Very convenient to have a 1 minute walk to breakfast. Besides, the nightly show ends by 10PM so noise is not an issue. I would recommend to anyone that they try for villa's 1,2 or 3 on the second floor. All are close to the main building and the beach.
We had no issues booking the a la cartes. We did Don Pablo twice, which is the best and Portofino twice (Italian and right by the beach). The "Mediterraneo" was quite frankly awful and should be avoided. Lunch at the beach buffet was rather repetitive but still good. With the one exception all food was excellent.
The beach is fabulous and with the two sides to choose from (the rough ocean side and the more protected cove side) there is something for everyone.
We had a few issues in communicating with staff as we don't speak much Spanish (dos cervesa's por favor doesn't count)but it is their country after all.
Our one excursion was the catamaran that was advertised for snorkelling on coral reefs. The "coral reef" was actually a small island just off of Cayo Levantado. Saw some nice starfish and a huge school of minnows - not much else. Lunch was on the huge public beach that is part of the Cayo Levantado island (at the end of the island in the pictures) with the typical high pressure vendors. The "band" during lunch passed the tip box after just 3 songs. We couldn't be bothered sitting on that beach for 3 hours having to buy beer ($5 USD) so we told the guide and went back to the resort. We talked to other folks who did the same thing on another trip to the National Park. Seems kind of crazy to take a boat back to the mainland, get in a van or bus and then take the ferry back to where you were 2 hours ago.
We cannot wait to go back. As mentioned in other reviews it is a perfect place to de-stress as it is quiet. We would strongly recommend this resort to everyone.

 Amazing!

Best Vacation Resort we have ever gone to. This resort is a bit more expensive than what we usually pay, but well worth it. The staff are all extremely friendly, always smiling. The animation team is great. The night shows are good, the animation team tries real hard to give you a great show. I think the hotel could spring a bit more on helping them out to make the shows better, but we enjoyed them just the same. Food was good, I am a very picky eater and I enjoyed the food at this resort! Nothing bad to say about this place. I was surpised to see the freebees included on this trip, snorkeling, shopping trips, boat tours of the island etc......Absolutely Fantastic!!! Going back again next year for sure. This time in February for the whale watching! Can't wait! Didn't want to come home!

 Unbelievable island resort

The island this resort is located on is paradise! The beaches were pristine and the ocean swimming was great. We talked to a woman who put on a lifejacket and snorkelled around the whole island. The pools were also great. The staff were incredibly friendly and the service was excellent. Our room was gorgeous, spaceous, and clean. The only part that wasn't absolutely perfect was the food; I could always find many delicious things to eat but at times, the selections were a bit unusual and too fancy for my taste. We plan to return to this resort ASAP. We loved it!

 Overall a good experience

Room in villa beautiful, very private balcony with gorgeous views. Resort itself is 5 star. Service and entertainment not quite 5 star yet. Staff very friendly but more staff would help service times. A la Carte ok, service slow. This resort is for those who want to just relax. It is not for the partying type. The resort is not great for those with mobility issues as it has steep hills, thou there are little carts that you can hail to take you around. The carts however are in need of refurbishing. Food was good and same in comparison as other resorts in DR. Beaches small but gorgeous. Pools lovely.
